Yikes, my 7 year old Kenmore troublesome refrigerator died today for the second time in 5 years. I've had it. We just went to Lowes and purchase a new one that will be delivered between 1PM and 5PM tomorrow Christmas Eve. I'm upset. Why at Christmas? We got a stainless steel Whirlpool.
I asked the guy for the model with the least trouble and complaints. He even found one in another warehouse for us so we could get it tomorrow.

Ours died a few weeks ago. The freezer was working, but the fridge was room temperature. We went shopping for a new one, after putting all the food in DH's hunting coolers. One of the "mom and pop" stores we stopped at had the one we were looking for. We casually mentioned to the sales lady that our freezer was still OK, but the fridge was warm. She asked if it was a top-mount freezer (it was) and if we'd tried defrosting it (we hadn't). She said the cool air from the freezer is piped into the fridge to keep it cool and that ice can build up and block the airflow.

We went home and tried it and the fridge was working fine the next day!:woohoo:

I sent the business a thank you note because they saved us about $1000 for a new appliance that we would not have needed!:yay:

It pays to do your research and find a solution. My less than five year old refrigerator went last year, but I searched a few appliance forums and found the solution, ordered the part and it was delivered the next day, for well less than $100.00. Some sites you can type in your particular model, and you can find the common problems for your brand and model. Of course, my husband is pretty handy with the repair himself. I do regret it sometimes because I have been wanting all new stainless appliances, and I feel guilty replacing all my appliances that are only 6 years old. I have to wait until the oven or fridge goes completely to even consider it.

Hmmmmm ... 7 years seems to be the magic number with kenmore. I have had trouble with their dishwashers and my old refrigerator. I vowed never ever to purchase from them again!

Last time the compressor went on this same refrigerator, we waited 21 days for a repairman to come to put in the new compressor that was sitting in my kitchen waiting for Sears to find someone to put it in. I swore that I would never buy from Sears again.
The freezer is completely dry, but I've got some coolness in the bottem. I'm using a camper cooler for some of my items I need to bring to a holiday party tomorrow. My appt time is 1PM to 5PM, with my luck it will be 5PM.

I'm sure you've already thought and done something for the mom and pop store employee that helped you save $1,000. What a Christmas Angel she is right before Christmas. I hope she feels as wonderful as you and your DH do.

Oh no, please read my thread.

Than Google Whirlpool Warranty Problems and see about the class action suit that was filed in 2007 against them and the many many problems that people have had. I also had a stainless steel fridge. The compressor has now broken down three times in the 3 years I owned it.

I wish you the very best of luck that you get one of the good fridges, I truly do. I also recommend that you purchase the extended warranty with Lowes because you can not count on Whirlpool to back up their warranty.

Our 7yo freezer just died tonight, too:confused: I've had my income cut by 2/3 this fall (home daycare), so there is no way we can afford a new one. There goes my ability to stock up on sale items.

It's hard to stay in the Christmas spirit when hit with this.

Hang in there!!!

Lowes was offering the 4 year extended warranty for $99, and yes the 10% discount for buying today covered the $99 warranty.

Our 10 yr. old Kenmore fridge went last weekend! We were very upset as we had a bunch of company at our house. My husband on a whim decided to turn it off and back on again. It started working! We still had the Sears guy come to look at it (we have an extended warranty on it), but he couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Good luck. Doesn't it always seem to happen when you have the least time and money to deal with it?

im working on my heat.woke up this morning and my heat is not working.this is the second time this has happend .the first time was the day dw and i got back from wdw.walked in the house and no heat.
thought it had somthing to do with wdw. came home in june from the family trip and the air cond. had broke sometime that week.yep june in georgia with no air:scared1:
dont spend alot for your appiances, they dont last.have been in my house 15 or so years and the list is:2nd fridge / 2nd stove /3 RD DISHWASHER / 2nd microwave.now my heat/air guy is talking new unit.i told him NO.
im a home remolder /contractor so i deal with this everyday.appiances are made so cheap these days thay are not worth fixing.
by the time you get somthing payed for its time to replace it.
sounds like a conspiracy to me.

Because of all the foreclosures this is a pretty good time to buy used appliances. Some dirtbags even sell the appliances that came with the house they didn't pay for before they get kicked out. Check craigslist and your local newspaper. Because they are bulky and hard to move it's easy to make a lowball offer.

I went to Lowes at 3:30PM on Wednesday, and my new refrigerator was delivered at 3:30PM on Thursday Christmas Eve. I am happy, and tomorrow I have to go shopping. I had an 18 1/2 cu ft, went to a 21 cu ft stainless steel, freezer on the top. More room than I need...
