Is Nassau safe for a small adult female and 3 year old child to walk around by themselves? I thought about walking around right around the outside of the port area or maybe walking to Margaritaville beach resort. I’m worried about safety though because it’s just me and my child going. I’ve never cruised alone with a child. and we live in a small town in the Midwest so not used to big cities or touristy places. I only want to get off the ship for an hour or two to walk around just so my child can see Nassau but Idk if that’s a good plan or not since I head so many bad stories about Nassau.

Also, when buying things on the island do people generally use cash or credit cards?

I've only been once and felt relatively safe walking around, but I was with my husband. That first corridor alone after you get through customs is like running the gauntlet - everyone trying to sell you something from hair braiding to a tour. It's a lot. I don't know that I would've been comfortable going through that or walking around if my husband wasn't with me. I might opt for a tour instead (I believe there are beach options) so at least you are transported there and back safely.

As for buying stuff, we didn't buy a whole lot but were able to use a card in the shops that we visited.

I'd say it depends on how used to stuff that goes on in cities.

I live in NYC and am quite used to walking by people trying to shove things in your face - if they see you glance at them, that's their "in" to continue trying their sales pitch, but if you just keep walking and don't acknowledge them at all, you're good to go. It seems people who are not used to ignoring street peddlers, etc. have the most issues as they think it's "rude" to ignore them. It's not "rude" - it's minding your own business and not giving them a second thought.

We never get off at Nassau. So many vendors aggressively trying to get you to buy. Plenty to do on board ship.

Has the policy for disembarking with unvaccinated children changed to be able to do something like that?

We'll be in Nassau next week with a 4 year old, but I didn't realize that getting off the ship without a Port Adventure booked would be an option (I don't see the restriction on their website anymore, though an older email stated "Guests who are vaccinated and wish to disembark the ship with unvaccinated children, in any port of call other than Disney Castaway Cay, will need to purchase a Disney Cruise Line Port Adventure for their party").

Just wanted to make sure that the policy did in fact change and that you would actually be able to check out Nassau.

I would recommend against you doing so.

My wife and I walked all the way to the Queen's Staircase and back alone. I had forgotten the specifics of how to get there, but was generally walking in the right direction. We ran into some other cruisers (from one of the other ships in port) who assured us we were on the right track and we were there in just a couple more blocks. You should be able to recognize other cruisers and it makes us feel better when we are near people who are "in the same boat" (even if they are not from our ship). On our first time at Nassau we found someone's room key from another ship under one of the covered rest areas on the way back to the ships. I just gave it to someone who was headed to the ship it belonged to, so when the passenger got back, they would have their room key back.

I suppose you could use cash, but all the vendors had a means of taking credit cards. Have a great time!

The US Embassy has a warning about certain areas that are higher in crime. Having said that, my 16 year old son and I walked to the Queen's Staircase (and gave directions to a couple from a non-Disney cruise ship who were lost) and never felt uncomfortable. There was a fairly strong police presence near the port. If you stay in the immediate shopping district and main streets near the port you should be safe.

We were in Nassau on Tuesday. We considered going for a walk in to the town in the morning but it the whole port area was under construction and we had an activity booked in the afternoon so we chose to stay on the ship. Looked to me like the shops near the hair braiding area were demolished and being rebuilt.
