NASCAR Fans - Silly Season Rumors and Facts (1/18 today's practice speeds page3)

Marcie, I'm not sure about the hat being the one they are going to start the year off with. I checked the JeffGordonNetwork (yes, I'm a geek and I joined his fan club this year) and they don't have anything different there. I guess it's a crap shoot as to whether NASCAR.com has the most current stuff. Hope you find what you are looking for.

More news on Gordon:

Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, is scheduled to co-host with Kelly Ripa on the popular daytime talk show "Live with Regis and Kelly" on January 26 - 27. Although the four-time NASCAR Cup champion has co-hosted the show five times, this will mark the first time he has co-hosted on consecutive days. Following the show on January 27, Gordon will fly to Concord, N.C., to participate in the annual media tour stop at Hendrick Motorsports. "Live with Regis and Kelly" is in its 17th year of national syndication and continues to wake up millions of Americans each day.

Maybe he'll wear his hat there :)

Oooh, I'll have to remember to watch Live on those dates! Jeff always does a good job :D .

Add me to the list hoping this is Jr.'s year and that all the changes are for the best :cheer2: .

From Jayski.com:

4th season the magic number? The past three Cup champions - #97-Kurt Busch, #17-Matt Kenseth and #20-Tony Stewart - all won the title in their fourth season. This season will be #48-Jimmie Johnson’s fourth.(Caledonian Record)(1-21-2005)

Interesting but they forgot that if it's Jimmie's 4th season it's also Ryan Newman's 4th - and I think this year Jimmie is going to suffer from the same problem Newman had last year - Newlywed ;)

I'm excited about this season--and I'm hopefully be in FL Valentine's week---so tempted to check out Daytona.

I will be cheering for Jr. and several others---got to check some of these sites.

I just did a NASCAR search and found you guys!!! I was so lonely :guilty: .
(I just don't visit the Community Board enough!)

Great reading all the latest goodies and looking forward to

DAYTONA !!!!

NASCAR may suffer Krispy-Kreme's fate
Sunday, January 23, 2005

By BILL BOVENDER
Columnist

What do Krispy-Kreme and NASCAR have in common?

Both originated in the South. Both have headquarters in the South. For years, the "brands" were identified as Southern. You couldn't go to New York City and buy an original Krispy-Kreme, nor could you find a speedway which featured Cup races. Dunkin Doughnuts was as foreign as USAC, CART and the IRL. They belonged to those Yankees and, frankly, they could have ‘em since they could neither compete nor be compared with jelly-filled or the Bristols, Darlingtons, North Wilkesboros and Talladegas of the lower latitudes.

Krispy-Kreme went public and initiated an expansion program which looked like the North American business version of the Allied invasion of Europe in World War II.

Remember those pictures of jaded New Yorkers crowding the doorways of the new doughnut heaven, proclaiming the originals to be even better than sliced bread?

Speedway Motorsports, Inc. went public to be joined in short order by the France family and International Speedway, Inc. Suddenly, new tracks appeared in such places as New Hampshire, Kansas, Chicago, Arizona, Las Vegas and California. There is now an ongoing project to build a track in the home of the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets. Denver and Seattle can't be far behind.

Who knows - Boise and Honolulu may be on the drawing boards.

There is a term in football, "out-kicking your coverage." At least with respect to Krispy-Kreme, a similar adverse condition has now afflicted the doughnut king. Over-expansion has resulted in rapidly declining stock prices. The appetite for the holed-wonders appears to be relatively inelastic.

Could the same fate as has befallen Krispy-Kreme cause the NASCAR juggernaut to hit the wall even though television ratings remain high, the "Chase for the Cup" points playoff proved to be a huge success, and things seem as rosy as ever at the France compound in Daytona Beach?

Consider this: Ticket prices for Nextel Cup races have skyrocketed. No longer can that core of loyal fans travel from race to race each weekend because of the new tracks outside the South.

Moreover, in the name of safety, the banging, beating and fighting which once made NASCAR so attractive to fans is being rendered politically incorrect because it doesn't fit the corporate image.

NASCAR recently announced it is considering four locations for the placement of its Hall of Fame - Daytona Beach, the legendary birthplace of stock car racing; Charlotte, in the center of the fan base that made NASCAR; Atlanta, because, I suppose, to get to hell you must go through Atlanta; and, Kansas City, Kansas. Kansas City, Kansas? The home of Sprint, Kansas City, in the "Heartland," may have many endearing qualities, but it is not within the regular NASCAR fan's racing orbit.

I know, NASCAR is big time now. More drivers than ever are from places other than North Carolina and Alabama. The NASCAR banquet is held in Manhattan.

NASCAR is being run by the suits - not the bluejean and T-shirt crowd. The Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend is merely an echo from the past.

Perhaps I'm just a resentful retro-fan who longs for the days when former bootleggers sideswiped each other at venues which were within driving distance of real barbeque joints instead of the uppity bed and breakfasts of the Napa Valley.

With the issuance of a NASCAR press release, a professional publicist, who probably has a degree in marketing from Harvard, has proclaimed that the existing Halls of Fame in Darlington and Talladega have been rendered irrelevant.

NASCAR's relentless march to establish itself as the fourth major professional sport (I don't count the National Hockey League), seems to be "on track," if you will, announcing to those of us who grew up watching Ralph Earnhardt on the dirt at Hickory that while they'll still take our money, we are relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Bright lights and big cities are ripe for picking.

Notwithstanding, to the third generation Mr. France, a note of caution appears appropriate: You disregard the roots of the sport and the fans who made you a millionaire at your peril. Be careful you do not fall through that hole in the doughnut.

I'm hoping that Talladega's museum and Hall of Fame won't change---I loved going there with my folks.

In a little over 2 weeks---I will be passing by those Daytona signs. I don't know if I get to do anything at Daytona on my way back from WDW.

Inside Nextel Cup on Speed is going to 90 minutes :) They always seem to run out of time each week so hopefully this will help them. The only bad thing is they are changing it from 7PM ET to 8PM ET.

From Jayski.com

INC Expands to 90 minutes: Future plans for SPEED’s NASCAR broadcasts include an expansion of the popular Inside NEXTEL Cup TV program from an hour to an hour and a half each Monday evening.(FastMachines.com). What is Inside Nextel Cup? This popular series, hosted by Allen Bestwick and featuring NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers Michael Waltrip, Ken Schrader and Johnny Benson, features weekly recaps and analysis of Nextel Cup racing action. From the pits to victory lane Inside Nextel Cup provides up-to-date coverage of all the important develop-ments on the Nextel Cup circuit. The show will now air at 8:00pm/et on Monday's with re-airs during the week with the season premiere being on Monday, Feb 14th.(1-25-2005)

Vegas Fans check this out:

12 drivers to play Poker at Vegas: NASCAR is coming to the Palms in Las Vegas for a Celebrity Poker Tournament featuring 12 of the top NASCAR drivers. The $100,000 top award will benefit the winner's favorite charity and Michael Waltrip's Operation Marathon which provides support to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Tournament Director, Matt Savage will call the Texas Hold'em tournament beginning on Monday, January 31st at 7pm with 12 drivers being narrowed down to 6 drivers with the finals on Tuesday, February 1st beginning at 6pm. Featured in the tournament will be NASCAR drivers Michael Waltrip, Kyle Petty, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Elliott Sadler, Casey Mears and Dale Jarrett.
"Operation Marathon, Going the Distance for Kids" is Michael Waltrip's fundraising campaign to raise money for the operating expenses of the North Carolina based kid's camp. Waltrip pledged to raise $1 million for the camp in July of 2004 and has raised over $700,000 to date. Guests are welcome to come out and watch the tournament, however there will be limited space. No autographs please. For room reservation information, call toll free at (866) PALMS-RES, (866) 725-6773, or visit www.palms.com.(Michael Waltrip Racing PR)(1-25-2005)

They only list 10 drivers, wonder who the other 2 will be (maybe the Labonte boys ;)) Makes me wish I still lived in Vegas. Hope Fox or someone tapes the tournament and shows it on TV, it would be fun to watch.

I hope changing from 7:00 to 8:00 doesn't hurt Inside Nextel Cup. I think it stinks because at 7:00 there's nothing on anyway but at 8:00 it might be up against a good show.
Anyway, I have a question for you guys. Alan Bestwick will no longer be calling (?) the race from the booth he will now be a pit reporter, right? If so, is that considered a promotion or a demotion or equal? I really like Bestwick. I think he does a good job and seems very knowledgeable. I hate to think he was demoted.

I really hope the poker tournament is taped and broadcast as well. It would be fun to watch :) .

Bestwick's move - not sure. Have seen some comment that it's a way for NBC to get rid of him while others have said they are aiming for Weber (who replaces Bestwick in the booth) to hang himself but I'm not sure. Most folks I've read don't like it regardless of whose job is on the line. I really like Allen and hope he continues to do INC and the broadcasts. It's possible that Bestwick himself asked for the move (we'll probably never know for sure) to be closer to the action in the pits and to get away from Benny (kidding ;)).

Thanks for the info! Love Jr.!!! Now please help me. Someone mentioned in a post about drivers for DEI and mentioned Michael Andretti. Did they mean JOHN Andretti??? I have been out of (open wheel) motorsports reporting for a year but please tell me I am not soooo out of the loop that I didn't hear news about MICHAEL? He CAN drive stock cars but he's so busy owning Andretti/Team Green in the IRL and grooming his son Marco to fill the Andretti shoes. ????????

Well, it could be perceived as a demotion since they may not think that he has the "personality" to keep viewers entertained while he commentates. BUT, it might be his decision because working in the pits and being in the middle of the action is VERY exciting. Also, they generally put someone to report in pit lane who the drivers like and will talk to, which is a compliment. Why ABC hasn't pulled Jack Arute from reporting races is amazing - he is considered a jerk (putting it nicely) by most anyone he encounters.

Jeff Gordon is definitely on Santa's nauty list. :(
Today on Live with Regis and Kelly , Kelly said how she threatens her kids at Christmas time with Santa. Well, Jeff turns around and says wait till they find out he doesn't exist. :scared: Kelly just looked at him and I think she covered but I'm not sure. DD5 was watching with me and I was too busy making sure she didn't hear him. Luckily she was still concerned about Santa coming to take Kelly's kids toys back. Poor Jeff, you could see on his face when he realized what he said how bad he felt. It was funny but bad at the same time. :)

That's to funny about Jeff! Would of loved to see that!

Thanks for the heads up on the shows....I'll be sure to set my VCR!

Oh Jeffy boy, there most certainly is a Santa! He even came to my house to visit my children. Here he is with my almost 1 yo DD. And, how else do you explain his 4 Winston Cup championships other than gifts from Santa!!! :confused3 ;)

Well, not too much longer until the smell of rubber and fuel gets my blood flowing again. I hope everyone is having a great off-season.
