Nanny show theoretical question

I'm watching America's Supernanny and it made me wonder: does watching these Nanny shows help some people learn techniques that help their own family? Or is it just pure entertainment?

I really don't know as I won't have a child to parent for 6 months

My goddaughter swears that everything she needed to know about childrearing came from Supernanny, Jo Frost. Potty training, time outs, going to sleep in one's own bed. . .all went smoothly because she'd learned from Jo. Her oldest, btw, was a strong-willed child. Heck, still strong willed, just a sweet, smart strong-willed child who has learned how to trammel her determination productively.

My sister said she got some real insight from watching the Supernanny...mostly in regards consistency & follow through.

I used to watch Nanny 911 and Supernanny...I don't even have kids. But, yes, I did learn great techniques from Supernanny about timeouts and I have implemented them with my nieces and nephew and it works amazingly well. One day when I was babysitting them I used her technique and when their mom came home I let her know I did a timeout and she was SHOCKED that it worked. She said timeouts never work for her. I explained to her how I did it and she just was in complete awe.

I also love Supernanny's bedtime routine. I don't believe in physical punishment/discipline (yes, I was spanked as a child) so I enjoy her methods and they work very well.

When my kids were younger I used to LOVE watching supernanny, Jo Frost. I like some of the others, picked up a lot of good tips that have paid off in spades over the years. Now, if I was honest, alot of her tips & processes, are very similar to how my mom raised us so maybe thats where my buy-in comes from.

I don't know how important the "steps" are but I know the main key is consistancy in your reactions...

I always wanted to sit my one DSD down in front of her show! She is so inconsistent with her DD. She has turned her into a beast because of her failure to parent.

I use her suggestions with my grandkids. I look after the 3 youngest one's (one all the time the other two on non school days) they are 7, 5 and almost 3. They are really well behaved here as they know that when I say something I mean it. They clean up, take their dishes to the kitchen, eat at the table, and have only had to do a time out with each one of them twice before just the warning was enough. Their parents have a hard time with any of those things. It is funny when they all come here and the parents are telling them not to do things and all I have to do is look at them and ask them if what they are doing is allowed in my house. They stop. I am not really strict and they love coming here. They just know the rules.

In addition to her timeout method, we also used Jo Frost's method for getting DD to stay in her room and go to sleep. If we hadn't seen it done on the show, we probably would have been at our wits end trying to figure out what to do.

I think that for many people, seeing her use the techniques, seeing the struggles and finally the positive results helps to better understand and use the process. You could read the same techinques in a book, but seeing them play out makes it much more relatable, easier to understand and easier to implement.

I learn a lot from watching shows like that (I am a mother of four). It gives me insight to my own bad parenting habits and what I need to do to change for the better. Parenting can suck the life out of you, I can relate to many of the burned out, checked out moms. My house isn't total chaos with kids swearing and beating on each other, though. I cry when I watch some of the shows, it's not easy to see kids who are desperate for their parents' attention and hurting :worried:.

I have a friend that teaches (pre-K) 4 yr. olds. She has been using the techniques for years and claims that they are amazingly effective, when other methods have failed.

BTW, is SuperNanny still on? I haven't seen it on TV in a long time.
