Thinking of going over Xmas break to get out of the cold here in Mass. a bit. Flying to FL in Feb., so we thought driving to MB would be ok in Dec.

Kids are 14 and 16...looking for nice indoor pool area.

Any suggestions would be great! We know it will be cold and a lot not open then, but just want a family getaway to relax and unwind after the holiday rush.:)

Most hotels in MB don't have indoor pools, or if they do, they are small, nothing fancy type pools. I also wouldn't count on it being overly warm in Dec., probably still warmer than Mass, but not lay on the beach and get tan warm.

My parents went to MB at the very beginning of December for just a few days. They got lucky because one of their days was about 70 degrees.

They stayed at the Sheraton Plantation Resort where they own a timeshare. It has an indoor pool but it is near Broadway at the Beach and is not ocean front. Broadway at the Beach was open for shopping and they saw some Christmas shows.

According to historical data, the average high on Christmas day is 56 degrees. If I were trying to get out of the cold, I would want something warmer.

Caribbean Beach resort is our favorite in Myrtle Beach. Its pretty new and one of the the nicer places. The "boardwalk" area of MB is a bit lame and not a lot open, but there are tons of shows and outlet malls and attractions near by and most will be open in December. Many close for January only. A lot of the shows have Christmas versions that are really good. We often choose to stay in North Myrtle. We choose the Beach Cove there.

TONS of MB hotels have indoor pools, just not the ones that are the old mom and pop places. Crown Reef (located at the southern end of MB) just put in a new indoor water park that looks pretty cool, though maybe a bit young for your 2 boys. Look also at Captains Quarters (showing its age a bit) and Landmark (also a bit old). The Hampton Inn is gorgeous and pricey. Check out Avista and the Mar Vista in North Myrtle Beach. Sea Mist and Caribbean Beach both have a good number of indoor pools. You also may want to check out the Dunes, and the Breakers resorts.

As to not a lot open, you'd be surprised. There will still be a ton of stuff going on: shows, Broadway at the Beach, Coastal Grand Mall, the outlet centers, even a good number of mini-golf places. I've actually lucked up with great weather the last few years in December. Sat out in shorts one day. The ocean water is too cold to swim in though.

Thanks everyone! Will check into all the hotels mentioned.

As I mentioned, we know it will be cold....but we just want a getaway from the holiday rush and will be flying to FL in Feb.. MB fits the bill....affordable, driving distance, warmer than New England.

Appreciate the help?:)
