myspace.com are your kids on it?

Although my DH is a programmer and in the computer business and I love DISing...I do not think I will let my girls IM (I took it off our computers) and I certainly wouldn't want them on websites like myspace.com.

Our computer will only be used by the girls for homework and will be in a central location. If they want to talk to their friends, they can call them.

I know, I'm being overprotective and unrealistic, but that's how I feel right now while they are 6 & 9. We'll see when they are older.

I lived without the internet till I was in my late 20's early 30's and I did just fine. They will too.

Boy, our kids are growing up younger and younger.

I don't think that you are being overprotective at all. You have to make decisions on what is right for your family. Our DD has IM, but we have a computer room with three computers and her's is one of them. Also, we have rules as I said in an early post. With that said...she knows that if I walk into the room at any time and ask to see the nature of the conversation then she has to show me. I do not do that very often, but every once in a while, I ask her about it.

Another mother told me recently that her DD closes out all of her IM's if she walks into the room. I told her IMHO that was a red flag. Not that I need to see everything...but when it appears things are being hidden...then I will investigate.

I think in this time and age we have no choice but to protect our children.

The funny thing about my DD is she does not seem to hide things from us. It is my prayer that this continues through all of her high school years.

alot of my friends have them, but i don't. they have definatly lied about their age, because like someone else said, you have to be 14 to make an account. and they are all under 14. and i agree with the person that said people just put in a random age. my friends wanted me to make one, but i probably won't for a while.

I have a page on it, but I basically have only used it to put some general comments about myself for when I IM people. I certainly don't blog (what is the point of that?) and there really isn't anything in my profile to offend anyone whatsoever. I agree though there is a lot of trashy profiles, and it takes someone of my age to weed them out. I have relatively few "friends" on it because I screen them very thoroughly before adding them. I wouldn't recommend it for less than college/university age folks.

I want to thank you guys who are on the site for your input, DD is sort of concerned for her friends who are on it and their folks don't know about it, so for her to read "normal" responses form you guys made her feel better hoping that her friends are conversing with kids like you and not the "questionable" type images being presented. That being said however...she can't make their choices for them. Anyway...thanks again!

Pam
