If you are looking for nicer hotels, the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes is lovely. It is not beachfront, but they have private beach access with a shuttle. You can also drive your car to the private beach access point. We also like the Marriott Grande Dunes, which is beachfront. Kingston Plantation is also nice.
If you are looking for a hotel with a water park, Dunes Village is okay. We have stayed there a couple of times. The rooms are nothing special, and the water park is a smaller, not as nice version of Great Wolf Lodge (no lifeguards, a bit run down, but the kids still have fun). The water park is in two buildings at Dunes Village, which is not fun if you are going when it is cold out. Some of our friends have stayed at the Breakers and say it is nicer than Dunes Village, but we have never stayed there.
I would advise against Captain's Quarters - DH and DD stayed there last weekend while in MB for a soccer tournament and said it was awful.
We enjoy going to Myrtle Beach for the aquarium, mini golf, shopping and restaurants. We find most of the hotels to be a bit worn down.
