My Parents Gave US the World! A Poly Dream PTR - April 2012**UPDATE 4/10/12 pg 10**

Oh, and a little thing I learned from my past trips on how to avoid driving the rest of my family nuts with all my planning: I never actually shared with my DW or my parents (who joined us last time) the itinerary or touringplans I had planned for each day with the exceptions of our ADRs. I used the touringplan as a very loose guideline and when someone would want to do something different or spend more time at a particular attraction, I would just go with the flow and re-adjust the plan in my head. All the research and DIS readings can still never predict which attractions or activities your family is going to like until you're actually there. At least with the research, you can be prepared and avoid a situation like walking by TSM for the first time at 3pm and having your DD declare that we must go on this ride, 90 minute wait time be-damned!! :lmao:

This is great advice! With the exception of my DD everyone else in the family doesn't really want to hear about all my plans - their eyes just glaze over and change the subject soon after. :) They'll thank me later though when we're in the parks!

This is our one and only day scheduled to head over to Animal Kingdom.

I think it opens at 9:00 am on this day, and I don't anticipate arriving there much later than that. My daughter is VERY excited for this park. She wishes she was brave enough to do Expedition Everest, and to be honest I wish she was too. I know it would scare the pants off of us, but that's kind of the point, right? LOL Unfortunately, she gets terribly motion sick (even in a slow car ride) so it's not something we want to risk ruining the whole day over. We know that there is plenty to see and do there without making her puke in a garbage can! So, our list of "must-do's" at Animal Kingdom are:

1. Kilimanjaro Safari

2. Finding Nemo - the musical

3. Maharaj Jungle Trek

4. Festival of the Lion King

5. Kali River Rapids

6. Eat a late lunch/early supper at Yak & Yeti

Not sure what order those would best be seen in yet, but that's really all we MUST see when there. We understand that this park is just so wonderful to leisurely walk through, and we really want to take our time exploring the grounds. Maybe we'll even find that beautiful vine-lady! (What's her name again?) And does anyone know anything about the "Pangani Forest Exploration Trail"? What is that and is it worth seeing?

So, this again, is ALL I have planned for this day. There is some information that I need in order to better plan this day I guess. Like:

What time does the park open & close? AND of coarse -
What is the best way to get to AK from the Poly? And how long does it take approx? :confused3

I know! I have been trying to share my plans with my parents and they both tune me out. It's kinda frusturating though - I am just trying to talk about it cause I am so excited! I think they just imagine it as me being all crazy and micro-managing everything, when really I just want to get an idea of what they want to see! My mom has said to me though, that she and my Dad don't care what we see/do as long as we are having fun then they are happy! :goodvibes

Yo don't want to check out Dinoland or ride Dinosaur ?? Also, my kids LOVE the boneyard. And Primeval Whirl isn't that scary of a coaster. Last time we rode it, it was really slow, but still fun.

I would imagine you could get a bus to AK from the Poly with no problem.

I would imagine that

You're day sounds nice and relaxed!

From what I understand the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is similar to the Maharaj Jungle Trek but with diff. animal enclosures to look at and Africa vs. Asia themeing. I know we'll be doing both.

For transportation there should be a direct bus from the Poly and from what I've been told it's always best to allow up to 1 hour to get from one point in the parks to another just in case.

Since you're going to be there just one week prior to us I'll be following your trip closely. I think I too am more excited than our daughter!!:rotfl:

We will probably do some wandering around Dinoland, but we will absolutely NOT do Dinosaur. DD is very scared of that ride, we have watched videos of it, and just the videos scare her! :scared1: The darkness and the volume - mix those together, and yeah -that's a recipe for a full-blown anxiety attack for her. My DD can barely do the superslide or the tilt-a-whirl at the local fair, so I think it's safe to say that Primeval Whirl is out of the running. Again, who know what the day will bring, but because she is slightly scared of heights, spinning makes her sick and she doesn't care for dark, loud, scary rides, alot of the attractions at AK are out of the running for us.

And let me just say - that I am a-ok with that! Whatever makes my DD feel safe and loved, I will do!

Just passing through and thought I would offer up some ideas, based on our experiences (This is the Glen part of Katie and Glen - Katie is the major planner). We do DxDP and plan things in detail, so not all of what we do will apply (or even be enjoyable from your angle). Hopefully some of the below will be of use when planning.

I have found that WDWinfo (a partner of the DISboards) has all the info I could ever want and then some about each park and the resorts.

1. My son did NOT like Dinosaur. After riding once with his head tucked in my shoulder, he agreed to try it again (like the trooper he is), but no success... he got scared. In hindsight, I regret asking him to try it a second time (he was not upset after we got off the ride, but I was sad that he did not enjoy).

2. Food wise, Flame Tree BBQ is a MUST stop for us (our favorite). Since you are on QS, this may be OOP for you. Regardless, I think it is one of the better places to eat lunch at AK. If you are getting there for rope-drop, it may be worth considering an ADR at Tusker house - it is they normal buffet, with chracters. However, depending on when your ADR is, you can get into the park before rope drop and be inside at / before and get earlier start. Avoid Raintree - we were underwhelmed by it.. same as a Raintree in any city.. nothing special.

At the Poly, We LOVE breakfast at Ohana.. a must do on every trip of ours (ok, only two, so far.. but there will be more!!! :yay:)

3. Maharaja Jungle Trek is a walking tour that features bats, komodo dragons, bats, deer, birds, etc.... Did it once and don't need to do again. Kinda neat if you are into that, but I would do the Kilimanjaro Safari personally.

4. If you are into it, you may also want to check out Flights of Wonder. It is a bird show and is amazing. My Son also enjoyed the train ride to Rafiki's Planet Watch.

I have stayed at the Poly on business (overflow hotel for the CR). If you want to eat at Ohana, you will need an ADR - no way to get to it otherwise. (Sinc eyou are staying there, it might be something to consider early one morning). Having said that, I was perfectly content to eat at Kona when I stayed there (eating solo, I had a 20 min wait max, but service was quick and food was excellent). The Kona coffee stand is one of the few places to get REAL coffee on property (as opposed to Nescafe podwer junk... :sad2:). And at the coffee stand, you can get real Kona coffee :cool1:

You will find a bus from your resort to every park. Being a monorail resort, you can take the monorail to MK and TC, where you coudl transfer to the epcot monorail or a bus.. Here is specific info:

Note: my wife will likely log on later and correct any errors I make

Our family loves AK for that exact reason you said - everything can be enjoyed at a much more relaxed pace especially if you take the time to enjoy the scenery. We love it so much that we are planning to spend two days at the park! The park hours are currently listed as 9am-6pm for the 17th. A couple of thoughts.

We love to do the Safari first thing at park opening. The animals tend to be more active before the day warms up and the standby wait is minimal that we can enjoy it without a FP. Also, depending on our mood, we like to do a second Safari ride later in the afternoon.

I second the recommendation for Flametree BBQ! By far our favorite QS in AK :thumbsup2 Also a heads up about Yak and Yeti - we were very eager to try it since we heard so many people who loved it. Except we didn't realize that Yak and Yeti has both a QS and TS - we had the QS and was a bit disappointed only later to find out the people who recommended were talking about the TS! :lmao:

Sounds like it would be easier if you get a FP for Kali. You could do the jungle trek or eat at Yak and Yeti while waiting for the return time which averages about an hour later from the time you get your FP.

We haven't seen Divine yet - but her schedule is listed at http://wdwent.com/.

A couple of other things our kids love at AK are the Parade and the Dinosaur Boneyard.

Sounds like a great day planned for AK!! I can't remember...but are you planning on watching the parade? If not, try to make time for it ~ I think it's my favorite!! Also...I'm obviously in the minority, but I wasn't that impressed with Flame Tree:rolleyes1 Maybe b/c I'm from the south, and we have some really good barbeque around here! Don't get me wrong, it was good ~ just not as good as I expected from all the hype. DH usually gets Yak n Yeti CS and he likes it, and they have those minutemaid frozen lemonade things and you can get them as your dessert ~ might be a good option for a warm day!

My dd was like that too - she HATED Dinosaur b/c of the bright flashes and the loud noises. She's sensitive to that type of stuff. She's willing to give it a try again now that she'll be 14 but I'm pretty sure she'll still hate it. I'm ok with that too - I am prone to getting a migraine or two per year so the bright flashing lights worry me - I rode through it hiding my face from all the flashes. LOL.
It's a good choice to avoid that one if noise and bright lights bug her.

Thank you so much for all of the tips Glen! I think we will try the Maharaj Jungle Trek, just for the sake of having some down time to explore and hopefully get some nice pictures. :) My parents are absolutely not allowing me to make ANY ADR's, so I am afraid O'hana is out of the question. I am sure we will have plenty of yummy meals at Kona and Captain Cooks though! :thumbsup2 My parents and I are HUGE coffee drinkers, so the fact that the Poly is the only place that makes "real" coffee was a huge bonus for us! Can't wait to try it out. We shall see if we like it, we are Tim Horton addicts up here though, and nothing beats a Timmys double-double I'm afraid. Thanks for the link to the transportation information. I will check that out ASAP! Thanks for joining in on my PTR!

Hey Dave! Thank you for your continued enthusiasm with suggestions and pointers! :thumbsup2 I was totally planning on heading straight to the Safari at 9:00, so that's good we are on the same page. Is this one of your AK days as well? LOL - We just may photobomb some pics after all! The reason that I am thinking Yak & Yeti is because all 4 of us LOVE chinese food. Like  it! So, aside from Epcot, this is really our only place to get it. Thanks for the schedule for Divine! That's awesome! I'll check it out right away and make note of her times so we can try and get some nice photos of her. My dad would really get a kick out of her I think. I will definately do the fastpass grab for Kali before lunch! Great suggestion!

I don't really have ANY parades scheduled in our week, I guess I just figure if we catch one, we catch one ya know? And my mom and I both LOVE lemonade, so you may just have us 100% sold on Yak & Yeti now! :cool1:

Glad to hear she's not the only one. Although, my cousin just returned from DW last month, and her kids wouldn't even go near the attraction itself. They said it was so loud you could hear it WAY outside!

ps, looks like your plans are coming together nicely :)

Thanks! I think they are too, but then I look at some other PTR's and I then I feel SOOO unorganized and unprepared again! :confused3

You may also want to hit Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, which is where the gorillas, hippos, and meerkats are located.

mmmm... Timmy's - love Timmy's coffee. Bring some with you and use it in your in room coffee maker (and the small filters - the room has pre-packaged coffee packs). We were lucky on our first trip - our waiter at Le Cellier was from Toronto area and (as we told him our horror at the Nescafe) brought out a small tin with some Timmy's in it for us to use in our room. :worship:

Good advice about bringing Tim's coffee and filters - THANKS! I wouldn't survive the week without real coffee!! Looking forward to trying the Kona coffee but Nescafe - yuck!

Sadly we won't be in AK on Tuesday :( so I won't be able to sneak in behind one of your pics. We'll be in MK that day.

And I agree on everyone's comment on Dinosaur. DW and I tried it last time while the kids were playing away in the Boneyard with my parents. Let me tell you, I almost jumped out of my seat a couple times including the moment the ride snaps a photo for you. When I saw the screen with my pic, I was laughing so hard because I looked exactly like this (and I'm not exaggerating one bit) --> Ok, maybe my face wasn't as blue  Anyway, knowing our DD5, we figured out right away that she wasn't going to be ready for this ride for a looooooooong time.

On our last trip (last January), my oldest was finally 40 inches and able to ride Dinosaur. DH or I had never ridden it, but I knew it was supossed to be scary. She isnsisted on going! I was pg, so couldn't ride, so DH took her. He said she hid under his arm the whole time!! But when she got off, she said she wanted to ride it again, just to make sure she didn't like it:rotfl:She is such a thrill seeker!! She is already talking about going again on our next trip and she's excited b/c I can ride with her this time :scared:

Gorillas and Hippos?!? Wow. I have NEVER seen animals like that in person before. That is very exciting for us! Awesome. I can't wait for AK. That's a great idea about bringing some Tim Horton's with us. I will buy 2 small cans. As for the small filters, do you mean the basket ones or cone ones? And for a 4 cup coffee maker or a standard 12 cup coffee maker? And what a wonderful server you had. Spreading that Pixie Dust! LOVE IT! (Do they serve Tim Hortons there?!)

Oh my god that's hilarious. You know it's scary when it's terrifying the adults. :scared1: Yup, I definitely think I am making the right choice skipping Dinosaur. Maybe if we go back when she's a teenager, but for now - skipping it!!

If memory serves it would be the 4 cup flat bottom basked ones. Of course, murphy says I could be wrong (shhhhhh, don't let my wife hear I said that). :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

Don't remember if they serve TH at Le Cellier... :confused3

Yep - close ups of the gorillas and hippos are pretty cool. First time I ever saw a hippo do a barrel roll - got pictures here somewhere (not sure if they are in our December TR or not). Also, the gorillas had a baby recently (pretty sure those made it to the TR). It should be just over two years old now - it was very cute.

You MUST ride It's Tough to be a Bug inside the circle of life tree. This ride is so funny and cute.
