We went to the Nick Hotel for 7 days (June 17-24) and here are some of my comments, hoping that it will help some of you with a decision to go/avoid this hotel. I would like to begin by saying that we had a great stay, our children (10, 8, 4) consider this the best hotel in the world.

I would rate this hotel as a 4.0, but borrowing a grading system from the Unofficial Guide, I think it would be more helpful to see it this way:

Appeal by Group Age

Pre-School: 5.0
Grade School: 5.0
Teens: 4.5
Young Adults: 4.0
Over 30: 3.5
Seniors: 2.5

If you answer (honestly) the question of "Who's Vacation is this for?" with "My Children" or your hotel decision would be made to appeal your children, I honestly believe you this hotel is a "can't miss". If your answer is "The Parks for my Kids, but the hotel and restaurants for the adults" I think you might find things to complain about the hotel.

We stayed in a fifth floor, two-bedroom suite, on Building No. 7, right by the Lagoon Swimming Pool (the main one). Our plan was to go to six parks in six complete days, so the hotel was for sleeping and swimming, either as a mid day break or end of the day relax. We didn't plan to stay a complete day at the hotel or something of that sort.

Here are my comments by topic:

Need Improvement

Elevators: slowest I can remember. If your average wait for an elevator is 45 seconds to a minute, here you will be waiting from 1 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes on average. Wild guess, but might be right. We stayed on the fifth floor and my kids would like to "race the elevator" either up or down, and won 4 of every 5 races. I don´t know if they have one elevator per building, or one every two buildings. But I think it was more a matter of the elevator technology. Slow.

Clean Up time: I would say that our room was made around 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Two of the seven days it was inconvenient, with the other days us being out of the hotel. One interfered with a nap, asked the lady to come back after making the neighbors rooms. The other was a minor inconvenience, with us waiting some three minutes for the lady to finish up.

Maintenance: I had three issues. 1) A clogged bathroom. It was really not clogged but "slow". It was quickly fixed, once reported. 2) Missing batteries on one of the three TV remote controls. I think it might be the last guest fault, but it was also quickly resolved. 3) A couple of light bulbs going out; they were fine when we got there, but faulted. They were replaced.

Above Average

Parking: I read reviews of parking problems. I think the hotel layout is very good and you can park near your building/room. Sometimes you were little off (some 200 feet) and sometimes near.

Room: It wasn't a large room; you might even think it is a small suite. Very clean. It is stated to be 485 sq. ft., almost twice of a regular "Disney Value Resort". You don't feel is quite large. We were a party of five and it was oK. If we were six, I might be a bit concerned. It worked for us pretty well. The Kitchenette was small, so was the fridge, but it did the job. If you look at the 360° view of the rooms available in the www.nickhotel.com, it is pretty much spot on. I doesn't appear to be very large, so there's no deception there. It is what it is.

The Mall: I would say the food is average, but the mall is nice. We found some characters (Blue, Diego, Squidward), but we didn't spend that much time in the hotel or mall. Subway was a little overpriced (6.50 for a footlong instead of 5.00) but felt that the Pizza Hut was more overpriced (13.99 for a medium cheese pan pizza, 9.99 a dozen wings). We bought a couple of souvenir cups (7.00 USD I think) with free refills throughout our stay. We didn't used them much.

Excellent

Front Desk: quick check-in (Wednesday, keep in mind), quick check out, very helpful. Asked for a late check out and was granted 2 extra hours.

Swimming Pool: The highlight of the hotel. First time I felt that the actual installations were better than pictures in brochures and websites (and I saw a lot of them). A lot of lifeguards. Slides were very good. Our children had a blast every time. Slime was overrated in my opinion, but my children loved it and still talk about it. Movies at night (twice) in a big screen. I loved the cabanas (TV, fridge, fan, etc), but I didn't rented one or even knew what their cost was.

Location: Three quarters of a mile from Interstate 4, one mile from WDW entrance, five minute drive to Downtown Disney, Epcot or Disney Hollywood Studios. I think it is closer to this parks than some Disney hotels. Easy access to the Airport or the restaurants or stores in Kissimmee's 192; near a Walmart, Super Target and Publix. Some two miles from the Premium Outlets. Easy access to the airport. Great, great location. Theres nothing in walking distance, though (not that I wanted to walk any more).

No Opinion (didn't use them)

Character Breakfast or Dinner
Sit Down restaurants
4D Movies
Complementary Shuttles to Parks

We ended up with 0.00 in extras, other than food. In fact, is the first time that the front desk didn't ask for my credit card for incidentals. They said "you can pay as you go". I really didn't pay much. We were handed a daily plan of activities called The Script where all the free and charged activities were listed. It was similar to the ones you receive at cruises.

Summary

As I stated before, if you are looking to decide the hotel based on what your children will enjoy the most, I think this hotel is a can't miss. However, I noticed that the pricing strategy for this hotel varies significantly. If you end up paying between 100 and 140 USD/night, including resort fee, I think this is an excellent hotel. If you end up closer to 200 USD/night, you might feel it is not worth it, unless you go for short stays. I wouldn't pay that much for a complete week. Then again, it was named by my children as The Best Hotel in the World. What's the price of that?

we went the 1st week in June thanks to the great fla resident rate. I think our review was about the same. we didnt eat in the food court except for one night for a pizza that I picked up. The Fla resident coupon book really saved us money so that was added plus. We did splurge for a cabana one day and it was well worth the money. we used it from 9a-9pm- brought our own food, watched movies, hung out for awhile and they kept it stocked with water all day.

Excellent and objective review.

I'd agree with pretty much all that you said. We've stayed there 3x I think - 2x in its "Nick" incarnation, and once prior when it was just Holiday Inn Family Suites. I thought it was a much better value when it was a Holiday Inn (less than 1/2 the price between our stay then and the next time when it was the Nick hotel).

But the kids do love it!

Great review!
My family briefly thought about going here on time, but passed.. Maybe we'll try this again.

Thanks for the nice review - we (me, DH and twin 7 year old daughters) are going here in late August before heading to a Disney hotel

How much was the Cabana? Are there some by each of the pools? Someone said they keep it stocked with water, is that it? Any other types of drinks or any snacks?
TIA

we paid $150 plus tax for our stay. They told me the summer rates started that day. darn.. anyhow, they did keep it stocked with water all day and brought us ice as needed. The frig was large enough to stock our food and beverages that I brought down for lunch. It worked out nice for us since the kids would go and slide, swim and come over to take breaks in the shade. ds watched a movie in the afternoon. we came back down after dinner so the kids could get some more slide/pool time. Ours was pretty much in the middle of all of them and they face the pool and the slide area and are a short walk for both. Service was good. You can order food/drinks from them I think we had a server until 5pm or so.

They have the cabanas at both pools.
Here are some photos of the discussed cabanas.

thats them alright.

they were nice for the price. I have paid $150 for a half day at the hard rock here in south fla for a cabana rental.

I'm in a room at the Nick hotel right now. DS10 had a great time playing in the pool yesterday and we'll head back out shortly.

We all enjoyed the 30-minute family game show last night. The one complaint I have regarding making reservations to attend the game show is the lack of operators to answer phone calls. The "Script" they give you has an extension to call for reservations, but after two separate 5+ minutes calls on hold without talking to anyone, I gave up and walked over to Guest Relations in the Mall to reserve.

When I originally checked back in late on May on pricing a one-night stay here this week all the prices were around $250 plus tax and resort fee (would have been about $300). Sunday I checked some websites and got a quote of $109 plus tax and resort fee (ended up a few cents over $150) for a two-bedroom suite. At check-in (1:30ish) we were offered a Rugrats or Rugrats All Grown Up room or could have a SpongeBob room for an additional $25 (before tax, which they failed to mention!). Of course, DS wanted the SpongeBob room. For this $25 we ended up with a large cutout on the wall in the living room area of Patrick and a wall-sized mural of SpongeBob in the kids room. DS was happy with it, but DH and I thought there could have at least been related sheets or comforters, characters on the privacy curtain(there isn't a door on the kids room, just a curtain), or a few more touches in the actual room.

The room itself has obviously seen some wear and could stand a renovation--there are visibly worn areas on the loungechair and sofa in the living room and the king size bed in our room was very worn/slanted on the side I was sleeping on. It felt like I could roll out at any minute.

The Mall food court was very clean and reasonably priced. DH just paid $6 for a ft. long turkey sub at the Subway near Windsor Palms last week, so $.50 more at a hotel certainly wasn't bad. We got subs and a personal pan pizza last night--everything was fresh and pretty tasty.

Overall, we're happy with our decision to come here for a night and thought it was a good value at the $150 since one-day tickets to a Disney water park would be around $120 and we can use the facilities the day of check-in and check-out.

Hi there,

Can you please tell me what web site you used to get the quote of $109.

Thanks

Check Travelocity periodically as they run special every so often for the have rooms at Nick for $79 plus tax and resort fee. A couple of days ago, Travelocity had the rooms for a rate of $79.

Great honest review!

Tirapapas - enjoyed your review. Very informative. Also AStamm thanks for the input. We're staying for 2 nights in August and just doing the hotel - no parks for 2 days. I figure between the pools and game room that'll be plenty to occupy our 5 year old! Can't wait. Thanks again.:thumbsup2

Sorry it's taken so long to respond--I'm picking up free Wi-Fi from somewhere in the Windsor Palms area and it's spotty, at best.

I booked through Expedia--pretty sure they had the 1-bedroom rooms for $79 and the 2-bedroom that we got for the extra $30.

I'd definitely recommend using this hotel as a destination in itself as the pool/slides are enough to keep the kiddos busy all day.

We got the Travelzoo special of $89 for a 2 bedroom (of course don't forget the resort fee!), so that will make for a nice break before Disney. Can't wait, we're looking forward to spending time at the hotel. We're doing that instead of a waterpark this time. :yay:

We went to the Nick Hotel in late March. I had a wonderful time. Stuck to the Pizza Hut/Subway though. I heard the restaurant food was horrible. Thanks for your review!

We went for 2 nights in November and really enjoyed it - will likely do it again at some point. We paid $99 with no resort fee and got upgraded to the 2 bedroom (because the 2nd pool was completely closed and I was never notified - but this ended up being no big deal). Agree that the 2BR is way over-hyped and it would be VERY TIGHT with 6 people in there.

My best advice would be to bring a large-ish, rolling cooler with you. We hit publix the first night and didn't leave the grounds for 2 days! It was great - filled the cooler with drinks, frozen waters, sandwiches, fruit and treats and just brought that down to the poolside with us every day. Also - if someone doesn't want to shell out $ for the cabana - I didn't think it was necessary - there is plenty of shade to be found (depending where the sun is - one side is always shaded by buildings) and with my rolling cooler - it was great. We also got dinners at Publix - fried chicken bucket and microwave mac n cheese - not gourmet but if you're looking to save some cash...
