New Earnhardt Jr. infraction cited

By JIM UTTER

AVONDALE, Ariz. - NASCAR officials confiscated the windshield from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 Chevrolet over the weekend.
According to spokesman Mike Zizzo, the windshield was too thin and not approved.

A penalty is likely, but to what extent will be determined by Nextel Cup series director John Darby, Zizzo said. The penalty should be announced this week.

Twice this season Earnhardt Jr. has lost points as a result of infractions – one for intentionally causing a caution and the second for using profanity during a live post-race interview.

Good gravy, Batman. I am just shaking my head right now...

My boys were screaming at Jr. not to knock off the Poweraid on top of his car. Another Racer did that and he had points knocked off cause Poweraid is a big sponsor of some races.

I think this whole point system is rotten.

I said it before and I will say it again. NASCAR is 10 years (at the most) away from being the next Professional Wrestling.

Anytime the governing organization of any sport thinks they are bigger the sport itself, you're doomed.

I just replied to the other nascar post about the same thing,so i guess its true then, wonder what there gone to do money fine or points,it should be just money for someting like this.

I actually feel differently. I think for having an unapproved part on your car should be a points fine. However, I think that profanity should be a monetary fine.

Taking points away from a driver for bad language would be like taking a touchdown away from a team if their coach cussed on T.V. I feel that once you earn points legally, they shouldn't be taken away. But, if the windshield wasn't approved and could have helped him with speed, then he should lose points.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Good grief!! You mean to tell me after all the times they (NASCAR) check that car over the corse of a weekend NO ONE noticed this before hand!? This is getting soooo ridiculous!

While I agree with most of your thoughts, I would like to wait and see if the alleged illegal part did indeed factor into the performance of the race car.

I kind of agree. But, if the team know they can only use approved parts, isn't using an unapproved windshield messing with the integrity of the NASCAR race car? If it didn't enhance the performance, that would be a tough call for me. My question would be: Why did they use it if it was not approved?

Nothing against Jr. I wouldn't think that he knew it wasn't approved.
