My State Food is Better Than Yours

I am from NJ. I think we have the best pizza, Italian food and Taylor Ham sandwiches.

Originally from Chicago, I would have to say our famous PIZZA.

Now transplanted to NJ, I would have to say Pork Roll, Egg and cheese on a hard roll! :thumbsup2

Rocky mountain oysters. Yeah that would be one of my states food and I would have to say everything could beat it however I do love St. Louis Style Pizza can't beat it also Fried Ravioli was first made in St. Louis "the hill" area.

Another poster from Michigan and I have to agree with the nominations of pasties and pie. Specifically, cherry pie made from Traverse City-area tart cherries. Good golly! That's good stuff.

Also, considering that we're practically surrounded by water, you've got to love our freshwater fish. Mmm, whitefish and walleye!

And as someone from the Eastern side of the state, I have to put in a plug for Coney Island hot dogs. I know all you New Yorkers are raising an eyebrow over that one, but coneys are a Michigan tradition.

Fish fry, fresh & fried cheese curds, brats! Had to edit to add the best one yet---frozen custard!!! :cool1:

I second that! Ummm... fried chicken, mashed 'taters, good 'ol garden green beans, and cornbread. What could be better....oh, dont forget the sweet tea!

I'm from KY - so what else could it be other than............Fried Chicken! And I'd probably have to add Derby Pie!

Let's see, some Texas foods;
Frito's-originated in Texas
tamales-not those slimy canned things
chicken fried steak
Tex-mex foods
BBQ
chili
corny dogs-Fletcher's at the state fair
Hamburgers-originated in Athens, Tx
and let's talk about steaks. Sorry KC, Mo, I had a strip steak in KC this past weekend and it did not touch the steak I had at Perinni's in Buffalo Gap or Ranchman's Steakhouse in Ponder. The steak at KC was very good, just not fantastic.
And, Texas gave the world the frozen margaritas developed by Matt Martinez.

NJ/NY here (15 mins. from Manhattan) and I have to say I've never found better pizza, hot pretzels, rye bread, bagels or Italian bread! Something about the water, or air, or something just makes the breads around here the best! Where else is it so good that a hard roll with butter can be a gourmet breakfast?
.

I agree, it is in the water. The bread/pizza/bagels are the best. There are some wonderful bakeries in the Bronx and the farmers market there has delicious Italian delicacies.

I have to agree with the previous poster from Missouri re: barbecue pork steaks, ice cream cone and toasted ravioli. But, I'm not sure anyone knows about St.Paul sandwiches from chinese takeout. A St. Paul sandwich is an egg foo yung patty with mayo, tomato, lettuce and onion on bread. Many of my relatives when the visit always want a St. Paul Sandwich because they can't get them from anywhere else! :thumbsup2

YUP dh scolded :furious: me for not addingthe St.Paul sandwich, to the list of stuff from Missouri

forgive me.. Im old "army brat" so I guess you can say Im from..everywhere :teeth: and yes they should have food from around the states at Epcot. that would be fun

Trish

I would have to say that our fried chicken and sweet tea could give you a run for your money!
:smooth:

Denino's pizza on Staten Island is the best!

As a Staten Islander, I must agree!!

I believe we have the highest Italian population in the US (my last name ends in a vowel, too :goodvibes ) so the Italian food cannot be beat!! Fried calamari, cannolis, you name it, we have it!!

And Jewish deli - pastrami on rye with mustard, hotdogs with mustard and sauerkraut, knishes, half-sour pickles, egg creams - YUM!!!!

Bagels, of course! I always bring them to friends who have moved out of town - the smell in the plane drives fellow travellers wild :rotfl2:

Ethnic foods of all types, of course!! And don't forget the street vendors - there is nothing like chestnuts roasting on an open fire - from a street vendor, with the snow falling, seeing the tree at Rockefeller Center!

Now I'm hungry...:badpc:

I can not belive anyone from Pittsburgh has not posted yet.

Disney certainly does not have these:

Decent pierogies anywhere on site....

When you order a grilled chicken or steak salad in Pittsburgh it comes with French fries on the salad....

And lastly, one word Primanti's!!!! Where any sandwich you order comes with tomatoes, cole slaw and french fries ON the sandwich.. Hey Disney I am sure Primanti's would love to open a franchise location on property.......

Primanti's is the best! When we are traveling, my dh always puts his fries & cole slaw on his sandwich and you can not believe the strange looks he gets.

We take all your favorites and serve them NV style, BUFFET.

I'm sorry if I am repeating because I didn't have a chance to read all the threads, but I'm from Westchester County, New York 15 miles north of NYC and hands down some of the best food in the world. Pizza, bagels, Chinese, ITALIAN (I should know, we're Italian and take our food very seriously.) I know Maine and Boston have great seafood, been there and ate there, too! The south has great food, too most of my family has moved there. But New York City has the best International Sampling- Indian food, French, German, Chinese you name it, it's here- very authentic. I love it! If you've ever come to NYC you must visit the littlest, off the beaten path restaurants- they're usually the cheapest and the best! :woohoo:

Best Italian anywhere....Augies Restaurant in Larchmont! A hole in the wall...with the best penne ala vodka ever!

Mississippi= Fried Catfish, Fried Chicken, Fried Okra, Fried Corn, and Fried Green Tomatoes

You took the words right out of my mouth, but I'll have to add Schooner Fries and Whole Fried Flounder (among many other gulf seafood specialties).

Also, I'm not from Louisiana, but grew up going to New Orleans and eating many of the Louisiana delicious dishes. What about Turtle Soup and Bananas Foster!!!!!!!! YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indiana checking in here. We have corn. Yep. Corn.

And I suppose a huge tenderloin or two.

That's it. Corn and tenderloins.

I've lived in a few places and eaten well in every one:

Ohio-
The Ohio Buckeye Candy!- A creamy peanuty center dipped in chocolate! Yum!

Maryland-
I'll skip the crabcakes (not that they aren't the best) and just take on the chocolate Berger's Bakery cookies and Boardwalk Fries with vinegar and Old Bay seasoning!

NYC-
I have to agree on the Italian anything (think Arthur Avenue in the Bronx).
NY Cheesecake (plain..no fruit- Junior's in Brooklyn has the best anywhere)
NY Pizza (anything one can fold and eat- How about Famous Rays...or is it Original Rays? ...or Famous, Original Rays....Hm...the choices, the choices).
Matzah Ball Soup at Artie's Deli on the Upper West Side

There's my two cents- now I'm hungry!

It seems to be a constant quest to find a real fried clam outside New England. They have them at a place near me but they aren't very good and they charge 'Market Price" for them. You know what that means. $$$$$
I don't mind spending the money but I'd at least like them to be good.
