My TiVo Experience

I have a first series TiVO that I bought in 2000 with a lifetime service contract. Still going strong 13 years later. Best investment ever.

Every time I think about upgrading, I just can't. I get what I need from my TiVO.

Can you use Tivo without cable? I have 3 TV's with antennas. Would I have to get 3 Tivo's?

I love that Series 3, it shows what programs are recording on the front, I like that. I went for the Premiere XL a few years ago, because of the 4 tuners. DH is a PITA and won't learn how a Tivo works. So if there were 2 shows recording and I was not home, he would go nuts, he insists on watching live tv! Or he would randomly cancel recordings to watch live TV. I gave up and got the Premiere. DD has my beloved Series 3 in her bedroom.

The standard Roamio can connect to an antenna and has four tuners. You could get one Roamio and two TiVo minis for the other TVs, but you would need to connect them to ONE network router.

I have been a happy Tivo customer since 2000, when they first became more affordable. Over the years we've upgraded a time or two, and currently have 1 premier and 1 Series 3.

The roamio looks very interesting.

To get all 6 tuners from cable, do you have multiple cable cards? We have 1 M card on each, which, IIRC, is for 2 tuners.

If we can get by with 1 cable card, that means we can get rid of 1 cable card and 1 Tivo, saving us about $12 per month.

My 6 tuner Roamio Plus uses only one cable card.

I just walked in to the Miami Service Center, gave them my phone number and asked for a "multi-stream cable card." Easy

Keep trying. It's a monopoly here too. I had read the forums on tivocommunity.com, so I was already prepared what to do and what to ask for. Don't stand for being charged for something you're not getting. :headache:

Oh don't worry I'll fight Cox to refund my charges once they get the stuff working. I've got my priorities lined up right now though! ;) I hate Cox!

hahahaha:lmao: my DH does the same thing...he refuses to learn how to use it.... I have the series 3 with lifetime connected to an antenna, and I LOVELOVELOVE it.:cool1: We haven't missed our old satellite/cable for even a minute! The only thing I would streamline (if I had extra $$$ to expend) is to get all my gadgets down to just one input,so I could watch OTA,Netflix,Amazon video and Hulu without switching remotes.....(I know I could do it, but I am too cheap to give up the setup I have lol)
to another pp, there are certain Tivo boxes that work with antenna you have to check the one you're buying. I also got mine off EBay,2nd hand, with the lifetime. It's already paid for itself (no more fees)....

Things are hopefully looking up for me! We got a call from Tivo! They called me because they saw a post I made in the Tivo forums about our issues with Cox. They had an engineer call and do a bunch of troubleshooting and took a bunch of info from us. They are looking into things and will be calling us back. While they investigate they are extending our 30 day trial period to 60 days to make sure they can get this working for us to be compatible with the crappy Cox cable service! :) Not often will you have a company call you asking how they can help! :) Just another reason to love Tivo!

Oh you are so, so lucky! I got my Roamio 2 weeks ago today and I am still waiting to get it working correctly thanks to the fine people at Cox Cable here in Omaha!:sad2: I would be in heaven to only have spent the small amount of time you had to spend!

Cox is so unbelievably incompetent and downright greedy! We've gone through numerous cable cards, a few technicians to the house, hours upon hours on the phone and they just can't figure out why they can't get their cable cards to work properly. I've talked with Tivo and spend a lot of time in the Tivo forums troubleshooting but the issue all lies with Cox. If I can't get it working I will have to send my beloved Tivo back. :sad1: I have been with Tivo for over 10 years and was so excited to upgrade to HD and have Netflix streaming and all this fun stuff! If only I could take Cox out of the equation or had another cable company to choose from! Such a monopoly here.

Of course Cox hasn't failed to send me a bill for my cable card use in the last 2 weeks even though they've failed to send me a cable signal through the cable card!

I had a similar issue with Charter. The guy on the phone didn't catch that I was requesting a Tivo install, so the installer brought a DVR. He tried to tell me Charter didn't install Tivo cards. I had him call, and he found out they did. So then they had to come out again--and the tried to charge for 2 installs.

Then I got a second Tivo, because despite what the installer said, my area has no "on demand." Second card got installed wrong, and a different installer came and put in a new card later. All I can figure is I'm the only Tivo user in my area. :confused3

I do love my Tivo though! It makes watching what I want so easy. I tried a cable company DVR once, and it was nothing like Tivo--it was confusing, glitchy, and the interface was too "busy."
