We're planning a Myrtle Beach trip for May 21-25, trying to get out before the rates go up for Memorial Day weekend and to avoid huge crowds as well. Anyone have ideas for budget-friendly, but nice, places to stay, restaurants, or attractions? It will be our first trip, and there are so many condo/hotel choices, I'm a little overwhelmed. Is it generally a safe place, or are there areas to avoid? A few places we've seen online are Compass Cove, Ocean Reef, Sea Mist, and Crown Reef. Anyone have experience with these or others?

We have gone to Myrtle Beach about the last 5 years for Harley Davidson Bike Week. This bike week is the weekend before and after Mothers Day(about 10 days of bikers). With that being said, and I don't want to be flamed...but this bike week is nothing compared to Daytona or Sturgis. Myrtle Beach is so spread out that alot of times you don't realize that there are over 300,000 bikers there for the week. Our group of approx 30-40 bikers (all from the same town) [we always joke that we ride over 750 miles to party with the same people that we party with back home] LOL  stay at the Sandcastle South Resort. Sandcastle Resorts has several properties(south and another one at the Pavilion-which is very conveniently located and I believe a north location in N Myrtle Beach). They are nice and clean too. Great rates also. The south location has covered parking, restaurant,indoor/outdoor pool, lazy river, and hot tubs all located on the beach.

good luck

We stayed at Compass Cove last year. We really enjoyed it and rarely left the property. One thing that really helped our budget was to cook in our little kitchen rather than eating out. You can find tons to do there but my kids really loved all the fun stuff like the pools, lazy rivers, etc. Have fun! I miss it!

We returned two weeks ago from a week-long trip. We stayed at the Long Bay Resort and really liked it. We got a 25% discount by booking online for a week-long stay. I also got coupons from restaurant.com for Original Benjamins (good seafood buffet) and Buckys (hamburger joint). We had trouble coming up with the minimum purchase at Buckys ($25) without adding ice cream for dessert - no big deal though, we like ice cream!!! My kids loved Magiquest at Broadway at the Beach. It is an interactive game (indoors). You get 90 minutes of play time, a magic wand and three duels for $24. Non-players (parents) have to pay - $8 first visit, $5 second, free after that. Non-playing grandparents are free. We used coupons from the books available everywhere to get discounts on mini-golf (twice) and donuts (once). We got a room with a kitchen so we had every breakfast in the room and many lunches in the room. Packed a picnic for some days to save some money. Take you own beach chairs and umbrellas with you to save some more if you are not flying. Rentals are high.

Have fun!

House of Blues has a great breakfast buffet almost every day of the week for $5. Not a huge variety, but all the staples, including cooked to order omelets, and the food was great!

We went last October and fell in love with it.
The pace, the people, everything. I can't remember for the life of me what our condo was though! We split up a month with three different families so we only had to pay $400 for 10 days. It was nice and clean and right on the ocean between two piers. However, it was in Murrell's Inlet and not in Myrtle Beach (10 minute drive).
Must do's on our list that I HIGHLY recommend!!
1. Captain Dick's Salt Marsh Tour - by far the most fun, educational and enjoyable. You go out on a big pontoon boat (seats about 60 folks) with the captain, first mates and a marine biologist. You get to touch creatures from the bottom of the marsh/ocean as they drag the bottom and put everything in a big bin. The MB takes out anything dangerous and puts it into a big tank so you can see it. You get to drop fish, see tons of dolphins, explore a private island, and so much more. The awesome part was that the MB had the answers to all of the kids' questions and you really got to be interactive with nature. The whole tour was about 2.5 hours long and just wonderful. Worth every penny and it was probably one of the cheapest things we did!

2. Broadway at the Beach was a lot of fun. Neat stores (Disney included!), entertainment. We did MagicQuest but it was expensive. And the Build A Bear was really neat. Food is expensive there. We also ate at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville which is more than a meal but an adventure. Really enjoyed it. Portions are HUGE so don't feel guilty about sharing!
3. Huntington Beach State Park (in Murrel's Inlet)- this park is enormous and has a castle! If you are an American History buff, this is a must do! There's also a conservation area (free), tours, etc. I think admission to the park was around $10 for the car. You can picnic there (don't feed the alligators!), go to the beach and just enjoy the beauty of Myrtle Beach. IT's not crowded like many of the beaches and is quite relaxing.
4. This we did not do but I wanted too - Plantation Tours.
5. Brookgreen Gardens - also includes a slave cemetary. We'll be going there on our next trip!

A great place to eat is the Texas Roadhouse. Good deals for two if you eat before 6pm. The dinner rolls are to die for.
Avoid the Calabash Seafood buffets. Most of the buffets are overpriced and rather crappy. We went to one and it was about $85 for the four of us and there was next to nothing worth eating. Total rip off.
If you see it, go to Sam's Diner. There are two. It's an old style diner with counter service. The food is fresh, hot and tasty, reasonably priced. I felt transported back in time about 50 years. lol The one down the road from our condo had a big arcade connected to it in good working condition.
What I liked the most about Myrtle Beach was that everyone was so relaxed. No one was rushing, cars weren't honking every five minutes. I can't wait to go back there.
OH and USE THE COUPONS!!! They will save you some serious cash!

You will be coming in on the end of the Harley bike week and the beginning of Black bike week...For that reason I would not stay on that main strip for any amount of money!! It is going to be LOUD and I mean VERY LOUD!! If I were you I would consider going to North Myrtle or even going a little further south to Surfside, Murrell's Inlet, or even as far as Pawleys Island (VERY NICE area by the way). As far as crime goes the whole time I lived there the only crime I heard much about was theft. Young kids breaking into cars or stealing from local shops.

Go to Broadway at the Beach for shopping, eating, just hanging out..it is a nice place and will take you hours to walk it all. Our favorite place to eat there is Liberty (they have pretty good food). There is a place across the street from there called Bullwinkles that is great for little kids. There are a few water parks there you can go to. If you like flowers go south on 17 and visit Brookgreen Gardens (it is really pretty there). As far as the beach goes I would go to the state parks for hanging out on the beach to avoid the "young" crowd.

We have stayed at Sea Mist 3 or 4 times. While it isn't 5 star by any means, it is clean, safe and fun. I would definitely stay there again. I recommend getting the package that includes admission to the Family Kingdom Amusement Park, Water Parks, etc. Then your only additional expense is food! :thumbsup2

I live in Georgia now, but I grew up in SC and lived there until I was 26. I also lived in Myrtle Beach for one summer while working.

There is a small stretch of beach before getting into N. Myrtle and at the very end of the Ocean Blvd strip. This stretch of beach is one of the nicest along the area unless you go way south of Myrtle or way north.

Ocean Sands Club is one of the resorts there. Annie's Beach Bar is part of the resort and is right on the beach. Very cool place. The beach on this strip is very wide, too... something you're not going to find along the main drag. Beach erosion has taken it's toll on the main strip. This strip of beach isn't connected to the main strip as there is a small inlet separating the two beaches. You can't drive straight up Ocean Blvd and get to it. It's just past where Ocean Blvd runs out. You have to go out onto Kings Hwy to get back to that strip of beach I'm refering to. I know this is a lot of info. lol

On the road that takes you to Ocean Sands Club is a restaurant called Bimini's Oyster Bar. It's not to be missed. My inlaws have a condo beside Ocean Sands and we go to Bimini's several times during our trip. My DD3 even enjoys it!

I agree that those Calabash style restaurants are usually dumps. Avoid them. They're a waste of money.

Will you have kids? Most of the bikers stay along the main drag and just south of Myrtle typically.

If you want to avoid all that... then maybe look into going towards the north end (one of my favorites... quaint beach town) Cherry Grove.

I almost forgot, and this is VERY IMPORTANT... Room location at Sea Mist can make or break your stay. The first time we stayed there we were ocean front in one of the towers - MISTAKE! We were on the 12th floor and could never get an elevator. Once DH ran up the stairs to get something we left in the room because the elevator wait was soooooo long. The BEST room location we found was overlooking the Children's Activity Pool. That building only has three floors. The view is amazing! It felt like we were in the tropics.

http://www.sciway.net/maps/myrtle-beach-south-carolina-map.html

Look at this map. Find APACHE PIER along the middle on the coast. That road, Shore Dr. is the area I'm referring to as that small strip. Lake Arrowhead Rd is the road that come from Kings Hwy and also has Bimini's Oyster Bar.

This is a great area as it's close to everything without being down in the not so nice section of Myrtle. I'm not crazy about the area between Briarcliffe and Ingram, either. I remember it being kind of slummy when I lived there.

At the very top is Cherry Grove. Nice beaches and a nice beach community, but kind of far from lots of stuff.

Hope some of this info helps.

I agree with you about Lake Arrowhead Dr. Very nice and quiet there. Ocean Annie's is a great beach bar too. You are near some great shopping too. Since I was the orignal person to talk about Bike Week. Yes the bikes can be loud, but Harley's just are that way. I have heard (but have never been there)that black bike week is much louder than the regular week. We,as a group of 30-40, have stayed at both Oceans Sands and down at Sandcastle South(about 1 mile from the airport). But the area is so spread out and many choices of roads to take, you don't always see us. I do agree to stay away from Calabash seafood rest. waste of good money.

We Love Myrtle Beach! We usually camp but have family that rent trailers at Pirate Land. The campgrounds are in a beautiful spot right on the ocean, short walk. I agree with the following:

We second the Shore Drive area (where Sands Ocean Club is located). It is like a small little town all by itself where you will find restaurants (Bimini's, Rossi's, a Mexican Place etc) Bars (Sand Bar, Ocean Annies) Clubs (Sands Club, 2001 which rocks), there is a Walmart, grocery store, liquor store and beer retailer all without ever venturing up on the busy Kings Highway. Lots of Condos and a few hotels in the area. Only 10 minutes from main MB, Broadway and less than that from Barefoot landing.

I live in MB and since this weekend is REALLY crowded with the bike week and just the holiday in general, I would suggest you book now.

I would suggest Kingston Plantation. Lots of activities for the kids and tons of stuff to do. I would also suggest Crown Reefe. Its in the south end and the bikers stay up north.

Broadway at the Beach has everything under the sun to do with lots of places to eat. Logans Steak house next to the big mall off 501 is really good and cheap.
I would try one of the water parks. If you get the local Sunday paper you will find a coupon for $14.00 dollars a person for Wild Water and Wheels in Surfside which is on the south end.

If you want any more info please PM me.

I live in SC as well...I've been during this time. Do not stay anywhere near the MB "Strip"

Your vacation is basically between two bike weeks....You will see remnants of the Harleys on the first part...then on the last part Atlantic Bike Week starts. Traffic will be awful on the strip.

I would wholeheartedly add my "second" to the recommendation of Kingston Plantation...it is beautiful, and you're situated near North Myrtle Beach near almost everything.

what about the condo Reniassance Tower~has anyone ever stayed here?

We are going May 29-June 3. We are taking our camper and staying at Pirateland. We went last year and had a blast.
We spent the most of our time just relaxing on the beach.
We went to Ghosts and Legends and Alligator Adventure (a little pricy) at Barefoot Landing.
We also walked around and went to IMAX at Broadway at the Beach.

In the past we have stayed at Sea Mist, The Reef, Crown Reef, and Holiday Inn on the South Beach. We liked all of them. The Reef and Crown Reef are my favorites.

My girls love to eat at Rocky and Bullwinkles, however we went by there last summer and it appeared to be closed down. Does anyone know if it will re-open?

Have fun on your trip!

We have been several times and my favorite hotel is Camelot by the Sea. Rack rates are a bit pricey but I have always found a deal on Orbitz for less than $90 per night. All the rooms are ocean view and I believe most if not all have full kitchens. :goodvibes

And now a warning about Compass Cove - we stayed there and used a credit card that we rarely use. The next thing we knew, someone was trying to fraudulently use it! It could have been a coincidence, but I found it rather odd. I was a little shaken about the lack of security for my card number. :scared:

I would also agree with the other posters about Huntington Beach, Cherry Grove and some of the less developed areas. I like to call Myrtle Beach "Branson, MO on the ocean"... quaint it 'aint but you won't be bored! :thumbsup2

Is that near memorial day weekend? If it is i agree with the previous posters who recommended staying clear of Myrtle beach itself. Everyone getting in their last summer hurrah on top of the Atlantic Beach bike rally makes traffic INSANE!
Staying south the Myrtle Beach would probably make for a more enjoyable (and more reasonable) vacation.
Everything is very close together, starting from Myrtle beach and heading south there's Surfside Beach, Garden City, Murrell's Inlet, Litchfield and Pawley's Island. They all have their charm and Surfside, Garden City and Murrell's Inlet are so close you don't know when you leave one and enter the other.
I live in Surfside Beach, just south of MB and I'd recommend staying here. There's plenty of hotels and there's also beach houses for rent (google them, there's a bunch - i'm not sure on how the prices compare to hotels).
As far as cheap things to do. This area seems to be the putt putt capital of the world. You can blow a half a day on that and many places have options to play all day (come and go privileges) for a reasonable price.
There's racks of coupons and discount books at most restaurants, hotels and convenience stores. Definitely grab a handful.
Someone mentioned Sam's corner and the arcade next to it. The arcade is big fun for kids. (the Sam's corner and arcade I'm talking about is in Garden City - tiny bit south of Surfside). It's huge and a fairly old school arcade with skee ball, air hockey, all kinds of video games and you can win tickets on lots of the games and trade them in for toys and, well, junk but kids love it. That Sam's and that arcade is across the street from the Garden City Pier, which also has an arcade. If you like to fish you can fish from the pier during the day. They used to have bands at night (free) but i don't know if they do that anymore.
There's a place called Maze Mania that is a maze made of wooden walls that the kids (and the adults if they want) have to find their way through. There's also an observation deck so you can watch the kids try and figure it out. Not a huge deal but not expensive.
There's a water park in Surfside. A show called Legends in Concert where you can see celebrity impersonators (not cheap but it is entertaining).
Surfside also has a pier you can fish from or just wander out on to enjoy the view. There's a restaurant on the pier called Nibil's. It's not fancy but it very reasonable and the food is very good. Eating breakfast there on the pier is wonderful.
The beaches will get less and less crowded the further south you go.
If you are from a state where fireworks are illegal (and you're comfortable doing this) you can stop at one of the fireworks stores and pick up some and shoot them off on the beach. i *think* it's still ok in Garden City.

Murrell's Inlet has amazing restaurants. Not necessarily budget friendly but amazing. Lee's inlet Kitchen has amazing seafood. Flo's is fun and funky cajun. Bovine's has great steak and wood oven pizza. Divine's has great fish and a great sushi bar. If you want a seafood buffet, The Admiral's Flagship has good food and is much better than the 'chain' type buffets.
Oh, there is a budget friendly restaurant in the inlet. Creekrats. It has indoor and outdoor seating. They often have a small band outside in the summer and dancing. Family friendly and the kids dance right with the adults.

Another vote for Brookgreen Gardens to seellovely flowers and awesome sculpture - and the state park across the street for beaches with NO crowds.

If you brave Myrtle Beach - Broadway at the Beach is great for shopping, IMAX, magicquest lots of shops and restaurants. The browsing is budget friendly - the stores and restaurants not as much. :) Similar to Broadway there's a place in North Myrtle beach called Barefoot Landing. Cute shops, House of Blues etc.

There's a cool children's museum in MB. Lots of interactive exhibits. Cheap, too.

There's many, many cool bars and clubs. The beach bars are cool, Broadway has some fun clubs.

Lots of shows, Legends in Concert, Alabama Theater, Medieval Times, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, the Carolina Opry etc. The previous poster who called it Branson on the beach was right.

As far as safety, you should be fine. If you're walking down Ocean Blvd late at night (not recommended) you'll probably encounter quite a few drunks but serious crime is pretty minimal. I'd be most careful about the traffic and accidents.

I've rambled enough. :) If there's something specific you're looking for PM me, I'd be glad to help.
