We were cleaning out my dad's house today and found a couple of gems. One was an old report card of my sister's from 2nd grade. I looked at it and told her that her teacher had spelled her name wrong -- teacher wrote it with an "ie" and my sister spells her name with a "y." When we looked closer at it, we saw that my mother was spelling it with an "ie," and that my sister had been spelling it wrong ever since! I think that is hilarious!

We also found a letter that my mother had written to my dad in 1961 where she asked him out on a date to her class reunion. It was awesome seeing that side of my mother. Not surprising, the letter was not at all romantic. Very business like and to the point, but it was still shocking that she was the one who asked him out! She would have called me a tramp for being so bold.

that's pretty funny maybe she should check her birth certificate:lmao:

That's funny. I knew a girl with the name ending IE... of course every one gets it wrong.

When I was working on our genealogy I found 2 birth certificates for me. One with the name I use now, Cathy, and one for Catherine. I asked my dad about it but he had no clue. One of these days I'm going to get a copy of that other one. :rotfl::rotfl:

My late DH had 2 birth certificates - with 2 different dates on them.. (He was born at home way back when..) The month and year were right, but for one, his birthday was the 3rd - and the other the 5th.. I guess the doctor filed it twice or something..

We had fun with it though.. He never knew which day we were going to celebrate his birthday on.. We would keep switching it up on him..:rotfl:

My mom spells her name with one L. It's a very rare name. Her birth mother spelt it with 2 L's. (mom was adopted by her great uncle and his second wife).

She always knew there was a discrepencay but her parents had always wrote it as 1 L. Her DL, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, car title, mortgage, social security card, and every work related paper has 1 L.

5 years ago we get her birth certificate (the after adoption amended one) while we are down there getting copies of some other family member bc's, and sure enough 2 L's.

She was nearing social security age so we went down, took proof that she had three offcial items with her name spelled her way and they did another amended birth certificate. Turns out it can totally screw up your SS if not.

This all reminds me of an "I Love Lucy" episode. Lucy is cleaning our a desk drawer and finds her marriage license. She's reading it to Ethel and realizes a name is totally spelled wrong. I can't recall if it's or Ricky's.

Anyhow, she heads down to city hall to ask if that makes a difference. Meanwhile, Fred comes over, Ricky relays the situation, and Fred says he has a friend at city hall.

She ends up not believing they're married and the rest is classic Lucy! :lmao:

When my in-laws got married the priest put the maid-of-honor's name on the marriage certificate instead of the bride's. Took them a while to discover it!

I wouldn't be suprised if many of the Ashlllyyynne's (or similiarly 'unique' names) of the world just say screw it when they are an adult..just call me Ashley. With the traditional spelling. And then only put the Ashhleyenene or whatever only on loan forms to make life easier.

Did your mom (or dad) not ever notice your sister had begun to spell her name wrong?

There was a little boy in my class last year whose parents misspelled his name on his birth certificate. The child is 5 and it still hasn't been changed. Instead of 2 n's it's 2 u's. If it was my child it would ahve been changed right away.

One of DH's childhood friends was named after a grandmother-Amelie (which was the French version of Emily and starts with "Am" sound)
She , herself started using the Emily spelling and pronunciation-dont know if it was changed legally

Not as far as we know! I told my sister that the more we go through the house, we'll probably find more clues to find out when the spelling change happened. Now, it's not her proper name that she's spelling wrong, it's the shortened version. For example, if her name was Catherine and we called her Cathy. So it's not official on the birth certificate or anything.

That makes sense. Very easy for it to have evolved over time. ::yes::

Well, if it is her nickname it makes more sense that they didn't fuss over her spelling it wrong. Perhaps they felt that was her preference? :)

DS's name is spelled the "tradional" way with an i in the middle. I wrote it that way on EVERY school form and on all correspondence with his teacher. When she started working on learning to spell their names she printed up sheets that had the less traditional spelling that drops the i. I had to go say "Um, you know you are teaching him to spell his name wrong." LOL I thought she was going to keel over but I found it funny.

Funny, my youngest brother was named after my Dad's Stepdad, or so we thought. He was a really wonderful Grandfather, and certainly deserved the honor. He never said a word. My brother's name is "Noble". We found out when our Grandfather died that his name was actually "Nobie". Everyone always called him by a nickname, so it never came up.

We hired 2 women this year who both discovered when they went to get their driver's licenses, that their mother's both spelled their names wrong when they filled out their birth certificates. Both moms had difficult labors and both say that must have been what happened. So Melissa is legally Mellisa, and Erika is legallly Eriika.
My wife's stepfather got into a nasty argument in his late 50's with his brother. He thought his middle name was Lynn. His brother said it was Lindsey. He had never looked at his birth certificate. Not only was his middle name Lindsey, he was listed as Junior on the B/C.
He also lied about his age to get into the military. THAT came back to bite him when he applied for Social Security and they told him he had to work another 2 years to be eligible. He had to hire an attorney to get THAT straightened out, something he had done nearly 50 years before.

My oldest DD has spelled her given name with a K her name is Catherine but she has always been called Kitty or Kit so for years she thought her name was spelled with a K which was the way I wanted it spelled to begin with but DH wanted the C.

Then there is my twin sister in laws who not only has misspelled names but just a few yrs ago discovered they was accidently switched at birth they faternal an really never have looked anything alike. They was almost 50 yrs old before they found out they was switched at birth.

Then there is my cousin who was misnamed my uncle was not present when my aunt filled out the birth certificate she thought his name was supposed to be Charles Edward but no it was supposed to be Samuel something an he has always been "SAM" all thru school is drivers license everything says SAM

One of my close friends has a fraternal twin brother whose name is spelled Bryan and he served in military for two years and he became disabled in an accident. After being discharged from the military he applied to a college and then got a rejection letter. Later on he found that his name from a military record was spelled as Brian and it led to the college mixing him up with someone else. It was a weird situation and he ended finding other records in which his name was spelled the wrong way.
