Anyone who cared to find out my kids' names could do so in about 5 minutes of just listening (and would likely pick up on the more personal nicknames we use, not just proper first names), so I never bought into the advice about not putting names on backpacks and other gear.

This! I'd get their names on it.

Check with your school. At my DD's school, first names are NOT allowed on backpacks, lunchboxes, or exterior clothing for safety reasons. Most of the kids walk or bike to school and once they get older, do so without a parent.

Personally, I think it is a waste. We like to donate ours when we are done.

DD had a mini backpack for stuff for the plane, resort, etc. She didn't take it to the parks.

It was plain pink and I just glued a Pongo applique on it since she loves dogs and Disney.
She was thrilled, and it was unique.

The backpacks would be for the drive down and in the parks. They would be more cinch sacks and not school back pack type. 2 of the kids would carry their own/take care of them. (they would be old enough to keep track themselves) I haven't decided on if the younger two would take theirs to the parks or not.

As several of you mentioned, I wasn't worried about handing down or donating because my kids will use them until they are ruined and then get tossed. Plus they wouldn't just use them for this trip, my oldest would use hers as a dance bag when not on the trip and my son for his sports as well.

Thanks so much for all your info!!!
