For those of you renting cars at DIS-Con, you might be interested to know that National and Alamo Rental Cars have filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. National and Alamo claim that they will honor all reservations, but you might want to double-check just to be sure. From what I understand, layoffs are happening in the telephone reservations offices.

Thanks, again, DisneyCub. You should post this on the Transportation board, too.

I have always had good luck with Budget, and the discount offered through the DIS promotion is the best rate you can get at Budget. You don't get a choice of available upgrades like National, but I have been given free upgrades twice without asking.

I am also a Budget groupie. Used Alamo once and absolutley hated it - lousy service - long waits for shuttle. I can see why they are having trouble.
And the DIS rate doesn't hurt either.

:( Our reservation is with National. Hope it's going to be OK. I'm going to check on the reservation again just to be sure. It was OK earlier this week when I checked it.

Do you think I should look into a back-up reservation with another company just in case?

OK, I just went to the National site, then to their parent company, ANC. Here's some of what I found there.

About Our Restructuring

On November 13, 2001, ANC Rental Corporation and its U.S. operating subsidiaries voluntarily filed petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy code in Wilmington, Delaware. The recent downturn in travel caused by the tragic events of September 11 makes this action necessary. The Chapter 11 filing does not include its International or Canadian operations, or its independent National franchisees.

ANC's Alamo and National brands are open and conducting business as usual at locations around the world. For specific location information, or to make a reservation, please refer to each brand's Web site, www.alamo.com and www.nationalcar.com.

As always, our focus is on continuing to provide the same high level of service and satisfaction which our customers have come to value since National began in 1947 and Alamo began in 1976.

The management and board of directors view this filing as a proactive and positive step for ANC. The restructuring program currently being implemented is designed to make ANC more efficient and competitive in today's vastly changed economic and travel landscape.

We anticipate emerging a stronger company, better positioned to serve leisure and business customers for years to come.

Thanks Nancy. That's what I thought I had read too but couldn't find the article

We have our ressie through National's Emerald Aisle. I hope this doesn't change our plans.

I felt a lot better about my ressie after I read all the info on the National & ANC sites. I'm just going to stick with what I already have.

Me too, unless I can find something cheaper. But it is nice just getting in any car and taking off with Emerald Aisle. Plus the airline mileage points.....

I am using Emerald Isle too...isn't it the greatest. You just get your luggage, find a car you like, and then just drive off.
