My son was selected

The mediterranian school district is making a brochure promoting reading and my son was one of three selected from our school to be photographed for the brochure. The principal took the three students to some historical spots in town and photographed each of them reading in front of them. I am very excited for DS, especially since his reading has really excelled since the beginning of first grade.

I asked DS what the best part of the day was and he replied, "when the principal took us all for ice cream." I suppose I shouldn't expect any thing less from a six year old. lol

I'm sure there will be a few of those put away in the house for safekeeping and future reference!

Congrats! Is this school part of the DoDDS school system? I attended a DoDDS school when we were stationed in Italy (Naples American High School).

Did you ask him what flavor gelato he had?

Yes Becka, it is part of DoDDS. What year were you in Naples? I lived there from 1992-1999, actually 1995-1999 was in Gaeta, but we were in Naples often.

And no, I didn't ask what flavor gelato, DS only eats chocolate!

I lived in Naples from January 1987 - December 1989. My Dad was the 1st Sgt. of the U.S. Army Element at the NATO base.

I last heard that they got rid of the old NAHS "Horseshoe High" and moved to another facility. I was surprised they moved it away from the NSA. Do you know if they moved it out to the Pinetamare area near the elementary school? We actually lived out in the Pinetamare towers while we were there so we were close to the elementary school but quite a distance from NSA and the high school. We had to take the Tang and then make our way through Sqeeze Alley just to get to school every morning.

You would be surprised with the changes, I know we were. The Pinetamare towers were returned to the Italian government, thankfully, they were a real hazard. The elementary school and HS have moved to the new support site in Gricignano, this is where most all the housing is (all brand new and very nice, AC, dishwashers, the whole nine yards, see http://www.nsa.naples.navy.mil/housing/images/Hsg3.jpg), also there is a new Navy lodge, TGIFriday's, movie theater, shoppette etc. They will be moving the hospital, commissary and exchange out there in the future. The squeeze now has a concrete barrier down the middle, but it is still as congested. Capo has been built up as well and is a lot nicer than when we were there. Carney Park just had a renovation to the tune of several million dollars and it looks fabulous. Definitely a better place to be stationed than what it was 10 years ago.

WOW! Sounds like they have done a great job to make the place more appealing to the families stationed there.

I agree that it is a good thing the towers were given back to the Italian government. I never liked living there and I am glad to hear they finally built quarters for people to live in. I was always glad that we lived on the 1st floor so we didn't have to use the elevators. Those things scared the heck out of me because the power was always going off and you had to just wait it out. I disliked visiting my friends who would live on the upper floors. Nothing like being stuck between the 11th and 12th floors for 30 minutes.

I am also glad that they have done some work to Carney Park. It was a pretty nice place when I was there but there was always work to be done. It was like a nice slice of Americana in the middle of Italy. I spent many, many, many summer days out there. The only times I was not allowed to be out there by myself was when the fleet was in! For some reason out parents' felt that teenage girls didn't belong out there then.
