Parents Do Double-Take On Supposed 'Twinn' Dolls
Some Get Poorly Done Dolls, Others Get Nothing

UPDATED: 10:07 a.m. EST January 8, 2004

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- It seems like a brilliant idea: Make a child's doll that looks just like the child who will receive it.

Christy Hebert, of Clemson, S.C., thought her 6-year-old daughter would love to have one. So she picked up a catalog from the My Twinn company in Denver.

"[You] go through and pick out the eye, hair color, skin color," Hebert said. She even picked out an outfit that closely matched one her daughter had and paid $189 for the doll.

Hebert said she was thrilled when the doll arrived two days before Christmas.

"It was one of those things that you're so relieved that it's finally here," she said.

But then she opened the box.

"It was like they had just taken a doll, put her in the box, shipped it out and said, 'OK, there's your order'," Hebert told WYFF-TV in Greenville, S.C.

She said the doll looked very little like her daughter. But in one respect, Christy Hebert is lucky. At least her doll arrived.

"[Customers] were frantic because they had ordered the My Twinn dolls and did not receive them," said Sue Farmer, of The Doll Closet in Easley, S.C.

On Dec. 19, the My Twinn company closed, saying, "Due to a shortage of working capital and a difficult economy, we've decided to suspend operations."

The Better Business Bureau said it received more that 800 complaints about the company in 2003, mainly about delivery issues and doll quality.

"I thought they had put the wrong doll in the box," Hebert said.

A family friend was able to make some cosmetic changes to the doll to make it look a bit more like Hebert's daughter, allowing Hebert to have a happy ending to the story.

Her daughter loves the doll.

There were so many problems with that company this year. I was one of the BBB complaints. Luckily we did receive our doll, but it arrived with a broken arm.
