My son broke his arm!

We never seem to have a dull moment around here, that's for sure.

Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., I got the "call" from the school nurse telling me to come quickly since he hurt his arm badly, and "not to scare you, but I think it's broken."

Got there a nervous wreck 5 minutes later to find his arm obviously badly broken. :( Not an easy thing for a mama to see.

They called an ambulance since the arm needed to be kept stable. Even though the closest hospital is 5 minutes from the school, it would have been a nightmare if I were driving him there, and he got upset.

He broke both bones in his right forearm (ulna and radius). The good news is that the breaks are in the center of the bones--nowhere near his growth plates or joints.

He needed to undergo general anesthesia to have the cast set. They treated it like a surgery in case he needed pins to set the bones (he did not). Since he had eaten that morning, we had to wait until 6:00 p.m. to go to the OR.

Following that, he needed to eat and hold something down before they would let us go home. He did not want to wake up after surgery though so we didn't wind up getting back home until 12:20 a.m.

The fractures happened when he fell during a kickball game in gym. He'd kicked the ball and was rounding third base for a 4 run homer. (Grand slam!) I guess he was excited and wanting to run too fast--he tripped over his feet and his arm broke the fall.

His cast is expected to be on for 5 to 6 weeks. Good news is that he'll have no more written homework. Bad news is that his baseball and soccer seasons are over for this spring.

It's all I can do since it happened to keep him still. This is one very active and atletic little boy (7 years old). No bike or scooter riding (and yes, I have caught him trying to do both already). No basketball (yeah, Mom, I can dribble with my left hand, you know). No baseball or wrestling. And I want to ban Manhunt, but doubt I'll have any success in stopping him from doing that.

AW! I hope your son isn't in too much pain.

My DH fell out of a tree trying to get his kite when he was younger. Landed Indian style (legs crossed) and broke his right leg in 6 places.

I know how frustrating it is to keep them still!! My DD6 had major surgery and was to have no rigorous activity for 2 weeks and she kept running and jumping all around, making me have heart attacks all the time! I hope the 6 weeks goes quickly and uneventfully!

Oh my goodness...Tell DS I am sorry about his arm. I hope your nerves settle down soon. I remember having to go by ambulance to get DS stitches in his head...(he was only 1 1/2) yikes it doesn't feel like you can ever settle down.

My son had a similar break a few years ago when a bigger kid fell on him while playing football. The doctor said absolutely no bike, scooter and anything else where there is a chance of falling. He told us although the broken arm is well protected the other arm is vunerable because it would have to fully catch the body during a fall. He gets many kids who ignore the advise and end up with two broken arms. That's all DS had to hear to keep clear of anything with wheels.

Good luck. The first few days are the worse.

Oh that sucks! I hope everything goes well for him. I remember what it was like to break a limb when I was younger.

When I was in 4th grade, we had an inside-the-gym day because it was raining for PE one day. We were playing some insane game where you were divided into teams and you had to race back and forth across the gym and touch the walls. Well, I was so eager to get from one side of the gym to the other that I guess I wasn't paying attention too well. I had my right arm out straight and very stiff when I slammed my hand into the wall. It caused me to shatter my elbow...on both sides. Ended up with surgery to repair it a week later as well as stitches and a sling (they couildn't put a cast on it) for six weeks.

My 5 year old DD broke her arm in March while playing knee hockey with her brothers. She too broke her fall with her arm. She was casted for 5 weeks and adjusted sooooooo well! She figured out how to use her left hand pretty quickly! Hope your little guy feels better soon!! :)

Tomorrow is his First Communion Party. I cut the sleeve of his dress shirt and hemmed it so his can wear his Communion outfit. (He can't wear his suit jacket though.) Thank goodness he had his actual First Communion last Sunday, and I had his portraits taken Monday night.

I have to tell you that the outpouring of love and support he's gotten from his classmates and friends has been astounding. I could cry thinking about it.

Yesterday was his school's Field Day. We stopped down to watch some of the races, and his classmates were so happy to see him! I think they were quite traumatized by what happened to his arm (it wasn't a pretty sight!). The police and ambulance came--a big event for a bunch of second graders.

The kids started chanting and shouting his name when we got to the field yesterday. They kept coming up to the fence to talk to him even though they kept getting scolded for not paying attention to their races.

We stayed to have lunch with them, and all of them wanted to sign his cast. So cute--one little girl (who we just adore anyway) held up and guarded his arm while everyone was signing it.

After school, his teacher stopped by out house with a gift they chipped in for--a Ginga game and a wrestling figure. The giftbag contained cards that the kids made for him. You never read funnier stuff in your life. These cards are priceless! Lines like, "God loves you even if you brake [sic] your arm." and "I pray that God spreads a Band-Aid of healing over you." (It's a Catholic school, so many of the cards had a religious theme.) Very funny words and drawings too.

My co-workers also stopped by with a Shrek 3-D DVD in a Blockbuster tub of microwave popcorn as a get well gift. The phone hasn't stopped ringing with well wishers calling to see how he's doing.

It's been a major adventure for him. I just hope we can get through it heeling without any mishaps. He has yet to lie down and nurse it. It's like he wants to show everyone he can do whatever he usually does--even with a broken arm.

My son broke the same arm , in the same place, when he was 11. (wrestling with his friends iat a neighbors house...he ended up on the bottom, LOL) I am assuming he has a cast that goes from his wrist to almost his shoulder? If so, make sure you tell the doctor if he ever experiences any rubbing under the cast...especially at the elbow area. (after the swelling goes down). I am glad my son mentioned it because they ended up recasting it. If they get a sore under the cast, it can turn into an infection, not good.

A broken arm is really a pain, especially if he is right handed. But, he will adjust to it very quickly. I was just glad it wasn't a leg!

My son had the biggest problem when the took it off...it feels really weird and uncomfortable for a few days.

Hope he feels better soon, poor guy!

Hoping your little guy heals quickly, Janice, hard to keep an active one down. My best.'s

Yes, P&W, you are correct--the cast is enormous! It's from just below his shoulder to where his fingers meet the rest of his hand.

The doctor told me that it needs to be that big to keep the injured part immobilized and also to keep a fidgety kid from wriggling out of it. (And my kid is fidgety!)

Thanks for the heads-up about the sore, and your good wishes, too. (All of you!) :)

awwwwwwww,,, hate to her th at. would kill us if dd 11 was to break anything, yoiu have our prayers and thoughts.

Oh yeah, I forgot about how it went to the hand (around his thumb). Yeah it is enormous, makes the child look even smaller...

Poor thing!

If it makes you feel any better, my son at age 6 did the same thing (but it was doing gymnastics). It sounds like a similiar break as well!

He will be fine!

Ouch!! Hope things calm down for you. Boys are so hard to keep up with sometimes. I know mine is. LOL

So sorry to hear about your sons broken arm. Just when all the spring time sports are about to start too. Hoping it heals quickly. Hugs to your son!
