My son got in trouble for bringing a weapon to school

Yes, my (7 year old) son got in trouble today (we received an email from the school counselor) because he brought a weapon into school. His weapon of choice? The very dangerous Harry Potter wand that he brought in for show and tell.

Did he hit someone with it? Point it menacingly at another student and cast a spell? No, he left it in the box, but opened the lid (with permission from a different teacher) and it was confiscated and he was written up for bringing a weapon to school.

I swear this is as bad as the little lego gun.

School Admin gone Amuck IMHO, it is OUT of control, all this political correctness serves NO purpose. I say, Don't stand for it.... a personal record/note in your childs file for a Harry Potter Show and Tell ...and approved by a teacher? Goodness whats next?????

This is why my husband (a school administrator) thinks zero tolerance rules are awful!! If you have any concerns about the policy you should go to the board because that is who is setting those rules. The administrators are stuck in the middle of enforcing crazy rules like that.

What a shame. My son brought his toy screw driver to school for show and tell. I guess we're lucky he didn't get in trouble for that one. I never even thought that might not be ok.

Maybe they need to start making a list of "approved" show and tell items like they do for school snacks.

My kids go to a private school and I am a cub scout leader there. We meet right after school and were working on our craftsman badge at our last meeting. Our principal gave us permission for the boys to bring hammers to school as long as they kept them in their bookbags! I was a little surprised, but they all followed the rules and there weren't any problems.

I am not even sure that this meets the scrutiny of a zero tolerance rule. How is a "wand" considered to be a weapon? Would a fairy godmother type wand be banned?

Are rings banned? Remember the rings of power in the Tolkien books? They were used as weapons, too. Need to write up all of the teachers wearing rings.

Seriously, this isn't the result of a zero tolerance policy. This is pure idiocy...

I haven't responded to the email. I thought I'd wait a bit.

I just think it's crazy. I'm a para in a different elementary school and I can't imagine anybody would say a word about it there.

I gave him permission to take it. I cautioned him that it might get broken as he was passing it around and I reminded him to not try and play with it when he wasn't supposed to, etc. I never DREAMED they'd consider it a weapon. I mean, I thought we were all clear that spells and wands really can't harm people.
