My sister just checked into Pop Century and ....

It can happen anywhere. My last stay at the Contemporary, I saw a roach, not a palmetto bug, run across the dresser. I thought, no big deal, this resort is old and near the water. Never even mentioned it to my family. And, of course, I've stayed at Pop 3 times since last year and never saw any. Bugs don't discrimate. I do agree if I had "talked" up how great a resort was to friends and family and it was the first impression they got when walking into a room, I, too, would be embarrassed. We have friends staying at Pop in October for the first time, since we got them a great CM discount and hope something like that doesn't happend to them as we would never heard the end of it. Since PO is 10 years older than Pop, it would be more likely to see critters there. My last stay at PO-R (Dixie) we chased out a lizzard, a frog, and assorted love bugs. Unfortunately for us we did have to cross POR off our list because of the mildew in the rooms because of the ancient air conditioning units, but that's another story.

The cockroach was just trying to get out of the weather, too. It's FL. They are everywhere. It's not a cleanliness issue in FL.

Now the hair in the room, I'd ask Housekeeping to reclean the room.

I agree too. Roaches are everywhere and at certain times of year they seem to be in swarms. Certain parts of town will just be infested with them, and then they move on. Most people get roaches and palmetto bugs mixed up and palmetto bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness and they are HUGE. Roaches are usually smaller with wings and palmetto bugs are HUGE. I had one in the kitchen the other night that was almost 3 inches long. :earseek: I couldn't kill it either, so I just had to go to bed knowing that was in my house. :guilty:

I think it's luck of the mousekeeping draw! We've been to POP twice and PO Riverside once. Our POP rooms have always been clean! However..at PO-R there was the hair in the tub thing as well as ketchup on the nightstand! No cockroaches either time, but we go in the fall and winter.

We've stayed at CBR twice and both times we saw cockroaches running around. One was crawling INSIDE the bedsheet. It crawled on my husband and he freaked out and jumped! He scared the heck out of me and saw the roaches heading towards the wall. The next morning, we left CBR. The other time, it was during the daytime and they were 3 of them running around on the damp carpet. I don't think I want to stay at CBR again.

I noticed my shorts on the floor, and when I picked them up, yep, la cockaroacha went scampering away, unfortunately for him, I was quicker, and soon he was headed to Davey Jones' locker, via the porcelain express, and this is in South Jersey.
Most amusing little story. Do you write trip reports?

if it was a monkey in the room it would have been a not so great "first experience" at the resort.

No way! If I walked into my resort room, and there was a monkey in there, that'd be AWESOME!! Who doesn't love monkeys? They could hold my place in line while I went to the bathroom, they could keep an eye out for CMs while I pool-hopped, they could steal people's mugs so I always had free soda.

I demand that WDW provide all of us with helper monkeys!!

Roaches are EVERYWHERE anyone can get them.

I'm surprised disney resorts doesn't have more of a problem with roaches than they do as many ppl as comes and goes from the resorts and I'm sure many are brought in by traveling guests.

Now if I saw several in a drawer or coming out from behind headboard I'd say there is a BUG PROBLEM in that room.

Believe it or not there are roaches that when inside will not breed. They are seasonal at my house every spring 1st year I FREAKED after that and the exterminator telling me that they not really a problem I now kill them when I see them and flush. but NEVER called the bug man again and believe me by now I'd know after 20 yrs if they had moved in my home to breed lol

Hair in bathroom it's disgusting but not the end of the world. I'd much rather find a stray hair in the bathroom than in my food.

Think about how many times have you cleaned your own bathroom at home and thought you had it clean only to go back a few mins later and see a hair in the tub or on floor??? No matter how careful we are how well we clean we MISS hairs too. Yeah I know our hair at home is different we know where it came from the point being it shows how easy it is for a mouse keeper to miss a hair in bathroom.:)

You people are very accepting.
Roaches????
Maybe in a Motel 6, but a Disney resort?
I would be checking out fast.
They should be able to afford routine maintenance exterminators.
JMHO
Routine maintenance exterminators don't kill florida roaches :rotfl:
Trust me, I've tried. When it rains in Miami, they all come running in.

I am leaving tomorrow for the pop. I will make sure that I do not come home with one. I do not need to bring home any surprises!!!!

Here in New Orleans there are two kinds of roaches

The little bitty ones - that live in walls of homes and are related to unclean conditions mostly.

And the HUGE ones that fly - they come from outside - and basically enter your homes via the cracks in windows and under doors.

Both are nasty - I have found if I spray the outside of my doors and windows with bug repellant (not saying you need to do this at a hotel) it prevernts the BIG bugs from coming inside.

But when one manages to come in - the cats have a field day!!!

Obviously you are not from Florida. No amount of "routine maintenance exterminators" will prevent a roach from coming into your room. They come in from the outside almost anytime it rains. There is really no way to prevent one from coming in every now and then.

As for Disney the can and do have "routine maintenance exterminators." If you get up any morning before 8:00 you will see trucks and golf carts all over the place (resorts, parks, and along the roadways) that say "Disney Pest Management" on the side. They spray absolutely everything.

Has anyone thought it may be that the roaches are on vacation and as WDW is the best place to be, they chose to vacation there !!! ;) :rotfl:

Not a very good way to start your vacation. :pug:

Don't worry about the roaches. If you call down to the front desk, they'll be happy to send up a complimentary "shoe" to stomp them with.

Hope the rest of the trip is great!

The point most everyone is trying to make is that in Floridia if you "don't" see a roach you are the exception. As stated they do not have preferences and they are not resort snobs, they will stay anywhere. :flower:

I guess all of us that accept that they are common and Disney can't control every single one, is that we would never even think of commenting on a forum about seeing a roach, we would simply deal with it and go on with our vacation.

For future travellers if you hope to avoid all bugs, lizards, frogs and possibly an alligator sighting, then please save your money and time and do not come to Florida, as you are going to be disappointed.

I second that demand!
We should write a letter!

I have not seen as many roaches in WDW as I have elsewhere in Florida. My parents lived in Gainesville, my in-laws in Tampa and my brothers in Ft. Myers. When we were growing up in Gainesville, my brothers would have a roach raid in the middle of the night with rubber bands and the cat. They would turn on the light in the kitchen, zap the roaches with rubber bands and have the cat run them down. Maybe disgusting, but so funny. My MIL told me to turn on the toaster before making toast. Sure enough, several roaches excaped the toaster when it was turned on. My parents stored all the food in the refrigerator, to keep roaches away. My mom used to say they were "palmetto" beetles, but, they looked like roaches to me.
