Any good ideas for a mystery book from my DS? He's in 4th grade and is a very good reader. He has his first book report assignment and I could use some ideas!! Thanks.

Shelby

Look at some of the sports themed mystery books that John Feinstein has written

My DD in fourth grade likes
"The Best Halloween Ever" by Barbara Robinson it is a bit of a mystery- very light
and she also liked a book called "The Old Willis Place" by Mary Downing Hahn
she got at the book fair.
It is supposed to be scary -but it couldn't have been really scary -or she wouldn't have liked it.

When I was that age, we all loved the Encyclopedia Brown books by Don Sobol. He was a boy detective who solved mysteries. He has his own detective agency and he's the son of the police chief. I really enjoyed that series at that age.

Cryptid Hunters by Roland Smith

The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid

The Maximum Ride series

Cam Jansen Series by David A. Adler

When I taught 4th grade, the boys were into the mysteries by Bill Wallace--their favorite was Trapped in Death Cave--lots of age-appropriate suspense!

The 39 Clues -- The Maze of Bones (Book 1). My DS who is 9 just finished this book and loved it!

I second the 39 Clues - new series of books started by Rick Riordan. I read it and loved it..bought it for my 4th grade son, who is too busy with book 6 of Harry Potter to start it yet.

Cabin Creek Mystery series is good. It's kind of scary, but not too bad. Cam Jansen is ok, but they are mostly grade 3 level. Cabin Creek is a 4th/5th grade level.

The Westing Game is a newberry classic. Our whole family enjoyed it.

I would also recommend Holes. If he's a good reader, he would enjoy it.

I also put in a vote for The Westing Game.

Another good one is Ten Little Indians or And Then There Were None.

John Bellairs books have some good mysteries in them, while still being fantasy type stories. I wasn't a Hardy Boys fan, but I'd definitely recomment anything in The Three Investigators series.

The Westing Game was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going to head to the library tomorrow and look up some of your suggestions. I'll definitely check out The Westing Game.

Holes would be good but he saw the movie. I wonder if he would still enjoy reading it. Hmmm... He does LOVE the movie.

Thanks again!
