Just found out that my mother had a stroke. She's 65. She lives in Rome so I'll be going there tomorrow night after my son's H.S. graduation ceremony. My sister also lives in Rome so my mother isn't alone, and my sister said there's numbness on the left side but not paralysis. My brother and his family live in England, so he's on his way to Rome right now and I'm relieved that she isn't alone, my parents being divorced.

There's a major blockage in the carotid artery and she's on coumadin, so it seems the doctors have to wait until the coumadin is out of her system before they can operate to remove the blockage because of the coumadin being a blood-thinner (so major risk of excessive blood loss during surgery).

If you're so inclined, please say a prayer that my mother doesn't have another (worse) stroke before the doctors can operate.

Thank you.

Oh Aisling I will keep your mother in my thoughts. I hope your travels go smoothly and that you arrive to find her on the mend from successful surgery.

I am praying for you and your family.

God be with you all & your dear Mom....please remember patients that have had strokes tend to do much better than they used to :goodvibes my neighbor had a stroke last year and to see him this year you would never think he had a medical issue at all

Prayer said. My sister had a stroke last year, at 63, and she is fine now. You would never know anything happened to her. I'm sure you Mom will be fine too. I'm sorry you have to wait so long and travel so far to see her.

A prayer said. I hope your mother recovers well.

Have a safe journey to Rome too.

I am so sorry to hear this. I will keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers.

I'll be praying.

Please let us know how things are going when you can.

Sending prayers as well. My dad has had several strokes, some while on coumadin, and two years ago he had surgery for his carotid artery on both sides.

He did amazingly well and was up and about in the hospital in no time. The techniques can so be so much less invasive now.

They may do the left and right side separately if she needs both....that's what they did with my dad. His blockage was severe and had been building so to clear both at once would have been too much of a release at once.

His second side was less severe and an even faster recovery.

Best wishes for a safe and successful surgery.
