My mom's funeral was today. The service was beautiful. Our parish priest did a wonderful job on the eulogy, and they sang some of my mom's favorite hymns. Another priest who used to be the pastor at our church and grew up with my mom (and is distantly related to us) came to the funeral, and participated in the service. I know my mom would have been happy that he came to the service. She was always very fond of him.
We were overwhelmed by the turnout at my mom's wake last night. The room was packed from the time it began at 4:00 until it ended at 8:00. I would guess that over 200 people came to pay their respects to my mom, and it truly was a tribute to just how wonderful a person my mom was.
I was really proud of my nieces and nephews at the wake and the funeral. They really handled it a lot better than we expected. They spent quite a bit of time kneeling at my mom's casket, and went over to it several times. My niece Catie read my mom's favorite prayer to her. The kids brought the gifts up to the altar at offertory during the service, and they showed a great deal of grace, poise, and respect throughout the past two days. Even the priest and the funeral director commented on how well behaved and respectful they were, and that is a direct tribute to my mom. I will always remind those kids how much my mom loved them, and remind them of what a great grandmother they had.
Thank you, everyone, for your love, kind words, prayers, good thoughts, and support. It has truly helped me through these very difficult weeks, and I've found great comfort in your support.
As for me, I'm hanging in there. I'm just taking it a day at a time. I know that I'll have my moments, and some days will be good, and some bad. My birthday is next week, and I know that will be a tough day, but my sisters have already told me that they will make sure we all get together that day (and one of my nieces told her mom what kind of cake I like). I'm going to Montreal next weekend with my sister and my niece, and I think that will be good for all of us.
Before I end this, I would like to share my mom's favorite prayer with all of you. It's the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of our church. It's a prayer that is near and dear to my family, and it's really beautiful.
Make me a channel of Your peace
Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love
Where there is injury, Your Pardon Lord
And where's there's doubt, true faith in You
Make me a channel of Your peace
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there's sadness ever joy
Oh Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood, as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul
Make me a channel of your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
In giving of ourselves that we receive
And in dying that we're born to eternal life
Thanks again, my friends. I'm so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful group of people!
