About the nastiest thing I encounter on a regular basis is being trapped in an elevator with someone who is just coming in from smoking. Nasty!

To the smokers out there, can you please air out a bit before you get on the elevator?

Lol, WUT?

"Airing out" doesn't help in any noticeable way on an elevator. Yes, it's unpleasant but you're request is beyond rude. Maybe take the stairs?

Not much you can typically do in an elevator, but I just wish they would be aware of their smell and not stand so close in lines. And it seems if I move up to get more space, they just close in again.

I actually had to change lanes in the grocery store recently because the smell was so bad.

Are you a "born again" non smoker? You appear to frequently rage against smokers on the Dis. I don't like the smell of smoke either but I also don't like the smell of people's perfumes, shampoos, etc. It's something we all must just deal with though.

There are many things that people in public places do that I wish they wouldn't but it's a free society and we need to learn to deal or live in the woods with the animals. I mean, is there anything more foul that breathing in car exhaust?

Lol. They are equally disgusting. I rate them about the same.

Yes, have you ever smelled the perfume Tabu? Oh gawd, it's worse than car exhaust. :faint:

The other day DH and I were getting into our car after shopping and we smelled cigarette smoke in the car. Looked around and there were two men just getting into their car, and one was smoking. The wind must have been just right to cause the smell to follow us into our car. Just something we have to live with, as do you with other people riding in the elevator with you. I agree with a PP who mentioned people's perfume, sometimes that smell can be sickly and overpowering too. Especially perfume that has that "old" smell to it, like it's long past its shelf life and should have been thrown out long ago.

I would say it is rude for the smoker to get in a close space with other people so soon after smoking. Maybe they should take the stairs?

And I would say it's nasty if someone who hasn't bathed in recent memory does the same thing. Or someone who showered in cheap perfume. Or someone who just chowed down on a meal full of onions and garlic. Maybe they need to have a professional sniffer stationed at every elevator entrance. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" There'd be gridlock on the stairs.

I don't enjoy the smell of smoke either, but I also remember people smoking in restaurants and in offices and going to lunch and smoking between the restaurant and their office and probably in the elevator. So if someone is limiting their smoking to all the designated areas there doesn't seem like a lot one can do to limit the lingering odor on their clothes. Maybe try finding a smell that doesn't bother you and hold something with that scent near your nose in the elevator. Or try putting some Vick's under your nostrils before getting in.

oh so many odors are bad -- too many to list

People literally stink. Just fact. In those cases I may look silly, but I'll just lean into my collar and smell my shirt. Thankful it's just a short elevator ride, and not hours on end in a plane.

Oh please, guy in my office craps his pants every few months. You don't have a clue about nasty.

Elevator rides take, what, 30 seconds? Not a big deal...hold your breath if you are.that bothered. Just like one would.if a person had B.O., horrid breath (a girl in my office...I am often not breathing around her...), or funky perfume.

Not a big deal.
