My MIL is Cold Hearted

Actually if you read my post with the link, you would have seen where I specifically stated that the rescue was based in mid atlantic but they have contacts in the midwest they would be able to put you in touch with.

No one is saying you shouldn't have gotten rid of the dog if your child was ill. The confusion is why you gave it to someone that has a history of killing pets because of convenience. And then after your niece moved in, you could have stepped in knowing she was difficult. And then you must have had indication your niece was manhandling the dog. Why did you wait until it was too late to do something? It was ultimately YOUR dog. You made the original commitment to it

As far as being too busy to go get the dog. I might be crazy but cleaning house isn't all that important to me if If I can save an animal's life. To each his own. What's done is done at this point.

Madi, I completley understand where you are coming from. Flame me if you wish but I understand her feelings. When the dog came to their house her DD was allergic to the dog. She gave it to her FIL

Someone that has a history of putting pets down has a mindset that animals are disposable. I can't imagine being surprised when they decide to dispose of yet another pet. It's very unfortunate but she seems to have remained true to form.

Since the REASON for getting rid of the dog is such an issue I will tell you it is because my daughter has asthma. I didn't share that because I believe that there are people who won't care what the reason, just that we got rid is bad enough. The point of this thread wasn't why I got rid of the dog. If you choose not to believe me that is fine. I'm sure that someone will go through this whole thread and find where I have said something that wouldn't agree with my daughter having asthma

I truly am not intending on flaming you in anyway, I just wonder... did you know she had asthma before adopting the beagle? Did you research beagles, to find out if they were hypoallergenic? Did you let your children spend time with the dog prior to signing the papers and bringing the pup home?

When we decided to bring a dog into our family, I knew that with severe asthma and allergies, I had to find a dog that I was not allergic to and would not cause me health issues. There are many dogs out there that don't cause problems - beagles are just not one of them. I spent time with the dog before bringing it home, JUST to ensure he wouldn't make me wheeze or sneeze.

Or did she develop asthma after you had the dog in your home? Did she visit your in-laws with teh dog there? And it didn't bother her?

I'm sorry your MIL wasn't bending (or even listening!) in the end. I'd have a hard time speaking to her again, if I was in your shoes. That was unnecessary and cruel =( I don't understand some people.

As a true animal lover, I must say that this thread sickens me. I don't wish to comment or pass judgement on the OP. It is not my place to do this.

However, I do want to say that Crankyshank Jenn is an angel to have offered to give a home to this dog. Bless you Jenn.

A dog that bites- regardless of anything is does not belong in a family with children.

Now dont get me wrong- we're animal lovers here- have a dog, cat and hamsters. I grew up with dogs, cats bunnies, horses etc.. HOWEVER I must say that in my house- if a anyone was bitten by the dog- the dog would be put to sleep.

We were very careful about the breed of dog we got, making sure it was a family type dog- for instance, our dog is a yellow lab.

That being said- I can understand where your MIL is coming from. There is NO way that I would ever keep a dog that bit anyone, and further more I dont think I'd give it away- knowing that somewhere down the line- it could end up back with a family with young children, and bite another child.

Just my .02 for what its worth (and since the banks are closed, it aint much!)

ITA! The dog should be put to sleep, and I speak from personal experience in living for years with an aggressive dog. I still have scars on my arms and hands from this dog.

You lived with the OP's dog? What a small world!

All day, at work, I get calls from people looking to give up their pets for umpteen thousand reasons. Most of them are not even willing to TRY to find a home on their own (friends/family). I don't blame the OP. She found a home (probably the only one offered), thought things would work. It's a shame that the MIL is so ridiculously unreasonable. That poor dog.
