Mystic, CT question....

We're going to a family reunion of sorts in the Mystic area (Esker Point) the first weekend in August. My mom is staying in Groton, I think.

I'm looking for family friendly recommendations for a hotel that is close to that area. There are 5 of us--the kids are 16, 14, and 7. I would prefer someplace with a pool for burning off energy.

Thanks!
Debbi

I would head over to Misquamicut in RI (15-20 minutes or so from Mystic) since you are going in the summer. The beaches in RI are very nice as well. I am not familiar with the local hotels there but most are not franchise type hotels and are locally owned hotels.

I grew up in Groton, walking distance to Esker Point. I hope it's nicer now than it was!

My sister still lives in Groton, when we visit, we stay in the Super 8. However, it's only 4 people per room, no pool. We get 2 rooms (there are 6 of us), and we're not there to do more than sleep.

There used to be an Amerisuites right by Mystic Seaport with a pool and continental breakfast, reasonably priced. You can stay 5 in a room. Unfortunately, they changed the name so I don't know what it's called now, but it would be on Greenmanville Ave.

Keep in mind, it's prime season in Mystic, so Groton may be a cheaper option. I've had great success with Travelocity--that's how I get the best price when I head to Groton.

Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have. And if you get a chance, try Abbott's for a meal. It's an experience--great seafood that you eat while sitting on a dock. Mind the seagulls, though.

We had stayed at the Hilton in Mystic a few times. It has an indoor pool and across from a little mall and the aquarium.
We actually had a family reunion there once.

Another time, I was able to priceline a 4* in the Mystic Area and ended up with the Marriot. It was nice...big convention/wedding type place. I think the Hilton is more kid friendly, but the other was bigger giving you lots of room to walk around.

We also stayed at the Mystic Hilton. It was nice. My daughter loved the pool and I am so glad it was indoor since we didn't have ideal weather when we were there.

Kitchen Little is a great breakfast choice, but get there early because it gets crowded!

I'm from the area, so I'll chime in with my thoughts..
Misquamicut is an absolute zoo in the summer. Traffic is crazy there and there are very few hotels. The few hotels there are private (not chains) and are expensive.

Mystic Marriott isn't really in Mystic- it's in Groton. We were all wondering why they called themselves "Mystic" Marriott- but I guess it's because the back corner of their property actually is on the Mystic border (or that's what I was told) and Mystic is much more of a destination spot as opposed to Groton. They are right off exit 88. Not that it's a problem- but it's misleading to think that you're paying for a prime spot in Mystic when you still have to get on the highway and drive a few minutes to get to the tourist attractions.

Groton is pretty close to Mystic (Mystic is exit 90 and Groton is 87/88/89). And yes, hotels would generally be cheaper there.

In Mystic- the Days Inn has an outdoor pool, the Howard Johnson has an indoor pool. The Amerisuites is gone, I think. There is another hotel there in its place, but I can't remember the name of it. The Mystic Hilton is nice.

In Groton- there is a Hampton Inn right near I-95, which would make it very easy to find. It has an indoor pool & is on a main street there in Groton with lots of restaurants/shopping nearby. Very centrally located and a fairly new hotel.

I'll have to check out that Hampton Inn for my next jaunt down to Groton. My kids would be thrilled with an indoor pool, but I'm usually too cheap. Plus, the Super 8 is right by my sister's house (walking distance).
