After heavy consideration, I jumped in and bought Nikon's new Nikon1 J1 camera (there is also the V1 which is a little larger, but more similar to a typical DSLR with a viewfinder and detachable flash). I was looking for a compact camera that would take high-quality images, and the Nikon1 looked like just the camera. It's a mirrorless, compact, SLR camera that also takes HD video and allows you to take still shots at the same time (though, admittedly, I haven't played around much with video). I was really nervous that the camera would be a bust - too good to be true (and an expensive bust at that), but so far, I've been quite pleased with the camera. I took it to Walt Disney World back in March and took the best photos I've ever taken on Disney property, and I'm so excited to go back again, now that I've had more experience with the camera.

It's also compatible with these Nikon lenses - http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/acil/accessories/mount_adapter_ft1/compatibility.htm
I haven't had the opportunity to try it with any other Nikon lens, since my DSLR was a Canon.
It's a good camera to have for traveling purposes because of its size - much easier to carry around the parks than a DSLR. However, if you're spoiled by one of the new Nikon DSLRs, this might not be up to your standards!
