I am mostly a lurker here, but I have often thought to myself, "what a wonderful son you are." I know the feeling of being an orphan,I lost my parents 2 months apart when I was 36. I also doubted that I had done the best I could,still do sometimes. Please, know that you will get through this, but you will be changed. I am so sorry, take care of yourself. Allow yourself to feel whatever you need to, it is part of the healing.

I haven't been on the boards too much this past week and just read the news of your mother's passing. I am so sorry to hear this. I know it was not easy at times but it was obvious how much you loved her and how well you took care of her.

She made it clear she wanted to be cremated and no kind of service. It isn't true. but she felt there was no one left in her life that cared aside from me and my niece, and she didn't want me to spend the money to have a service. It's in her will, so I will respect that.

Which is fine with me; but she also had a detailed DNR, which stated that nothing was to be done to prolong her life is she had Alzhiemers. And her and I had many conversations about it, so I knew what she wanted.

The past couple weeks she really went down hill; she wanted to sleep all the time, not get out of bed, ate very little, drank very little.

I went to call an ambulance several times, but I'd promised not to do anything to prolong her life if I knew she had Alzhiemers and I did, so I didn't.

I did the right thing, but it was so hard and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

I wanted to express my condolences to you. I am mostly a lurker, but I wanted to share that I also lost my Mom this year. I was making all medical decisions after her diagnosis and she also had a DNR. The decisions I made also haunt me. I know these were her wishes, but you just never think you'll have to make them. I hope you find peace and comfort and know others care.

Yes, you did the right thing, Willy. Calling an ambulance would have been a direct violation of your mothers wishes, it appears.

You made the correct decision and as said often, the right decision is often the hard decision. Please focus on honoring your mother and her wishes and don't let this haunt you.

I've been away and just looked at the Dis boards and saw this thread. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Unless someone has cared for a loved one with Alzeimers, that person has no idea of what is required. Know that you took care of her as she wished and allowed her to have her dogs, which is a huge gift in my book. As a newbie, I was more of a lurker, but followed your Posts about your Mom. Just know that you are a good and loving son and took care of her to the best of your ability. My deepest condolences.
