Does anyone know if the straw market in Nassau still has all of the designer knock off purses? I have read some conflicting posts. If anyone has been recently, your info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

we were there in Sept and there were lots of knock off designer bags to choose from.

It is my understanding that when the Bahamian authorities opened the new straw market building a few months ago the counterfeit goods were banned from the building. That does not mean that a. that might have changed by now b. that there aren't still stalls out on the street selling them. or c. it's not being properly policed.

I would be wary of buying counterfeit goods. Customs has been taking a closer look at these fakes and they could be confiscated (I'm not sure if there are fines associated with it).

was just there in March. The authorities have cracked down on the purses being in the new straw market building HOWEVER, if you go there and ask a bahamian lady standing somewhere near the front of the straw market entrance, she'll direct you 1/2 block up the street to two shops. the second shop had the better selection.

I honestly would not buy one. My dd bought one in STT and it broke within a month. I bought mine at the Nassau straw market in October. It broke before I even got home. JMO.

IMHO Not only will it not be the quality of the actual brand, but you would be contributing to the increased expense of the actual brand. They are having to spend huge amounts of money on shutting down knockoffs and lose potential sales on top of it.:good vibes
If people didn't buy knockoffs, the fake companies would go out of business and prices would drop on the authentic brands.

Not here to argue with anyone else on this thread, just wanted to let you know that when I was on the Island in early December there were a TON of knock off brands in the straw market. I was with a group of 26 people and more than half purchased purses and not one was stopped by customs.

Enjoy your trip! :woohoo:

I wouldn't buy them either. I don't know how much the knock-offs cost. But if you just watch sales or go to the outlets, you can get incredible deals there. I have bought Coach 50% off at Macy's, Michael Kors 50%+ off at outlet and Macy's, and probably my best deal $99 for a $400 Cynthia Rowley purse at Off Saks.

OP, keep your eye open and you'll be surprised at the deals you can get and you'll have quality that goes along with it :thumbsup2

Well I personally have a few knock off's but Michael Kors, Coach or Cynthia Rowley aren't the one's I would ever consider when buying...think more like Gucci, Prada, Dior, Balenciaga, LV, Proenza Schuler...bags that cost thousands of dollars not hundreds. JMO...that said the few that I do have are extremely good knock offs and I have never had a quality issue.

i was there in feb.. and i can say they they still sell knock off stuff.. however they are not all on display because well they are knock off

i know this because i bought a pair of sunglasses there which are fake..but they have not broken yet :)

Sure, like how your cable bills still stay high even if they are the only company in town?

I've heard that line so much about prices lowering, its too funny still. We don't want competition and we will lower our prices. Sure they will, but I've yet to see it. When was the last time the cell phone companies lowered your bill or gave you more features? ATT and VZW both took away unlimited data, started throttling, took away lower tiered data plans, reduced text plan options while increasing prices, etc...

Imagine if there was only ATT or VZW nationwide? ugh.

I assume, the counterfeit market is tolerated in the Bahamas, much like Europe. The police are aware, but it must be blatant.. Although, when you hear "La polizia", the four corners come up and prices drop, once you're around the corner.;):rotfl:

Sorry but you are WRONG about the price drop on the real product:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

This is not true. My dh used to work for Chanel. In accounting. They don't do crap to get rid of knockoffs. Actually, it's part of the "appeal" of the brand that it's desirable to knockoff. Believe me, anyone with money can tell the difference, even on a good knockoff.

Total ********. They will never drop prices on designer brands. The price=exclusivity. They THROW AWAY thousands of bags around the globe every year bc they don't want to discount and therefore devalue the brand.

Believe me, there's a lot more that goes into this industry than most people have any idea of. If you want a cheap real Chanel, buy one off of eBay that comes with the # tag. Theft is rampant among employees who know they can make $3-$5K off one bag.

if you have to pay more then $25.00 I would not get one! I lived in NYC and I had a few that I only paid $25.00 for and they would get other women to pay $50.00 to $100.00.
I don't get them any more b/c for $25.00 or so more I can get the real thing when they hit the outlet stores.

The outlet Mall sells authentic Gucci, Prada, Dolce, Fendi, Puccini, Ferragamo. Stella, Dior, YSL ..etc Of course, it's in Italy....but it's a great excuse for a road trip!!:cool1:

Well, I can't afford a several thousand dollar bag and I don't buy knockoffs. JMO, I'd rather have a several hundred dollar real bag than a knockoff that looks like a several thousand dollar handbag. Heck, I'd rather have a $50 Fossil purse than a knock-off, but again, that's JMO.

And the purse I'm currently carrying, got it for $175 in a neat leather shop in Santa Fe. It's unique and I get so many compliments on it :goodvibes
