My son got hit on his bike *Update post 37*

OP: I'm very sorry for your son's accident and I'm thankful that he's going to be alright and I hope that he heals soon.

As for the driver of the truck: it sounds like he's a decent guy that had an honest accident. I hope they find him and get his info to cover your son's med bills. Since he sounds to be a decent guy I'm going to go with this: He was probably pretty shaken himself that day and not thinking clearly as well. When your son advised him that he was alright, he simply didn't think about calling the police/ exchanging info (since it wasn't two auto vehicles in an accident). When I was in high school I was on the tennis team. One day during practice we were doing drills and I was working on my backhand. A girl walked up behind me just as I swung. My tennis racket hit her in the nose and broke it. She had to be taken to the hospital. I was so shaken up that I was almost sick - I had to sit out the rest of practice (and I found out later her mother wanted to sue me - I was sixteen and she walked up behind me!). All I'm saying is, I'd be a basket case if I accidently hit a cyclist and I know I wouldn't be thinking clearly or logically myself - even though I'm not the one suffering physical injuries. As I stated above: the driver of the truck sounded to be a decent guy. He stopped and offered the OP's son a ride home. I'm sure that he has no problem handing over his insurance info and I'm going to assume that he simply didn't think to on the day of the accident b/c he was shaken as well and the OP's son informed him that he was fine. I'm going to hope that the police find him for insurance purposes but don't try to press charges against him b/c it sounds like he tried to do the right thing.

Excellent post. That is all anyone has been trying to say. I don't understand why surfgirl is being attacked, it is just wrong.

Um, how about when she accused the OP's son of stalking? Trying to locate the people who might be able to help him is hardly stalking.

Did you read the ENTIRE thread? I admitted that was a poor choice of words. Or did you choose to ignore that?

He isn't trying to find the driver for help. He already got that.

I realize I am bumping an older thread but when this happened I was on a cruise. I did want to find out from the OP how her son is doing and if he is back to teaching dance again.

I also wanted to post my experience with this subject. I hit two pedestrians in 2002. They walked in front of my car at dusk wearing dark colors (I actually thought they were deer at first), they came up on the hood of my car, smashed the windshield in at my sister and I and when I slammed on my breaks, I watched them roll off my car like two rag dolls. I immediately threw my car into park, ran across the street and banged on the emergency door of a restaurant. From there the next hour or two (it may have been longer) are a complete blur.

I know the police were called, the women were taken away by ambulance, I was checked out by the EMT, and I was comforted by friends and family. I was a wreck - I couldn't think clearly, I kept replaying the accident in my head. I had no idea if they were alive or dead.

I don't recall giving insurance information because I never saw my car again after I jumped out of it to get help, it was totaled in the accident. I guess the police or somebody got the information.

The day after the accident, I left PA for WDW for my college program. I went to have breakfast with my grandfather the next morning before I left and all I could think about was that people were looking at me knowing what had happened the night before - I was literally paranoid. If I would have stayed in PA, I think I would have had a nervous breakdown.

I was not charged with anything - the two women could have been charged with crossing at a non-pedestrian crosswalk, though I don't believe they ever were. They sued me and even though they were technically at fault, ended up getting a million dollars between the two of them from my insurance company. This was in addition to having all of their medical bills paid for by my insurance.

Do I suffer from what happened? Yes. Is it a physical injury? No, but I do suffer and think about the accident every single day of my life. I ended up in therapy since I was suffering from PTSD. Sadly, I still have flashbacks to the accident almost 9 years later.

What I am trying to say is that as a driver who was in a similar accident I can tell you for a fact that when the accident happened, I was not thinking clearly at all. I realize that the OP's son was hurting and I feel for her, but I can pretty much say that the driver is suffering and hurting too, so don't think harshly of him.

Sorry again about bringing up an old thread, but after reading every page and post, I really needed to get that off my chest. :flower3:

Thanks for asking on how my son is and sharing your story.

My son is doing ok. Having quite a few issues with his shoulder and is going to physical therapy for it. He went back to train at the dance school but because of the accident he missed his certification. His bike was also destroyed.

Last we heard they never found the guy.

A friend's niece was hit recently while riding her bike. She was in another state attending college. Unfortunately, she died from her injuries which has devastated her family and friends.

OP, I'm glad your son is doing OK. Even though he is having problems, be thankful every day that he lived through that accident.

I am glad your son is doing ok, although having some issues. I hope Physical Therapy will help and he can get the cert he missed.

He was biking down the road and a pickup truck turned into him. He flew off over the hood of it. Thankfully he was wearing his helmet. He's 23.
He just called us to let us know. He's in NH and we are in FL. I told him to go to the ER to get checked out. At the time he didn't think he was hurt but now that he's coming down off that adrenaline rush he's not feeling good. He hit his head and is having problems with the vision in the left eye. Hurt his hip, elbow, and jaw.
I called my sister that lives the next town over and she is heading over to the ER to be with him and over see things for me.
He didn't get any info from the guy that hit him but got enough incidental info that the police should be able to track him down. I told him to let the ER know that he needs to talk with a cop to file a report ASAP.

I'm a basket case. :sad1:

...wow.

I am so sorry he missed getting his certification. Is there anyway he can make it up soon? Although I've been dancing for 28 years (actually, when I had my car accident, I was coming home from dance class), I'm not familiar with the system.

Although he is having problems with his shoulder, it's probably best to be in PT. My mom actually broke her shoulder earlier this year. After it was on it's way to healing, she was in PT and it did wonders. I've had my fair share of PT...but all because of three torn and reconstructed ACLs. :scared:

I am very sorry again for what happened to your son, but I'm glad to hear he is on the road to recovery.
