DH does consulting occasionally. He looked online to see what consultants in his field are paid (in the area where we live) and set his hourly fee accordingly.

I have experience in the field and the education to back up my expertise, just not in consulting. They hired me for my knowledge, not for my experience in doing consulting or side projects.
