My thoughts on Deck 1 on the Magic

So I know there has been some chatter about Deck 1 but no one can ever find much info on it. Just wanted to say that we stayed there last week in the Med and really liked it. Did not find it an issue being on the bottom whatsoever (and in fact, the last day the boat was really pitching around and our room was much more stable than the movie theater on Deck 6). Since there's only a few staterooms down there you don't have as many people walking by your stateroom so it was quiet. Would I book it again? Absolutely! In fact, I already have!

Thanks for this! Have heard great things about Deck 2 but not much is written about Deck 1. I have a GTY OGYIMM . . . whatever . . I don't have a guaranteed cabin. Just Oceanview somewhere on the Magic. When I checked available cabins (before deciding to save $1000 and let Mickey pick) there were a lot of Deck 2 cabins and half as many Deck 1 options. A few Deck 6 and one Deck 7. I'm ALL for quiet and non rocky. Have to ask though, are the passage ways at all spooky??? I keep thinking of the hallway scene in The Shining (for both 1 and 2 where there is not much else on that Deck). Did you have a porthole? Thanks again!

Not spooky at all, looks exactly like all the other decks. We actually had 2 connecting interior rooms so no porthole. I did see my across-the-hall neighbor's room several times and they had the two small portholes and they appeared to let in plenty of light.

I have done it twice - once in an underground hotel in Austalis and once in Switzerland where my friends had these amazing shutters outside that shut out all the light and much of the noise.But in both cases I seriously overslept. Sounds like both decks are great for easy access to the Ports. Did you by any chance carry your own luggage off the ship? I have an early-ish flight upon disembarking (barely allowable) and would love to not have to search for my bag in the Raiders of the Lost Ark luggage hall. I could drag up or down a flight, maybe two, but that would be it. Not sure what deck the exit would be in NYC.

Yes, we always carry on and off our own luggage. I despise having to pack up the night before and having them move it for me! We have one carry-on per person and kids carry their own bags, works great for us! We got off the ship at 8:30 and were at the Barcelona airport by 9:05. I can imagine NYC might be a different story though traffic-wise.

I don't think I can manage dragging my luggage too many flights so maybe I WILL receive a Deck 1 or Deck 2 cabin! It's a Saturday morning that the ship gets to NYC so it shouldn't be too bad. Flight is at 12:10. It's either that or 6 to 7 hours at Laguardia. I have TSA Pre so fingers crossed. I see that there is a Walk Off offered and I have a DCL transfer.

Were you aft , mid, or forward? I should look at a deck plan, huh? Probably only cabins at one end or the other. You booked another cruise on Deck 1? Are they cheaper than Deck 2???

We were mid - 1051/1053. The Deck 1 rooms are all forward or mid, the aft section isn't accessible to guests except for the very back where you tender. Elevators still work, too, so you don't have to drag a suitcase too much! Deck 1 is slightly cheaper than Deck 2, but there is a lot on Deck 3 that can cause noise (e.g. restaurants, nightclubs, the atrium which has a lot of performers singing) as opposed to deck 2 which is just staterooms.

I loved having two connecting interior rooms on deck one. No noise issues (other than a little rumble when pulling in and out of port; my guess is was the bow/stern thrusters), nice and stable room. Only issue was that it seemed that most of the elevators would come down to deck 3 and then turn around and go back up instead of continuing down to deck 1 and 2. The elevators would only rarely continue down to deck 1 so we would usually walk up to deck 3.

I think on Deck 1 you have access to fewer elevators as the halls don't go all the way through? Our first curse was 9B on deck 2, which was absolutely great, and we're repeating that room on our 5th cruise after 3 verandah rooms (standard, family, and navigator). I would consider Deck 1 if the price savings were significant and I wasn't planning on a verandah. My concern would be the two portholes and amount of light. Good to hear that they lights good. It's hard to find quality photos that show how much light.

At the end of the day, I'll probably be a Dec 2 or higher kind of person. Verandah is my preferred choice, but DCL is one of the few lines that I'll happily opt for Ocean View for a variety of reasons.

I have heard that Deck 2 was good for empty elevators . . . but makes sense that there are fewer of them that go all the way to #1. I think I could do an inside with the magic porthole but prefer the smaller ships. The verandah is great if you are sharing with really anyone! But I mostly LOOKED at it from inside rather than sat out there to be honest. Depends on the temperature, view, wind . . . . Being a mostly solo traveler, I really have to consider the cost. Will report back on Deck 1 and the twin portholes if that is where Mickey puts me!

We love Deck 1 on the Magic. Have been on Decks 6, 8 and 1. We had inside on Deck 1 for 12 night cruise last summer and will be spending 18 nights (back to back) next summer. Lots of storage, convenient location and very quiet.

Hey @Rob1872 and @wajones2 which rooms did you stay in on Deck 1? I was wondering if you can hear people walking above you? We liked 1051/1053 because there is no one above you, but you do hear mechanical-type noises since there's some sort of pump above you. I was eyeing 1050 and 1052 across the hall (two connecting porthole rooms) but wondered if you can hear people walking above you on deck 2? Can't decide which is worse, footsteps or mechanical noise, ha!

We were on deck 2 originally for our EBPC in 2013 on the Wonder. HATED it!!!!! We were just below the bar at one of the adult clubs. After they shut down all we heard for an hour was dragging crates and dropping boxes while restocking. We moved down to deck 1 and it was AWESOME!!! Quieter and cooler. The Panama Canal passage view was really cool from the two small portholes. Literally inches from the side of the locks. Minimal ship noise or movement. Would recommend deck 1 anytime. Cost savings too.

I'm pretty bad with noise . . . bass really gets to me, from a car stereo of a band? IF I luck out with a noisy room on my "Let Mickey pick" I'm going to see about downgrading to anyplace quiet. Sleep is important. Long cruise. Need my rest. I can deal with it if I know it has an ending time (like a show that ends at 10pm) but . . . . I might be OK with a repetitive churning noise. Guess I'll find out!

Thanks for this! We booked an Large Porthole Oceanview on Deck 2 for our cruise on the Magic year and I was worried being down that low. I didn't even realize there were Oceanviews on decks 1 & 2. We've only sailed on other lines and I believe they only have inside cabins on those decks.
