My poor DS, I feel so helpless!

My DS who is 7 goes to a Catholic school in the next town over and not in the same school district as we live. But he must ride the school bus from our district to his school with the public school kids.

Some of these kids are not from very good homes and alot of them act up on the bus. A couple months ago, my DS and the boy next to him got into a confrontation and my son got hit. I find out later though it was innocently provoked by my DS and the other boy took it the wrong way. (Long story, but I understand how the kid did take it the wrong way) They have since talked it out and became friends.

Now another boy, is calling DS a "loser". He has been in trouble before. Last year and this year. I asked DS and its not just him its many kids he calls a loser. "My family is better than yours" My family is stronger than yours" etc. DS told the bus driver and he told the principal of the public elementary school where this other boy goes. DS says he never touches anyone, just yells things from his seat.

I told DS, just ignore him. I can't drive DS to school everyday due to work and DD's speech therapy. We have our house for sale and this will be his last year riding the bus with these kids. I just feel so bad. I know he needs to deal with it and will encounter kids like this everywhere . DS is so nonconfrontational. He won't stick up for himself either. I wish I could protect him forever. Thanks for listening.

Wow I have never heard of putting catholic school kids on the same bus as public school kids...that must stink for your son! I went to public school and the catholic school kids (all 2 of them) had a bus stop across the street from ours and we just tormented the heck out of everything from their "dorky" skirts to the shoes etc...I couldn't imagine the grief they would get if they took the bus with us!!

actually, it is pretty common depending on that particular State.

As for dorky, give me a navy blue uniform over a 9 year old dressing like a Charmed One Witch any day of the week.

Sorry, Rolie. My kids don't ride a school bus, but I talk to other parents. From what I understand -- it is a merciless environment.

I had to ride the bus with the Public kids. I had my little brother & the cute kid from South Philly that moved into our neiborhood who was a blackbelt. That helped. Just the fact that he was from South Philly scared everyone.

Your son sound like he's doing ok. He is yelling back. Remember show no fear!

That's just a mean thing to do. Many of the Catholic school kids hate those uniforms just as much as you think they are dorky. Besides, I'd rather see kids in those 'dorky' uniforms more than some of the trashy outfits I see some public school kids wear (belly buttons showing, bosoms hanging out, thongs sticking up).

I can not believe that everyone seems to be going under the notion that the "poor Catholic School kids" have to ride with the rowdy public school kids. Some of the most misbehaved and sneaky kids I knew when I was in high school wore Catholic School uniforms! My children go to public school and it doesnt seem so bad to me. I guess I just never knew that parents of catholic school kids viewed "the other side" like this.

As for your ds. I hope he hangs in there. He sounds like a strong kid and I am sure he will be fine. No matter what school he goes to he will encounter issues and he seems like he is handling it wonderfully. Best of luck

Even in Catholic Schools Please don't teach your son that "these kids" are rotten (really, they are rotten--I agree with you there) b/c they go to the dreaded public schools. Believe me, he will run into many-a-rotten child in the Catholic school system, even on an All Catholic bus

Also--In our town, some of our busses are shared with the local parochial school. Ahh, but our public school children wear uniforms too--So everyone looks like a dork

Seriously, as a mom, I really don't think they look dorky. It is lovely to drive through town when all the schools let out and everyone under the age of 18 looks, well, nice

I know it is 'ancient history' and that it happened when you were a kid, however; I'm sorry but things like that still rub me the wrong way (so, not questioning your behavior as an adult, unless I see you stealing Mickey bars from little kids at the MK ), just responding to the situation of kids picking on kids that makes me hot under the collar. I can honestly say that I wasn't one of those kids who picked on others and neither are my kids now. And, there are good and bad kids at both kinds of schools. I'm a Catholic school teacher. My kids go to public schools. We have problems with kids at my school, however; there are many more problems in the public schools. I think it all comes down to parenting and the way the school deals with the problems. The OP said that the bus driver informed the school and hopefully the parents were informed. If I was that parent of the bully (because that is what he is - it may not seem like much now, but if he's doing that at age 7 or 8 it will only get worse from there) the problem would be over with immediately because whatever consequence the school would provide, mine as a parent would be triple.

To the OP, Just as I tell my students and my own children, the best thing for your son to do is never show that it bothers him or it will only get worse. And, hey, let him know that he is getting an awesome education based on wonderful Christian values! He might not appreciate it now, but he will as he gets older!

I think what your missing is the fact of ONE BOY alone in a uniform in a bus full of Kids from another school. It's a recipe to be picked on. It could be any combo. Think of it like sending your son on the bus in a dress with the football team.
