Naming a child Constance?

My sister is having a baby and is strongly considering the name Constance for a girl. I think the name is too old-fashioned and everyone will call her Connie (which my sister does not like and insists will not happen). Of course, I realize my sister can name her kid anything she wants, but what do you think? Are there any cute, modernish nicknames that could be derived from Constance?

I'm biased - my grandmother, Constance (in my sig), died 3 weeks ago. I think it's a lovely name and I'm now considering it, should I ever have a child.

I wouldn't choose it, but it's not horrible. I've heard much worse.

is your sister's lastname Goodwyfe? Constance Goodwyfe...has a nice ring.

I have a niece ( grown) with that name and we call her Connie

I like it at least she won't be one of many.

I like it ok, I've definitely heard much much worse. But you are right she will probably get called connie alot. Can't think of any other nicknames that could come off of Constance.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George Costanza was being called "can't stand ya" by his gym coach. Hope that doesn't get brought up with her, but its possible from some really mean kids. But that's a stretch I don't think I would worry about it.

My sister's have kids named Michael, Jennifer,& Stephen (and there's more but this only applies to these names). None of these kids are really called anything other than these names. Names do not have to be shortened. I went to school with a Robert, a Michael and and Stephen. Their names were never shortened.

I wouldn't pick the name myself, but it isn't a horrible name. good luck to your sister!

If I ever had a daughter she would be called Martha Caroline after my great grandmother, if a boy William Henry after my grandfather.

I named one of my children Margaret and was warned it was old-fashioned and that people would call her Margie (or worse, Marge). Her nickname is Meg. Simple. All I have to say is that Constance is a real name with a legitimate spelling and classic roots. She could do much worse.

DD's name is Catherine. Not Cathy, Kate, or Katie, just Catherine. Even when she was small she would correct people of they tried to shorten her name. We decided if she wanted to shorten she could but so far likes it the original way.

It is really up to what the parents want to call their child. Eventually people will get the hint that you go by what you tell them your name is and that you don't have a nickname.

I have always felt that it is strictly up to the parents what they want to name their child. I didn't really care what other people thought of the names we picked out.

I like the name Constance; it's unique. I have a son named Anthony, and the deal was we would call him Anthony only and not Tony (Anthony was my husband's choice, I wanted to name him Jordan). He has always been Anthony, and he's 21 now. We just never called him anything else.

I worked with a lady named Constance when we lived in VA. They called her "STAN" she said her family calls her "Stani" (she was the youngest of 5 or 6 kids).

We have a friend named Constance... she has hated it all of her life (she is 50 something now and still wishes it were different). She goes by Coni... why she has never liked her name I don't know. I like the name and don't think it would be bad.

I don't mind the name, I like old fashion names. Be warned, she will not find key chains, pencils, bracelets, etc. with her name on it though (my DD, Charlotte always gets upset when she can't find her name on things). It doesn't have to be shortened unless she wants it to be. I have 3 kids, Zachary, Charlotte, and Mary Grace and we have not shortened them. Some of the kids at school have shortened DS to Zach but they call him both Zach & Zachary. I will ALWAYS call him Zachary.

Constance is a lot better than a lot of names I hear these days. I especially don't like how we've turned a bunch of boys names into girls names, but that's another thread and I digress.

Constance is a very pretty name. You might consider a shorter, more contemporary middle name so she can use that instead of connie if she finds constance too long.

Tacy?
From the Betsy-Tacy books. I believe the girl in the book's name was Anastasia. But Contance has a similar sound I think

I'm a Kathryn and I'm not called anything but Kathryn. As a child, everyone wanted to call me Katie, though...:confused3 Didn't let em! :thumbsup2

I like Constance but HATE Connie.
