My son got hit on his bike *Update post 37*

This may not be up to OP's son. The driver left the scene of an accident involving injuries. It may be completely up to the police/state/powers-that-be at this point.

I can understand why people feel "well, he asked if the guy was ok so that covers his rear" but you can believe that if I caused an accident in which I thought someone was hurt, the police would be called to CMA!!!

::yes::

I think sometimes they take into account the other party. I mean the guy didnt just run off, he did stop.

Not only did he stop, but he drove the OP's son home! He sounds like a good guy who simply wasn't thinking straight.

OP I'll be keeping your son in my thoughts. I'm glad he's going to be OK. I live in Manchester, may I ask where he was riding when this happened? I'm glad your sister is here to help your ds out.

I am glad that the guy stopped and drove him home. I think it I were the driver, like many other pp's, I would have called the cops at the scene, and maybe ask the joggers to stick around for witnesses, just in case.

Corner of Bremer and Rimmon, heading East.

Bummer. I was hoping you lived in that area and might have known the joggers if I described then to you.

Nope, I live on the total opposite side of Manchester, down near the airport. I'm more in the "suburban" Manchester, that's more of the "city" Manchester. But the Catholic Medical Center is there and I bet a lot of people run at the same time every day (like on lunch breaks) so I bet your ds has a good shot at seeing them again!

That's what I told him. He said he may go down to the corner and hang out and see if they come by. He went to CMC for treatment.

I completely agree with this. Yes, this does sound like a true accident and sometimes your head gets all muddled with the "OMG I can't believe that just happened!" The fact that the driver DID stop and helped is a fantastic thing but you're still supposed to call the police.

Thank goodness that OP's son seems to have injuries that he will fully recover from but think back to Liam Neeson's (sp?) wife - she had a skiiing accident that resulted in a brain bleed and was dead in such a short timeframe. Feeling and appearing to be ok right after an accident does not mean that you are ok. You really need to be checked over by a medic.

so sorry to hear about this. Hopefully he is okay and heals quickly (they do at that age!).

I think it is a bit harsh to jump straight to, "he should be charged with a crime". Sounds like the truck driver tried to do the right thing, stopped and gave him a ride home. If he didn't want to take responsibility, he would have driven away and not come back.

You said this bike is your son's car. Doesn't he have some responsibility to call the police also ?

Be careful what you wish for...
- did the truck driver have a green arrow at a light? (if so, he would have had right of way and your son could get a ticket).
- did your son come to a complete and full stop at the stop sign ? (I see bikers frequently cruise through stop signs because they don't want to lose momentum).

Sometimes an accident is just that - an accident. Hopefully he has insurance for his bike and his health.

Considering he just flew over the hood of a truck and hit his head, he wasn't thinking clearly. he did make a police report while at the hospital.

I am not the one that said he should be charged with a crime. the police said that.

My son had the right of way. I am not 'wishing' for anything.

MTE. If the OP's son's Cat scan checked out ok, and she said it did, there were no brain injuries or impairments. IMO, a 23 year old should have known to call the cops. Sure he was shook up but I'm sure the guy that hit him was shook up too.

I'm not trying to argue for the sake of it but just pointing out that if it were me and I just hit somebody,I probably wouldn't be thinking clearly either!

I don't think it sounds like the driver was trying to get away with anything, just not thinking clearly at the right time. As a PP pointed out, cyclists are like cars so it very well could be that he is not in the right even tho he is the one hurt. You say he had the right of way so at least that's another thing in his favor to get his med bills covered as well as the bike.

The police aren't the ones stalking this guy... Asking witnesses for a license plate, casing the same intersection, asking other firefighters, etc.

Put yourself in his place...."I accidentally hit a kid. I was shaken up and tried to do the right thing. I stopped, he said he was ok... I drove him home. He now is stalking me and called the cops. He hung around that intersection looking for me, he asked other people at my employment, he tried to find witnesses and get my plate number. I'm afraid what he's going to do now."

Based on the fact that he stopped and took responsibility I don't hunk he is evilly cackling his way home. I could be wrong but based on his actions that's my impression.

Stalking? Are you freaking kidding me? He is trying to find the guy that hit him so he can get his insurance information.

Just when I thought I've seen it all on the Dis.

Wait, did I miss something .. your DS did not get any of the drivers info when the driver dropped him off at home?
Was it because the driver and your son "talked" and it was decided your son was fine and everyone (driver and your son) just left it at that ... hmm.
Well (back to Judge Judy and People's Court) always, people, always call the Police and have Police come to the scene.
