My property tax in New Jersey just went from $4000 to $10,000!!!!

Exactly. I wish the Yankees would stay! I wish people would stay in NJ - I hate how my town and church keep losing people to the Carolinas. I start resenting the Carolinas for taking away all these people I miss!!! :(

But with tax rates like you stated, it makes no sense for many families to stay here.

Amen KariBritt01! We're in Cabarrus County. We've got a 2,242 sq. ft. home with about an acre of land. We've lived here 3 years. November of last year the City of Concord annexed our neighborhood so now not only do we have to pay County taxes (which increased BTW) we have to pay City taxes. I think our total tax bill was about $13-14,000?

HugsForEeyore: I'm sorry your friends are moving away. It's not only the tax rates they're getting away from it's the cold a$$ weather up there! We rarely get snow here and what we do get is usually gone by lunch time!

OP: sorry to hear this! :grouphug: In one year???? Thats just nuts...HOW are they justifying this?

I am on LI, NY and our taxes are about 12k (1/2 acre, we get STAR discount in NY though current administration is taking that away from us, so they say, so thats about 1k more for future) and having started at about 4200 16 years ago..
2/3 of this is school taxes...which are out of control (though last two years no increase, which is about time)

again,. sorry to hear your situation....just what people really need now, more taxes. less $$ to live on.more house sales that won't sell thus MORE foreclosures and more deteriorated neighborhoods...
great for the economy :sad2:....yet we as a nation spend and spend and spend or should I say give it away, give it away, give it away...while hardworking citizens are drowning...............so very sad indeed!:sad1:

I'm in Texas. Our property tax is $10,800 per year. Of course, we do not have a state income tax. Everyone I know budgets between $700-$1000 per month for property taxes.

You must have a big place and/or lots of acreage. My house is 1700 sft & about 1/3 of an acre. My property taxes are about $3000.

Wow....my town voted years ago to only have to pay 1% of our home value at time of purchase. But we have a lot of propositions on our tax bill every year that add up, but nothing compared to the price you are paying. OUCH!

Do you have a lot of land????? Also what is your home worth.....

The economy has really wrecked a lot of budgets, which were relying on a lot of sales tax and income tax revenues that simply never materialized because of the lack of economic activity during this recession. Yet, the costs of providing services, such as police protection, didn't go down at all.

Our state is bumping the sales tax by 25% to make up for the difference. Other states are perhaps more progressive, choosing to have landowners carry more of the bill (and therefore increasing property taxes). Still others are aiming their revenue enhancement at the folks who earn money through working, through income tax increases.

North Carolina is increasing both income taxes and sales taxes.

Trust me, not that much higher! I'm a renter (can't save for down payment) and I'm paying $1360 for a 70 yr old 700 sq ft garden apartment and that's hundreds less than it would be if I hadn't come in $165 below market value 14 years ago.(The previous tenant had lived here so long that they couldn't bring it up to market value and keep within the limit) Our town is rent controlled but my rent always goes up 4% each year. Unfortunately we don't make double or triple what most of the country does-we just pay that much more to live here where we grew up.

I'm paying $1473 (includes my taxes)for my mortgage. I have a 90 year old colonial not on a big plot of land. My taxes are $4200 yearly. but supposed to go up.

I pay over $5k for a small home (about 1,000 sq. feet) on a lot and still don't feel comfortable sending my DD to public school. Sometimes I hate NJ.

I have a friend in Upper Montclair that has an incredible school system. About 5 years ago I know she was paying $22k. :scared1: I haven't bothered to ask what she is paying now. I know it would freak me out. I don't understand how anyone can pay that. :confused3

 It stinks, doesn't it? Then, on top of that, you are considered "well to do" and have to pay MUCH higher income taxes:sad2:

It is so sad.

I get depressed seeing hard working people lose it all because they are made to carry the weight of others. It is getting more obvious by the day that this is destroying lives:sad1: It has to stop:mad:

OP--I hope there is a way you can keep your home. My heart breaks for you:grouphug:

Wow, how do you all afford your taxes???

I'm in a suburb of Pittsburgh. My house is 1,827sq ft and on 1/4 acre.

My property tax is $560.28 each year.

 Wow! Good for you!! I'm jealous. I make a good salary but I'm tired of the government telling me I'm rich.
We pay some of the highest taxes, car insurance, etc. My monthly commute (not counting gas to the train station) is over $500. It's obscene what we pay in the northeast!!

I am so very sorry OP!!!!

I love living in NJ, but yeah, I hate the proerty taxes. We pay $18K a year, but luckily we knew that when we bought the house. If our taxes suddenly went way up, we'd be really upset too.

The thing that kills me is that for years it was just me and DH....at least now we finally have a baby that will go to public school one day and we'll finally get to take advantage of our own tax dollars (70% of our taxes go to education).

I guess I have to sell my house. Ocean county NJ is out of control. They must think all the middle class people living here can afford such a crazy tax hike! All the neighbors got together and hired a lawyer, but i really doubt this will help. At first we were got an increase from $4000 to $7200 but our tax bill came in the mail saying it was going to $10,000. I can see alot of for sale signs going up in the next few weeks, but i'm wondering who can afford these taxes.

Sorry to hear that. I live in Sussex County - my taxes have been over $10k for some time now :( We went from $6800 in 2002 to this now. Every year it goes up and up and up.

Don't you pay school property tax down there in Bethel Park? Sure, our county prop tax is $626, but then our township prop tax is $408, and our school prop tax is $2800, so about $3834 total. My house has a low assessed value, and others with 3-4X the house pay 3-4X more in taxes.

my PARKING SPACE has higher taxes than your house

Yes, I bought a parking space which has its own mortgage payment.

My state, in an effort to close the budget gap, is going to penalize people and businesses who owe (underpay) withholding taxes at the end of the year.

That stinks. Long Island has taxes like that. It is ridiculous here. A postage stamp of land can have taxes of $12000. It all depends on where you live. I don't know how young people are going to afford it here for much longer. Between your mortgage (House prices are insane here), your insurance and your taxes that monthly bill can be quite large.
I wish you luck and hope you find a solution. Maybe you can ask for a reasessment?

You are lucky they held off the reassessment as long as they did! Our property taxes (on our 1,800 square foot home) is now at $11,000 (we were reassessesed 2 years ago - our town held on as long as they could). I'm sorry about your increase, but those of us in other counties (I'm in Essex) are tired of carrying the load. Something needs to be done for all of us!

I'm shocked at reading how high some of your tax bills are... $18,000? That is totally insane! It definitely helps explain the influx of people re-locating from NJ and NY to the Carolinas.

I have a 3,000 sq. ft. house on 1 acre of land and pay just under $3,000 per year in local property taxes. It would cost 1/2 that amount if I had built my home outside the City's jurisdiction (we pay both City and County property taxes). Our taxes went up a little this year (mine by $150) and some of the residents were really complaining.

Yes, it looks like our state legislature is going to raise taxes (income and sales), but in the grand scheme of things the raises aren't what I would consider significant. I won't gripe about taxes here when I know it could be a lot worse. If they don't raise taxes, then it will mean that a large number of state employees will be getting pink slips and I believe that would increase the downward spiral of our state's economy.

We were reassessed and our appraisal amount increased 100%. We protested and they reduced it so it only increased 40%. The tax rate also increased for this coming year. Our taxes are increasing from $10,000 to $16,000. If we could sell our house for the assessed value we would.
