I usually write a trip report but I thought for this special trip I would just write a Marathon Story. I hope you all don't mind if I post it here.

2:45a.m. the phone rings - I answer it and hang it up immediately - didn't even bother to listen to who it might be calling. My DH turns to me and says I cannot believe we are getting up this early to walk! I sweetly say, "Suck it up. Love ya - mean it!" I get up out of bed to brush my teeth and sweep my hair back into a pony tail under my bright pink princess hat. The attire today will be sports bra, running shirt, running pants, socks, and running shoes. I have my throw away sweatshirt on as well as a fashionable fanny pack filled with Tylenol 8 hour, stop watch, snacks, and cell phone. We walk outside and quickly realize that there will be no need for sweatshirts - it is already warm enough without them.

3:15a.m. we meet up with Doe (DoeWDW) and head to Port Royale where we meet up with AuntMeme (MaryEllen). We get on the bus waiting for us and head to Epcot. We are all pretty excited but still cannot believe we are up at this hour. Brian and I chatted with a girl who was doing her 3rd marathon and she was giving us tips and pointers. We get to Epcot and head to the gate we stood sort of in the front near the port-a-potties so that we can see other Wishers walk in. We saw (and please forgive me if I forget anyone) Oh Mom, Alreadyexcitedgranny, and 3 other girls who names escape (Ya know it was only 3:45 in the morning and I haven't had any coffee yet ;) ). We were standing there thinking this is great no one is in line for the port-a-potties and that is when we realize - whoops we are looking at the back of them! So the 4 of us walk around to the other side so that we will be able to actually use the potties when needed  .

My neighbors Eric and Susan met up with us and we all decided to go and warm up a bit. We had a great time talking and getting to know one another. And that is when a group from the St. Charles, MO Runners club joined us (Eric is a member). As this one man (Found out later his name is Glenn) turns around we realize he has a monkey in his back pocket. To be more specific it is a Curious George. I proceed to say, rather loudly, "Why does that man have a Curious George in his pants?" Needless to say Doe thought that was hysterical, once she stopped laughing we were able to ask - "why the monkey?" Evidently this guy is a real jokester and said that George is always curious to see if he will finish it. By the way Glen was running the 26.2 miles! :earseek: After Glenn and George left us Doe turns to me and says, "Excuse me while I strip." And right in front of my husband! I tell you this woman has no shame. puckerup: Just teasing! She was just shedding her first layer of clothing but we all still found it pretty funny. Remember it is now 4a.m. and no coffee.

FINALLY we head to the start line. We had a great time watching all the men run into the not so wooded area to do their "business." Thanks Guys - Love ya - mean it! After we walk .6 of a mile to the corrals we realize we are all in different ones. Doe, DH, and I were in L and the rest were in N. After we checked we all decided to start in N so that we could stay together. So it is now 4:30 and the race does not even start till 6a.m. - so we pull up some asphault and have a seat. We are still trying to remained stretched out so that we don't tighten up in the first mile.

Yeah it is 6a.m. - and we start although we don't move. I proceed to start mooing like a cow. I'm serious - I have never felt more like a heard of cows in my life! Finally we move and by move I mean take a one step about every 30 seconds. How is that for being on pace! We cross the start line at 6:10a.m. It is really really crowded and we are pratically running over people to get up to a good pace. And I would estimate that we really didn't hit a good stride until we were done with the first mile. The first mile went really fast because there were lots of spectators yelling and were really excited.

To be continued....

You're doing great so far, Amanda! I'll just say "ditto!". I will admit to feeling quite giddy and silly and making crazy comments, but none struck me as funny as Amanda's quip about the guy with the Curious George in his pants! :teeth: I really wish the Tag Fairy would take note of that one. ;)

We last left our marathoners at mile 1 marker....

The 2nd mile was actually back stage behind Epcot. We went behind Living Seas, the land, Imagination, and Soarin. It was rather dull to be honest but then they let us into the World Showcase. There is NOTHING like seeing the World Showcase at dawn. They had all the pavillions lit up and sparkling. The Globe from Illuminations was out in the middle of the lagoon and it had running icons all over it. It was just awesome and REALLY got you pumped up. This was the best mile! Aunt Meme (mary ellen) made a bathroom break in Moroacco I think. We walked through England, france, Moracco, Japan, America, German, Italy, and exited right before China which was the end of the 3rd mile.

The 4th mile ran parrallel to the first mile which was along a very long stretch of Highway. There was a band somewhere in there and a DJ. We were all finally able to spread out a bit and really walk. Which by the way Mary Ellen caught back up with us during this mile after her bathroom break! The woman is a machine. We usually walked with Susan, Doe, and MaryEllen in front and Brian and I in the back usually a couple paces behind them. They were walking fools and I will admit that I found it very hard to keep up with them. Somewhere along the way it was decided that we would run all the down hills. This really helped us make up time for weaving in and out of slower walkers.

We breeze right by the 5th markway and head on to 6. The 6th mile was a lot of fun because it was on an overpass and all the marathoners ahead of you were below you on the highway. We had a brief screaming section where we cheered each other on. And then you proceeded down the exit ramp and now you are under the overpass and we screamed again. Mile 7 seemed to come quick enough.

Mile 7 - here is where I tell you about our chant for "Mile 9!" And if anyone knows a tag fairy I would really like "To Mile 9!" in my tag line. Thanks! Susan had heard a rumor that there would be snacks at Mile 9 and it was sponsored by Nestle. As in the chocolate company. Well of course we were all motivated by that so the entire race we would yell, "To mile 9!" because - ya know - SNACKS!

Mile 8 is still along the same stretch of Hwy but the nice thing is that you can see the great by "MAGIC KINGDOM" sign in the distance. A DJ somewhere tells us how we are going to see the Magic Kingdom in a way not many people have. I of course have to comment that I have seen the magic kingdom behind a sea of people before - they all just didn't walk this fast. :)

We hit Mile 9 and as Susan yelled, "WHERE ARE THE SNACKS!!!" We didn't actually hit the snacks until about halfway between mile 9 and mile 10 markers. They were bannanas - yummy and chips ahoy cookie covered in chocolate - yummy. I scarfed down my food and drank my power aid.

Now here is where the course changes a bit from the map. The group immediately in front of us got to walk up main street, around the castle on the tomorrowland side - back through and out by splash mountain. WE however were directed to be backstage behind main street. Came in through a gate in tomorrow land, back through the castle and out by splash. This upset me a bit because I really wanted to walk up main street and we had just barely missed it. Plus I will admitt I was finally starting to feel it. Doe told me she tearded up a bit walking through the castle thinking of some special wish buds that couldn't be with us. We love you!

Outside splash we hit mile 11 and I watched Susan, Doe, and Maryellen's heads get further and further away from me. I totally checked out at this point and to be honest don't remember much from the Magic Kingdom either - just being mad about the main street thing. I could not keep up with my group any longer and I felt very desperate that I would not finish. :charac2: DH stayed with me of course and he knew that I was feeling it. Now here is the bad part mile 11 was the most boring stretch of highway, very narrow, at a steady incline, with you facing east so the sun is blaring down right at you. There are no spectators, no music, no anything - it is very easy to let your thoughts consume you. This is when I saw Ohmom again who commented on the same thing. When we hit mile 12 I could no longer see my three friends and I knew that they were to far ahead to catch up any longer. I was walking next to an older woman who I heard say, "I can't finish." Well this snapped me out of my funk. I started talking to her about how we have to finish. That we have made it to mile 12 and that we had not come all this way to just quit when we were right there. She kept going. That was When DH asked me if I wanted to run....

To be continued....

Ok.Ok. Type fast. I was ok until you started telling us about when you had to talk to the lady, I started crying.............I'm so proud of you........drats...I can't see to type...............

hurry, hurry.............

We last left our marathoners at mile 12...

So dh and I take off at a very slow jog but I can only keep it up for maybe 2 minutes. I am just so wiped. So I stop and we walk a bit further. Dh says again, "Do you want to run." I say, "no." 5 minutes later "Do you want to run?" Now I know my DH is looking at the clock and thinking - we need to make up some time from my 11 mile slump but there is just no way I can get up the power to jog right now so I growl, "I CANNOT RUN!" He is smart man - that was the last time he asked. We are now behind the Grand Floridian where there are bunch of cast members with top hats and veils cheering us on. I vaguely remember thinking, "Tophats?" of course I also didn't realize where we were. See I told you I had mentally checked out. Finally a guy on the side of the road says - you just have to go around the corner. Now if I was a cheating woman - I would have married that man on the spot, but since my husband was there - I behaved.

We see the mile 13 marker - okay I'm feeling better and I start to jog. We jogged that last tenth of a mile to the finish line. As DH and I cross they announce, "The Mechler Family!" and I burts into tears and then just as I am about to recover I see Doe standing there waiting for me and I start to cry again. She waited for me so that we could get our medals together. So we walk over and they put the medals over our heads and we hug again and I am really starting to cry now but I pull it back together. We take some pictures and talk about how I fell behind. Doe tried to wait for me but she said she couldn't even see me in the crowd. We take some pictures, and grab more water and decide it is time to go. We did not do the professional pics or get anything to eat. We all had the swimming pools on our minds.

I checked the official time on the website when we got back and it said 3 hours and 16 minutes - only about 4 minutes behind Doe's time.

Looking back I am so very glad I did this and that I had a great group of people to do it with. Susan, Doe, Mary Ellen, and my hubby Brian were such an inspiration and made the race so much fun.

Sorry - can't seem to get the photo's to work...give me a few days.

Oh, Amanda..............great story! How inspiring!! And I was crying there with ya, man.

I can't get the pictures to work. Is it my computer or something??

Thanks again for posting. I'm bursting my buttons for the WISH walkers. :grouphug:

Way to go Amanda!!! :cheer2: I love reading about your 1/2 marathon experience! I'm very proud of you, Amanda!

that was good.........how do you remember all that? lol
As I posted on another thread, I can;t remeber anything excpet me talking to me saying "YOU MUST FINISH" lol.
beside my body wondering what i was doing to it, my mind was mentally torn apart, I began to tear up in the later miles...still not sure why I just rationalize to myself thinking it was that I missed my family or that I was so happy. Weird things happend to me mentally..........
I also think that perhaps I was not doing this step by step with someone, I really didnt talk to anyone. Next year hubby and perhaps a few friends will be doing it with me may be that part will be different either way, I wouldnt have change anything!

great story!

Thanks for sharing your story Amanda. I'm so proud of all you guys for actually doing it! Maybe someday I can join you all!

Thanks for posting your report, it helps me now remember things that I couldn't remember. Some of the morning is still such a blurr. I hope that once I get my pictures developed that will help too.

I am so proud of everyone that started the marathon. It is such a great accomplishment to make it to the start. It takes a lot of guts to even sign up for the event and get to the start line.

Thanks again for sharing your story.

how do you remember all that? lol

In high school I wanted to be a writer so I was always taking common day things and putting them to stories. It just sort of became a habit. So now when I am experiencing something I am usually writing the story in my head as I go along. My DH did have to help a lot with this one since like I said I was mentally gone for about 30 minutes.

Congratulations Amanda. :cheer2: I am thinking of doing the half next year. DH is not interested but says he will cheer me on.

That was a great report, thank you for sharing it with us!

What a great story. I have been thinking of doing the 1/2 for a bit now. You say walking, I assume you have to do some sort of power walking but you can walk as long as you keep that 16 min mile pace? How fast do you have to walk?

Wow Amanda You did it!!!!!!

Thanks for the detailed description, I almost feel like I was there :cheer2: The starting crowd must have been quite frustrating. But I'm glad you were able to make up the time and hit a good pace. What an amazing accomplishment!!!!

Hi Amanda!

I just printed off your marathon report to read over lunch. I'm sure I'll enjoy reading all the details. I am seriously considering doing the 1/2 marathon next year and DH just gave me the green light to start planning last night so I'll read your account with much interest. Thanks for sharing!!

A 15 minute mile requires you to walk four miles per hour, soooo hmmmm (I guess I could use a calculator) a 16 minute mile would require you to walk 3.75 miles per hour. It's a pretty brisk pace.
