Myrtle Beach trip budget tips?

I remember The Breakers being ok. My uncle used to be head of security for The Breakers a long time ago. I don't know how often rooms are refurbished, but I would assume they would need to be quite often. The only problem I have with it is that it's along the main strip, and while The Breakers were too far up on the strip when I was a teenager, it's too close now that I'm an adult. lol

I wouldn't let Bike Week (either) deter me from going. I doubt many of them frequent the same places that families go... especially now that they've shut down The Pavillion for good. I would just not even go anywhere near where THe Pavillion once stood. I doubt you'll see many of them playing putt-putt or hanging at the waterslides. You may see a few at Broadway at the Beach, but not enough to scare ya.

Sorry to disagree but MB will be a mad house during both bike weeks....the strand, kings highway and the bypass and all roads in between will be packed with bikers and tourist who were unaware of bike weeks....I would stay away...even on regular summer days it can easily take 2 hours to get from one end of MB to the other....thats with out special events....we are only talking a few miles too....MB is not traffic friendly....

I am a dispatcher too that deals with 911 alot I am sure I have talked to her at some point

That is cool. I am sure you have talked to her. What kind of dispatching do you do? I am a 911 dispatcher in NC.

I work in system control at the local power company. We deal with 911 quite a bit. we actually have 2 or 3 former 911 dispatchers in our call center and one that left here and went back to 911

We are thinking of staying at the Landmark Resort. Could someone tell me would I be able to walk to the Family Kingdom? We usually stay at the Coral Beach resort, great time by the pool with the pool bar next to the pool, but very expensive for july 4th week. So found this resort, wanted to know stuff about it. We are on a budget this year and looking for something reasonable and fun! They say it has a poolside bar also. We love to go july 4th week, love the crowds! we like to stay in the middle of lots of hotels, not secluded anyway and in walking distance to everything. Is this a good resort?:cool1:

According to a Google search I did, it is not. One website said it was less than three miles. To me, that's not walking distance! :rotfl2:

This is my opinion and only MY opinion....

But if I were to give you advice on Myrtle Beach-- I would tell you to avoid it like the plague. Everytime we go back we vow never to return... and once we do we always are hopefully that it will be a better trip than the last-- unfortunately we are wrong.

Myrtle Beach is like going to the beach with your neighbors/friends/co-workers/friends. Ive seen people Ive known at the beach every single time ive visted (and I live in TN).

We stayed at Compass Cove our last visit in the newly renovated area. We were very excited by the looks of the outside-- but once we got inside our first room reaked so much of smoke that we could barely breathe (and we arent sensitive to smoke). So we requested another room. We then got inside and they gave us a room that they use as a 'special room' where they dont allow people to smoke (although there are no non-smoking rooms there)... and there were brown feces spots on the walls in the bedroom area. At this point we toughed it out and went about our business. It only got worse and what was suppose to be a 4 night stay turned into a 2 night stay and us returning home from our vacation early-- losing our money knowingly-- to sleep in our own clean house.

In no way am I trying to be a debbie downer here and DH and I arent spoiled, prissy, or big complainers... but our last visit last year to Myrtle Beach was horrible. We will never return there. IMO its not what it used to be... and it seems like they are tearing down every single mom and pop hotel to put up these huge towering hotels-- and yet the insides dont match the outsides whatsoever.

I found the buffetts in Myrtle Beach to be exactly what you would expect for a beach buffett.

HOwever I do recommend to you Drunken Jacks-- their food is good and the atmosphere is nice.

Again please dont flame me but I think on a budget you can go to far nicer beaches and areas than the over populated and popular Myrtle Beach.

I also do not recommend bike week whatsoever. Its very very busy, crowded, and Ive heard that during one of the bike weeks some of the businesses actually shut down.

Have a good trip-- I wish you well and hope that your trip will be much better than mine!

I personally like North Myrtle Beach. There is a new hotel there called the Avista. Very nice, very clean. Located right on the beach. They have a pool bar, activities for the kids and it is much less crowded. Still close to shopping etc. Also there is a fishing pier located nearby in Cherry Grove.

The Landmark hotel is located at approximately 15th Avenue South on Ocean Blvd. The Family Kingdom is between 3rd and 5th Avenues South on Ocean Blvd. So the Family Kingdom is about 10-12 blocks north of the Landmark. Maybe walking distance for adults and teens but probably not for small children.

The exterior of the Landmark is very nice, though I haven't been inside any of the rooms. There is a skywalk from the parking deck to the hotel crossing Ocean Boulevard.

Please let me caution you to lock your vehicle doors and not leave anything valuable inside. We routinely have vehicles broken into in that deck.

Enjoy your stay and feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Trip advisor has had some bad reviews of Landmark. We used to stay there exclusively but changed our plans this year based on those reviews. You may want to read there before you make your reservation.

Hi. We too will be there in between bike weeks (May 20-24). We have reservations at Compass Cove, but I'm wondering if we should switch to Crown Reef since it's all the way at the south end (less noise, maybe?). Plus, they are running specials too for that time. Suggestions, anyone?
Thanks!

I would probably switch if thats a real concern for you. Crown Reef is just about as soon as you get on the strand at the very south end. It will be a drive to most everything. but there is a small family go cart amusment park right nearby. Plus surfside is right there for eating if you didnt want to go into MB. I think it would give you a bit more options a will definately be quietier at that end of the beach. Plus Crown Reek is one of the prettiest Hotels at night never been inside so I cannot comment on that but a guy I work with goes to MB every year and that is where he stays.

Hi. I just got back from a week-long trip in MB. We stayed at Sheraton Broadway Plantation, adjacent to Broadway at the Beach, and about 2 blocks from the ocean. They have 1/2/3 bedroom condos and is a real nice resort with pool, pool bar, arcade, mini-golf, full kitchens, etc. I'm not sure what they cost, I traded with RCI but if you got to Sheraton or Starwood websites you might be able to do a "tour" and get a package. I've never toured with Sheraton but if they are anything like Marriott it's a piece of cake and a big money saver.

We went to the Carolina Opry to see Good Vibrations and that was fun. Had dinner at Cagney's Steak House which was very good too. Also, Key West Grill at BaB was good. First time at Senor Frogs, what a blast! Have fun.

We stayed at crown reef over the summer and were very dissapointed there. For what I paid to stay there and all the hype of how wonderful it was. We would rather stay else where. the summer before we stayed at compass cove and enjoyed it very much. i don't know about bike week though
