My son got hit on his bike *Update post 37*

Oh goodness! I was just reading this and then saw your update. Praying for him and for you. Glad your sister could be there with him. I can't imagine getting that phone call, much less twice!

Small update;
They did an xray on his neck. Until the y know the results of that they are waiting on the other tests so they know how to proceed. We know he'll be having a CT scan of his head and an xray of his shoulder and femur. He's really hurting.
The police cam and took a report and are going to try to track the guy down.
So happy my sister is there with him

Ironically, this is the second child of mine to be hit by a pickup truck. When my oldest son was 16 he was hit while riding his bike. Broke both legs and was in the hospital for 13 days.

Glad your Sis is with him. Also - when you have a history with your other son getting hit - it makes you more than anxious! (rightfully so!)

Even when they're all grown up, it's hard to not be there with them.

While I most certainly could be wrong, I am not reading the OP as it being a hit and run. It sounds to me like the driver stopped and the son spoke with him a bit (thus the incidental information) but that at THAT time her son felt okay and did not think he was injured or would need to exchange information. So the driver then left--after talking to the biker.

I would like to think that if I were the driver in such a circumstance that i would think about the possibility of the boy have complications later and at the very least give him my name and number and more than likely call for an ambulance right then and there (for both parties protection--the biker physically and the driver legally in case other injuries get blamed on it down the road--OP NOT saying your son would do any such think AT ALL). However, I know how shaken up I was by one tiny fender bender in a parking lot once so I can imagine not thinking so clearly after hitting a bicyclist.

Gracious, it sounds like they are really checking a lot of things out. I'm glad they are not leaving any stones unturned.

No it is not just you--as I said I would like to think if I were the driver I would have insisted on making sure properly trained medical people checked him out and he was really okay--BUT I can also imagine being too rattled to think of it in the moment if the person was standing there talking to me and looking fine and insisting they were okay. Either way (being sure to trade info or not) if the driver stopped and spoke with the young man and did not leave until assured he was fine then this is not a hit and run (though, again, I may be reading the OP wrong).
Is it a motorcylce? I couldn't tell form the use of bike as that can go either way. Being that there is no helmet law in NH it IS a good thing OPs son is smart and had his helmet on (oh, and OP once your son is recovered just remind him he has to replace the helmet now--which the other driver ought to pay for I think).

Morning. Sorry I didn't update last night but it was after 2 by the time everything was done.

He checked out ok but he's real banged up. He can hardly move his shoulder and has a sling on. His head CT was allright and he has a follow up in a week. When he called me last night, or should I say this morning, he was in a lot of pain and had actually thrown up. The gave him motrin and percocets for the pain. I haven't heard from him yet this morning. He;s definitely going to be hurting for a while.

My sister was a godsend. I am so thankful she went to stay with him through all this. Chris told me many times how glad he was she was with him. She must be totally exhausted this morning for work. After he was released she brought him home and then went back to fill the script for him.
I plan to send her some flowers today and then send her a gift certificate for a restaurant up there. I don't know what I would have done without her.

As for the accident, he was on a bicycle. That's his 'car'. For those who know the area, he was was in Manchester.
He was taking a right hand turn and the truck was taking a left and hit him. The driver stopped and asked him if he was ok and all that. At the time Chris said he was ok. There was a couple that was jogging and they stopped too and asked if he wanted an ambulance and he said no. He just wasn't thinking straight. the driver ended up giving him a ride home and get this, he said to him "it;s the least I can do since I creamed you.". yes, that quote went in the police report. The hospital called the police and they came out and took a report.

The cop told him that the police should have been called as there was injuries involved. The driver, if found, will be charged with a crime. The thing that is so odd is this guy is training to be a firefighter!! Don't you think he would have known to call the police or at least an ambulance. So odd. But the police should be able to track him down based on the info my son gave him. Plus my sister, the one that was with him, just happens to work for the town he was from. She knows most of the firefighters there so she's going to ask around. She's the tax collector.

Things are going to be tough for him because Chris is not the type to do nothing. he's a very active kid. I know he's bumming because he just got a job as a dance instructor and there is no way he'll be able to do that for a while. he couldn't even bring his leg up to put a sock on, plus he's in a sling. He goes to school for deaf studies and he said he tried to sign yesterday but couldn't because of his shoulder. This is going to impact him hard for a couple weeks.

Thanks to everyone for all the warm thoughts. I tell ya, my life has been a mess lately.

It sounds to me that, at the time of the accident, it was not believed that any injuries were involved. Your son said he was ok. The driver of the truck may have suggested calling the police and/or an ambulance and your son may have refused.

I just think it's a little premature to say the guy should be charged with a crime.

another one who doesn't think the driver should be charged with a crime. You can offer to call for help all you want but if a grown adult refuses it, not much you can do about it.
OP - hoping your son feels better soon, sounds like he's going to be sore for a while.

I agree it sounds like the driver of the truck did tried to do everything he could for your son. Your son said he was fine.
