OMG, I feel so horrible for your sister. I hope she is able to afford a security system on her house...she so needs that NOW.

Does she think her ex would do something as creepy as to watch the house and after she has gone out, go in and plant a cellphone like that and then FREAK her out by calling it???

I hope the police will have some answers.

Also, even if it's a cheap prepaid phone, it will have a paper tril of where/when it was purchases/activated. the cops can trace that and figureout who it was using store surveillance more than likely.

When I was in grad school I lived alone, and one day I got home from work and found a LARGE bone-handled hunting knife sitting on my kitchen counter. I called the police immediately and they searched my apt. from top to bottom -- nothing was missing, and there was no sign of forced entry. I never did find out where that knife came from, and I still have it, 23 years later. (What can I say -- it's a really nice knife for fishing.)

For the OP, I seriously doubt that someone could still be in the house if the dogs are not reacting. If this is an ugly divorce situation, my first thought is that the person who came in was there to install surveillance equipment of some sort, and if so, she'll want to have it found.

PS: It's entirely possible to purchase and activate a prepaid phone with cash, and if so, there is no reliable paper trail. The phone number banks for prepaid phones turn over quite frequently; it's entirely possible that the person who called the phone is not looking for the person who currently had it. Everyone I know who uses prepaid phones will tell you that for the first several months after you get a new number you get a lot of wrong number calls looking for the person who had the number previously. (I use a prepaid and I've had my number for seven years now, I got wrong-number calls frequently for the first year.)

The only number on there was from when she heard it ring. She called that one back and no one answered and it said that "This person has not set up a mailbox yet" - which makes me think the phone was just purchased.

There has to be some kind of trail the police can find to figure out who it belongs to.

When your sister left the house for the 3 hours today, was that a normal Tuesday morning activity? Is there something she does regularly at that time that the ex would know about and knew she wouldn't be home? Or was it a fluke that she was gone for that amount of time?
