Shall I risk it? will they turn me away or fine me for excess baggage ? if so, how much?
thanks for any info.

My suitcase was over the size limit last year and it was fine, nothing was said about it. The only thing you need to watch is the weight, the size will be fine.

As Jen says it will probably be okay. The airlines have always had guidelines but I have never seen any suitcases being measured only weighed. Up to now, I have never seen hand luggage measured or weighed either. We always adhere to the guidelines and have always found it a bit annoying when people take huge hand luggage with them.

Going back to your question though, I tend to worry so I would have cases that were right but then that is just me.:)

Our holdall is oversized, too wide, and the only thing we have to do is take it to the oversize bag drop instead of it going past the check in agent. The other advantage is that it's too wide to get weighed at the desk as well and the guy at over size couldn't care less what it weighs.:thumbsup2

You could get away with it hmmmmmmmmmmm I always think it depends on the check in agent! Smile alot
Good luck

May I just check that I'm not being a numpty.......My interpretation of the resriction is that the 158cm limit is the sum of the width + length + depth. I that correct?

Yes, the total dimensions are the length, bredth and width all added together.

We flew with VA from Gatwick last month but to Vegas not FLorida. We did twilight checkin so with people going to Florida.

Didn't see any cases being measured just weighed.

Watch your hand luggage too.
Our hand luggage was weighed two years ago and my ds 10 had to remove his jumper and tie it round his waist so that his bag was not over 5kg. It was very silly, when just by removing the jumper until we had checked in his bag was then just under 5kg.

yes. we have hand hand luggage weighted inthe past, it was then I found out my son had brought lots of books as reading mateiral, I hadn't checkled his hand luggage and was about 5 kg over the limit, we had to start each carrying some of his books, his brother and sister were not pleased!

Think you should be ok! Ive not seen any be measured! Although i saw a lot of hand luggage being measured in Dec.
