Naming a child Constance?

I do like old fashioned names (if I had a girl right now I'd either name her Eleanor, Daphne, Silvia, or Elsa), but Constance is not a favorite. It's a pretty name, though, and honestly older names are coming back. I'd much rather hear of a new little Constance than a new little <insert trendy, newer name here>.

If I ever had a daughter she would be called Martha Caroline after my great grandmother, if a boy William Henry after my grandfather.

Lovely names. I know a Martha who just turned 14.

I don't like it personally. It sounds like such a grown up name for a little baby.

My son is Nicholas and at school they call him Nick, which I don't particularly care for. And now he writes Nick on all his papers..but I think that's because he's too lazy to write his entire name :lmao:

She'll only be a baby for a few years, though, and have to live with and use her name for the rest of her life.

Being an old movie fan, it reminds me of Constance Bennett, who I loved in Topper and Topper Takes a Trip, and who was the sister of Joan Bennett of Dark Shadows fame. I like the name; certainly WAY better than naming her Lindsay, Brittany or Paris!!

I think Constance is a great name! There's nothing wrong with an old fashioned name. My parents named me Emily way before it was fashionable.

And I wouldn't worry about how to make a nickname out of it. I've been Em, Emmy - hate that one - Emma-Lou, Mez, Chantilly and Demi just to name a few. Shoot, for a time in high school I was Charlie. :upsidedow

My mom's name is Constance. She has always been called Connie. I didn't even think there were any alternate nicknames.

Yeah, if your sister hates "connie' , Constance is an unfortunate choice. The girl will grow up and her friends will call her what they like. Just like my friends who insisted their son would NOT become "DILL" having named him Dillon. Everyone calls him Dill. Some of his friends call him "Dill Weed." Lol!

My son's name is Philip-not Phil. We've always called him Philip.
I love the name Constance.

I have a co-worker named Constance. I think she's around 22 or 23. Her nick name is Consti.

I like Constance. It is a lovely name. I don't know why every other child has to be named Haley, Amber, Brittany, Ashley etc. (with all their strange spelling variations) and a gorgeous name like Constance gets flak.

My DD14 is has a very old-fashioned name after my grandmother and many people try to "give" her nicknames. We simply and calmly correct them and say that the "nickname" is not her name.

I like "Constance" and all old, traditional names.

As long as they don't name her Konstynse! :rotfl:

My name is Christine and I have NEVER been called Chris. My mom was determined that I be called Christine and it has been fine. There are some people, who don't know me well, who assume that I answer to Chris. So when someone calls me Chris, I usually don't respond because I don't think they are talking to. This usually works pretty well and they are calling me Christine before you know it!

:lmao: The only thing worse than "creative spelling" on more modern names is trying to reinvent classic names.

In a world of Jynnefirs, LeQuanshas, Jaycens, and such, I think Constance is beautiful.

People always try to shorten names or give people nicknames, no matter what the name is. I'm Laura and there really isn't a commonly-used nickname for that, fortunately. Still, I often meet new people who try to call me Laurie. I don't answer--not that I'm being rude, but my brain won't register that as my name. But I don't think I experience that sort of thing as often as someone named Constance would. I know several Constances, and they're all called Connie.

Just make sure your friend knows she'll spend the rest of her life correcting people! :rotfl:

I named one of my children Margaret and was warned it was old-fashioned and that people would call her Margie (or worse, Marge). Her nickname is Meg. Simple. All I have to say is that Constance is a real name with a legitimate spelling and classic roots. She could do much worse.

Hey I'm Margaret, go by Margie but I do HATE Marge but I still get called it A LOT!

I love the name Margaret! I wouldn't have given my daughter a name I didn't love. It was my grandmother's name and I think it is very pretty but there definitely are a lot of nicknames for Margaret. Margie isn't too bad but it seems like a woman's name. I don't mind Maggie, but our neighbor's had a dog named Maggie at the time our daughter was born so it was kind of out of the question. Some nicknames just don't seem right for little kids though. Peggy and Marge were out. Meg is perfect - the only problem we have is that everyone just assumes that Meg is short for Megan or Meghan. No matter what you name your child, people will make assumptions about it. You just roll with it.
