Nail polish remover

Couple things with Acetone.

It's one solvent that can be used in the making of Crystal Meth. There are others, more popular even, and I doubt this is the total reason for the store's restriction.

Acetone and Janitor Strength Bleach (10%) will produce chloroform. Pretty obscure application so I doubt this is a real issue.

A few years back everyone got really panicky about terrorists going to beauty salons and buying hair bleaching products.

What they were/are buying is Peroxide and Acetone. A relatively easy improvised explosive called TARP is made with these two ingredients and not much else. Acetone, being a precurser to triacetonetriperoxide can be restricted by order from the ATF.

Generally, it's just a liability and the stores choose to cover their buns by getting some added assurances.

The store's policy that someone quoted upthread, states that it is because it is used in the making of meth.

So do people who produce methamphetamine not have a valid ID? Some random person comes in, uses their ID and gets it. How does that stop them from using it however they want? Not sure what the ID part is supposed to accomplish.

.

YES!!!! The thing is, are they actually recording your ID information, or are they just glancing at your DOB to make sure you are over 18 (as if MOST illegal drug manufacturers are under 18??? I'm sure the majority of thugs cooking up meth with household solvents are of legal age)

I really don't see them keeping logs of so and so who bought such and such on this or that date. When I have had to show ID for controlled substances (ie pseudophed or prescription pain meds that I picked up for my DH) They have only ever looked at my DOB. I could have signed Mickey Mouse to the signature log for the prescription, and they would have never matched my name to my ID anyway???

What purpose does it really serve?

I think I am going to CVS to buy nailpolish remover to see if they card me.

HHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMM most anything used incorrectly not the way it was meant to be used can be harmful or turned into something illegal.

In my old neighborhood in Philly there was a supermarket right past a highway overpass. Under the pass were always discarded empty boxes of white cake mix bought from the supermarket-drug dealers were buying the cake mix to cut the cocaine with. I don't believe the store ever stopped people from buying multiple boxes of cake mix at one go without ID.

My point is that criminals will always find a way. :worried:

When I bought it at CVS the other day, the cashier had to input ALL of the information on the card. It was a huge nuisance and took forever with the line growing and growing right behind me. Never again.

Well, we'll just have to disagree. When you talk about it in single instances - sure, I'll give up a little freedom for this problem. But it happens over and over and over. And every time it's just a tiny bit. But sooner or later you've lost more than just a tiny bit of freedom. I personally think we already have.

I absolutely agree with this. And it is really scary to me.

I bought a gallon of acetone at Home Depot a couple months ago, so I'd agree it's not the issue.

I grew up in the "meth capital" of the state. It wasn't uncommon to see people walking around at the store buying 10 gallons of bleach and boxes upon boxes of wooden matches. It was just sad and scary!

I am okay showing my ID for anything that will help limit that... I have to show my ID for my allergy medicine, which doesn't bother me at all. Claritin D is the only thing that works when my allergies get really bad.

I see both sides of this argument about laws. I think it's a really slippery slope once freedoms are restricted but if restrictions help to catch meth makers, that's great. I'm just not sure they do.

I do think it's very odd for a store to restrict something when it's not the law to restrict it. I would probably shop elsewhere.

Since this thread is over six months old, just curious does CVS still have this policy?
