Tomorrow is National Silence Day.
It is in support of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders.

I am not gay, but I have many friends who are, and I am doing this to support them.
My school is allowing it. You had to sign up and most of the teachers are totally okay with it.

Is anyone else doing it at your school?

My school is possibly doing it?
I haven't actually HEARD anything about it, but I have read on Facebook.
I think my school is trying to recreate the gay/straight alliance group or whatever it was called.

I'm a lesbian, but I'm not doing it. Honestly, I can't not talk for more than five minutes. I do know some people who are doing it.

I don't even know if it's existance is recognized over here. Sadly i'm not going to even attempt it. I have a meeting with my numbskull of a maths teacher which requires me to talk and i'm not sure my other teachers would appreciate it. I'll try and be quieter though. =]
My brother's not doing it his boyfried will be.
=]

Wish I could but it would be REALLY hard for me to NOT talk.

I'm doing it!

All you had to do was buy a pin for $1 (the GSA set this up).

Teachers are informed that any student wearing a pin is participating, and will not be forced to talk (if they wish not to).

Most teachers are okay with it, as far as I know (this is my first year of HS).

I have a few gay friends, and I'm bi myself. A few of my other friends are also doing this. (2 of my gay friends are away in Baltimore for this concert thing). For more info:

How will you break the silence?

Think about all the voices you won't be hearing tomorrow.

Question: Why should be be silent for an entire day for gays/lesbians??
Im sorry, but they are people, love is love, its almost like disrespect to be completely silent for a day, to me thats like saying "If you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say it at all" which in fact, the only thing I have to say is nice things, I cant think of 1 thing that I could say that would offend them.

I just dont get it. I support it, but I dont support silence.

I'm gay but i'll still talk, I have arena scheduling tomorrow so I kind of have to talk to make my schedule xD

I believe it's because a kid was shot because he was gay.
It's a moment of silence, remembering what happens when tolerance is not happening.

im participating. my two aunts are lesbians and i dont have a problem with it but most of my school does. i really have no idea why. i also like to think os all of hte people that will be doing this to remember what happened to that poor boy.

i know that not everyone understands it (Mouse) but i will not be talking at all. at least, i wont talk until i go to my friends house tomorrow night, we have to sork on a project and it might be hard not to talk. i will do my best though. love is love, LBGT-whatever.

sorry, i rambled a bit!! like i said, i will be doing it.

We talked about it in my English class.
Kids were saying that it's happening to show that gay, bisexual, and lesbian kids have equal rights as straight kids.
My teacher commented that she would kick them out of the class, just like any other person on any normal day.

I'll probably do it though for like a class or two. And Only talk when it is deemed neccesary.

Oh I remember that story,
The guy found out he had a crush on him, so he shot him. I cried, that is just too terrible, if one of my girl friends had a crush on me, I would be flattered, but Im not lesbian, people ask me to become lesbian, and its like "well, its not like I come up to you and say 'BE STRAIGHT'I just cant do it, Im not attracted to girls like I am guys.".

Just terrible:sad2:

No one in my school is gay, or has come out yet.
I wish I could support them, but like I said I dont know anyone.
I still support it. Those people who have ever been ridiculed, are in my thoughts.

Is that what happened?
Woah that's nuts. It's awful.

Chances are, most everyone knows at least one gay person.

They just aren't aware of it, because that person hasn't come out yet.

Most of the time, they (we) are scared of what people will think about them (us).

I thought they Day of Silence symbolized how something about discrimination? Sorry, not sure what.

Anyways, I'd be fired if I didn't talk tomorrow.

The teacher would kick them out of class?! For standing up for rights?!

WOW.

I mean, I can see that it disrupts the class and all, but what about standing up for what you believe in?

Honestly, I don't care if I do get in trouble tomorrow. Let's see...

History: Playing Jeopardy, but participation not required.
Math: Should be okay.
Science: Might get talked to, but should be able to get by.
Advisory: Joke period, really.
Spanish: Half the class is doing it, and she doesn't have a problem.
Gym: No talking required!
Keyboarding: Can manage this class with no talking.

I don't really care if I get in trouble.

Yep, that's right. This year's Day of Silence is being dedicated to Lawrence King, but it's about the discrimination that GLBTQs face.

From the dayofsilence.org website:

"The Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org), a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King."

I participated last year, and will be again this year. I even get to hand out ribbons tomorrow. :p

I think it's a great thing, and I didn't think I would able to do it either, but I did!
