Natalie Portman Is Engaged and Pregnant!

Do you think society would be better or worse off if more people adhered to some religious values? If you even have been taught any.

Not sure what you're saying. Are you doubting if I've been taught any or are you asking if society would be better or worse off if more people adhered to religious values or if they'd at least been taught any?

I don't think the mods want us talking about religion - just realized that's what this has become!

ETA: Since you used "you" to refer to me in the first sentence, I'm going to assume you meant "you" to be me in the second. And, I'm really wondering why you're doubting if I've been taught any religious principles. I've stated my religion on here before, but, like I said, the mods don't want us talking about it.

EATA: I realize it was I who first brought up religion and I apologize. I forgot that it was against the rules.

Oh and congrats to Natalie Portman (even though she'll never see this). I'm sure her child will be beautiful and she will do a great job raising it. :goodvibes

There are general trends of society that have led us to this point in time. I will not get into good or bad.. but I have to care about what my fellow man does because it will effect me or my descendents at some point when it becomes generally accepted by society to do things that are not considered to be favorable. Nothing is more annoying to me than this soundbite driven society where people act like their actions don't have consequences for the world around them.
I agree with what you wrote here. It is important to note though, as you alluded to, that that doesn't necessarily lead to any specific conclusion for any specific societal changes. Practically all major positive changes in society were vilified to start with, and practically all major positive changes in society cause secondary effects which are generally negative, yet the overall is still substantially positive. Indeed, for those who see this as a negative thing, it fits very comfortably under the category of a secondary effect of women gaining equality in society. However, who knows? Perhaps it is part of a change that results in women becoming dominant in Western society (a.k.a., justice), and/or changes that lead to millenia of peace and prosperity. There is nothing deterministic about it.

:) Thank you. So that would include people in their thirties, forties, fifties? You think they should never have sex if they're not married? I'm guessing that you feel that way for religious reasons? If so, does it matter if the people do not belong to your religion?
This is critical. Judging others by anything other than the beliefs and values that they subscribe to is nothing but indefensible, self-serving judgmentalism.

Let anyone who wants to condemn someone else for doing something that is legal and in compliance with their own beliefs first become vegetarians - in other words: first conform to my beliefs and values - before you cast the first stone at someone else. After all: If your beliefs and values are readily applied to others, then my beliefs and values are just as readily useful for judging you.

Do you think society would be better or worse off if more people adhered to some religious values?
Sure! Mine.

I'm so excited for Natalie Portman! She's one of the few celebrities that I think have any sense about them and I think she's talented.

Can't wait to read about her wedding (not that she'll probably let it the press know anything about it )!

Really reaching, eh?

The poster I quoted is acting as though a child conceived before a couple is married will need help making it in the world. A ridiculous claim. If it was a woman who was married, carrying a child and had done the same as I mentioned you'd hear 'that kid will be A okay' - gimmee a break. Natalie Portman and the unibomber? Clever.

Well you claimed that just because she went to Harvard the kid would be fine. You stated that silly argument. Going to Harvard doesn't mean squat. I am sure there are idiots that went to Harvard.

Well, to be fair, the assertion that her child wouldn't be fine, itself, was just as poorly-supported. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I've been thinking more and more about this. What you're really saying has nothing to do with having babies, right? I mean, it seems like what you're saying is you do not think anyone should be having sex before they're married. I'm guessing you wouldn't want someone who becomes pregnant to have an abortion. I thought most people who felt that way were ok with it if the couple decides to get married, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

I wonder, then, if you think all people regardless of their age should not have sex before marriage.

Just curious. I'm not trying to be snarky and no big deal if you don't want to answer.

Complicated questions. In a perfect world I think waiting is best, too many STD's to deal with. Years ago, you got one, you got a shot and boom you were fine, these days they can kill you. Anyway, no I didn't wait, but I was very careful, no I don't believe in abortion, but I won't even begin to discuss that. My problem is that Hollywood society actually seems to glamorize this practice. All of these teen look at her and Angolina and think wow, look they can do it so can I. Well you can't. They have endless supplies of help and usually money.

I also happen to believe that every child needs a dad if at all possible, yes sometimes things happen and it is sad but as a general rule kids need a male figure in their lives. Also this goes back to my absolute hatred of all things hollywood and celeb related. They tend to go with whatever floats their boat at the time, which means she probably was in need of some loving, she was dating him and whammo, she got preggers, so now they can do damage control and get married, I guarantee you, it won't last.

I never said it would be fine or not. The pp was just pointing out that just because you go to Harvard doesn't mean that you are ok. I never saw where he said that the child would not be ok, just that everyone that went to Harvard isn't ok.

With regard to your reply to Liberty Belle: Research seems to indicate that relative affluence is a better predictor of how well-adjusted children would be, rather than the presence of a male role-model. So that, combined with your logic, would dictate that poor people shouldn't have children. This kind of indefensible conclusion from available research is a reflection of how there is really no way of establishing reliable implications with regard to these things. Reasonable people disagree, making it essential that everyone respect the differing perspectives different people subscribe to. There simply isn't any way of proving that your preference, in this regard, is better than anyone else's, so therefore no legitimate basis for judging others based on your criteria.

With regard to the Harvard issue: You missed my point: Attacking the previous poster's assertion, due to how weak the support for it was, without also attacking the comments that the previous poster was replying to, doesn't make sense. That's all I was trying to say.

George Bush Jr??? lol, sorry :lmao:

Now we've got religion AND politics!! :rotfl:

Lots of women have babies and due to different circumstances, raise them on their own. What you're basically saying is poor people shouldn't have children.

Back to Ms. Portman and her fiancee, haven't they been dating for almost a year? Plenty of time to decide whether they want to be together or not. Nothing "whammo" about it.

Is that Judy Garland in your avatar? Didn't she get divorced like 5 times or something? Wonder what her religious values were?

I think her child will be beautiful, and a bit fun...kinda like it's mom. She's 29 people....and she has built her career on talent and hard work. Perhaps if she were entering the celebrity scene as the currrent "TEEN MOM'S" she would be hip and acceptable? I know a LOT of women who have gotten married, had kids and then thought, hmmmm, if it weren't for the kids and finances I would be outta here...Ms. Portman will not be in such a position therefor alolwing herself to be in control of her happiness which will affect her child's happiness...happy mom=happy baby= hopeful productive/positive future member of society. What a wonderful time in her life.

I'm not sure, which religion pushes barbiturates?

The whole waiting until marriage thing is so outdated. If that is your thing good for you but unless you are Amish (which if you think about is is pretty much outdated too) a lot has changed in the last 60 years. The black folks even get to use our restrooms and drinking fountains now.**

I think Natalie Portman looks good in all the press I've seen for Black Swan, not emaciated.

**That was meant sarcastically for the rhetorical device disabled.
