Yesterday she came home from work to find her doorjam totally busted in. She called me (I live right down the block) and the police, afraid that whoever did this was still there. A hunky police officer came,
, pulled a gun and walked in. He checked everywhere but didn't find anyone. Thank God her cat, who by the way is deaf, was still there fast asleep!
The creep took only small thing, a leather bag, a cd player, some fake jewelry that looked real, but messed up her bedroom pretty bad. The worse thing he took was her DVD player, the one she inherited from my Mom's estate. This bothered her the most because it was a reminder of my mother.
The worse part is the loss of peace. Both of us moved to this part of town because it was like a small town in a larger one and most of the residents here have been here forEVER. It's a "dorm" for an adult college nearby and a home for the families of cancer patients for a nearby hospital. My two dearest neighbors are my 75yo friend and her 95 year old mother who have lived here for 30 years. They're more angry than terrified.
Two other people were burgled the same day. My sister is thinking of not going to visit her daughter in California now (I convinced her otherwise). It's ironic that two tough NYers have to experience this in a place we thought was safe.
