We bought a Maytag Neptune washer less than 6 months ago. Yesterday, while starting a load of sheets, it stopped working after it added some water hesitantly. I am so hopping mad! It is still new! Now, I see on the internet that this washer is nortorious for having problems! The appliance company is coming out tomorrow to fix the problem (warantee) and the clothes keep piling up and piling up and piling up!

If any of you are looking for a new front loader; do a search for "Maytag Neptune washer problems" on the internet and see what could be ahead of you if you buy one! I didn't and now I am screwed. This thing cost $1200.00; it should not break like this! Think twice before buying a Neptune! Just a warning I did not get before we bought this washer!!!!

I hope your problem gets resolved quickly!

We bought a Neptune set nearly a year ago and we LOVE it.

At least you have it under warranty!

One of my friends also had a problem with hers when it was fairly new & she told the repairman that she didn't think she'd have any problems since it was a "Maytag." Well, he gave her some info she was shocked to find out....Maytag sold out to Frigidare (?) who also makes Magic Chef products! They keep the "Maytag" name since people have come to trust that name.

I had a Maytag washer/dryer years ago that caused no problems in the 10 years I owned it. The woman who bought my condo (with Maytag) tells a former neighbor of mine she still has it (8 years later) & has never had to place a service call!!

I have a Maytag stove I purchased a couple years ago (due to the "Maytag" name) & I've thought about taking a baseball bat to it a few times. "Buyer beware" is right when buying Maytag products nowadays! :(

My friend has a Neptune and it just broke, too. Costing her $500 to fix! She said the same thing - "what about your ads with the repairman with nothing to do". She's going to call Maytag and see if they'll pay for part of it but she doubts it.

I've had two computer board problems with my Neptune since it was installed.

The first problem was that the washer never stopped. It was in a constant rinse/spin cycle.

The second problem was a blown segment on another board. I had started a load of laundry and mid-cycle heard a very loud pop. It sounded like something snapped off inside the machine. The pop was electrical though. The washer was filled with water and clothes and couldn't be drained (no spin).

I ended up buying an extended warranty since the repairs were so expensive.

We did not buy one with purchase. Can you buy one after the fact? Just curious. I did find with a search for a class action suit against Maytag for the Neptune problems. I signed up; we will see what happens. I don't think a washing machine that expensive should be that problematic. I spent the extra money for the reliable name of Maytag...what did I get? I got the desire to get a Whirlpool, now!

Oooohhhh...I was thinking about those for our new house. I think I'll cross those off my list!

PS - AZKathy, I just had to LOL at your censored smilie!!!

Yes, they should offer it to you before your 1 yr. warranty expires.

We bought a Maytag Atlantis almost 1 yr. ago, no problems so far. We didn't buy the entended warranty at the time, but plan to buy it now (will send my check tomorrow). It's going to cost about $80 for 3 years. They also offer one year for about $32.

When we bought our Atlantis, the salesmen kept telling me that I should buy a Neptune. I had read about their problems and told him so, he said he never heard of problems with Neptune washers. I told him to check planetfeedback.com to learn more about it. He stopped pushing the Neptune washer after I told him that.

Good luck getting it fixed and I hope it doesn't happen again.:sunny:

while I do not have a Neptune the last maytag I bought is junk. I had bought one 9 yrs ago and killed it in 9 yrs thinking I use it twice as much as normal families. I have 6 kids and do about 4 loads a day. So I bought another one..middle of the road, good value for the money was the review. I had it 3 mos and the agitator has fallen off 3 times. Hubby fixed it once and the repairman has been there 2 times. After ording a new one and installing it, it has behaved. I will think twice before ever buying another maytag product. And Mishetta, thanks for the infor about fidgidare buying them out. No wonder all the Probs now. Thanks for the info...Melissa

I was going to buy the neptune but I went with the Kenmore Elite Frontloader. It received good reviews from consumer reports. I'm glad I went with that instead of the neptune b/c I've heard a lot of problems lately with that machine. I'm sorry you are having trouble and I hope they can fix it for you real soon.

I got a neptune back in 12/2001. 2 weeks after we got back from our Disney trip my washer went for a second time in about 8 months and couldn't bring myself to spending another $200+ on it.

Last month I put in a load of sheets, from both DD's twin beds. Closed the door and put in detergent, pushed my start button and it started filling the water. As I was about to walk away it started beeping and on the display it said "do" but kept filling up. At that point I noticed that even though I "heard" the door lock the light was not lit. I stopped it and called MIL for her input seeing how DH was on his first day of his new job and I had no way to contact him. We decided to let it keep going and see what happened. Well it did stop again and the display showed something else in it, I believe it was a "F" no clue what that meant.

I called Maytag and was on hold for almost a 1/2 hour waiting to talk to someone. I made an appointment for a Wednesday(it was Saturday when it happened). I was told that the door had to be opened manually and once that was done the machine had to be reset!

So now I'm freaking out because the washing machine has my kids sheets being held hostage and I need to get them clean so they can sleep in their own beds that night. When DH finally gets home I tell him about whats happened and what I was told on the phone to manually open the door. Well he decides to do it and does so gently enough not to pull the entire pull cord to release the door all the way out but enough to open the door. I was able to do the sheets as my guinee pigs to test the make sure the machine worked right and was able to cancel my service appointment.

I'm just so happy I spent all that money to buy a "good" washer. Unfortunately for me, DH wasn't a Consumer Reports freak back then.

Interesting, I've had a Maytag Neptune for over 3 years and never had any problems. I wonder if they've changed something.

I have had a Neptune for 2 years... and have never had a problem. On the other hand, before we bought the neptune, we had a GE that lasted only 7 years! In those 7 years, we had the transmission replaced twice. The third time, we decided to buy the Neptune. I absolutely love the machine!

Ironically I came to this board tonight to ask opinions on the Neptunes. We saw the washer and drying closet, and were pretty impressed. Now I'm having second thoughts.

Three years ago we bought a new dishwasher, a Whirlpool, and I absolutely love it. Two years ago we needed a new washer, and I again bought Whirlpool. It's been problem free. (The Neptune's are for the Florida house) Now that I'm readin these problems, I'm really thinking I should stick with the tried and true Whirlpool brand that I've been so happy with.

I can get a wonderful Whirlpool washer and dryer for almost $600 less than the Neptunes will cost me... lots to think on.

First of all, I WANT YOUR HOUSE! I REALLY want your house! You are living my dream!

Do a search with "Maytag Neptune washer problems", you will be amazed what you see. I did not do this before we bought. We bought for that reputation of Maytag. We had a Whirlpool that quit on us in 5 years, so I did not want to get another Whirlpool. I really wish I was not so mad at Whirlpool when we went shopping!

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. Can't wait to tell DH that we're NOT getting those appliances.

Anne

PS--I'll have more house photo's to add in early March :)

We bought a Neptune washer and drier when they first came out about 5 or 6 years ago, no problems. They replaced 27 year old Maytag washer and drier, our first. So we have been a Maytag family now for 33 years. :)

I did search the net before we recently replaced our washer and dryer, I bought a Bosch!
I found these forums very very helpful!

Wow thanks for the heads up. We have the Maytag Atlantis washer and dryer and it works wonderful. But DH and I are buying a house and was going to look into the Neptune because wanted a front load washer as well as staying in the Maytag family. Now we have to do more research.
