My neighbor appears to have a dog that can perform magic! Long..

Some of you may remember me posting about this neighbor before with the two great danes - one that was a "biter".. I guess that dog passed away during the winter and she replaced him with a great dane mix..

Although this dog is only a "puppy", he's pretty big already - the size of my DD's full-grown shepherd mix.. Anyhow, she works all day and this new dog keeps escaping from the fenced yard.. (She doesn't have the dogs on a "run" or "chained" - but they do have a very, very large "doggy door" they can go through to go back inside the house if they want to..) Over the weekend the new dog got loose several times and from what my DD told me it had something to do with the fence - which has since been repaired..

So today I go out to start my van (so the darn battery won't keep dying) and here's the new dog prancing around my yard.. His big, long tongue was hanging out of his mouth and it almost appeared as if he was "smiling" - LOL.. When he saw me open the van door, he really started prancing around - like I was going to take him for a ride.. Well - no one else was around and I've never been "introduced" to this very large dog, so I wasn't about to approach him or make any kind of contact with him.. I did what I had to do, came back inside, and called my neighbor at work.. I was concerned because they had just issued a severe thunderstorm warning and it occured to me that with him being a "puppy" (huge or not) it might scare him badly enough that he would run away and never be found - or worse yet, get hit by a car down on the main road.. She couldn't believe he had "escaped" again and said she would call someone from the top of the hill who "knows" the dog to get him back inside again..

Awhile later she calls me and tells me that when her friend came rushing down to find the dog, he was sitting in the house!! Friend looked around outside and saw no breaks in the fence.. She can't figure out how he possibly could have gotten "out" and then back "in" again with no escape route through the fence..

Must be "magic" - LOL - and she is certainly going to have her hands full with this dog!!

How tall is their fence? I have a 6 foot fence and my dane can put his paws on the top of it, so I assume that he could get over it if he really wanted to. He is in inside dog though.

A friend of mine had a 5 foot fence and could not keep her danes in.

ETA People who cannot (or will not) keep their dogs contained drive me CRAZY. My dogs stay in my house and go in the back yard to potty. There are people in my neighborhood who just let their dogs roam whereever they want to. I cant even walk my dogs because their dogs a snippy to mine. Ok Vent over LOL

My friend learned from her neighbors that her dog liked to jump their 6 foot fence, race around the front of the house, and jump back in over the 6 foot fence on the other side

She'll have to find a way to make the fence taller or restrict the dog to a smaller portion of the yard with a taller fence. Among other reasons, a young giant breed puppy can do a LOT of damage to his legs by doing a lot of jumping at a young age.

I was thinking fence jumper too! My female mastiff is capable and has shown us how on a few occasions.

My friend had a dog that could actually climb the chain link fence...I had a greyhound that was tall enough that he could push the latch open on the gate...so anything is possible.
If I were you I would get your neighbor to introduce yourself to the dog and maybe become "friends" . This dog may not be aggressive or even a biter, just a big ole clumsy ox that is very friendly.
I tend not to be to afraid of the bigger dogs unless they are a known breed that can be aggressive. It's the little heel nippers that I am more afraid of, the ones that bark at you like they are going to have you for dinner!

That's the mix! Great dane and mastiff - couldn't remember until you just mentioned it..

I wasn't assuming that he was aggressive or a biter - as I said, he actually looked like he was "smiling" - LOL.. It's just my policy - especially when there is no one around (and I do mean no one) to not interact with a dog that I know nothing about..

I think we're going to "have" to be introduced - because I don't think this dog is going to be staying in his yard..
