So Saturday morning, I want to mow the lawn real quick before getting on with our busy day. So I drag out the old lawn mower and pull cord.... nothing. Pull cord.... nothing. Repeat times ten. This is not new. The lawnmower hates me but loves my DH. DH comes outside, pulls cord twice, lawnmower roars into action. (That is our usual routine with starting the lawnmower.)
Off I go, one pass, two pass. Okay, gotta mow around the rocks where the laundry discharge water goes (Shhhh, don't tell anyone about that. It is not allowed on Long Island). BIG CLUNK!!!! uh oh. I hit one of the rocks and the lawnmower shudders and dies. Silence. DH comes to screen door. "It's okay honey, I'm alright, just hit a rock". (I don't tell him it was a BIG rock!) He shakes his head and goes back inside (he is cleaning the kitchen, BTW). Anyway, pull cord...nothing; pull cord.... nothing. Repeat five times. DH comes outside. Pulls cord twice, and it roars into action again. Told you, it loves DH, hates me!
Umm, this does not sound right. Roar is rising and falling... rising and falling. Hubby comes close to me and says that that does not sound right. "It's okay", I say, "It does that all the time, Don't worry about it". He shakes his head again and heads back to the kitchen.
Off I go again, one pass, coming back on second pass and then I start to hear Clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk. Very rhythmic. Uh, oh - I think to myself. THIS is not good. Engine kinda sputters and then dies. Hubby comes back out. Looks underneath. Blade seems to be not hitting anything. Nothing stuck under there. He tries to restart... pulls cord.... nothing. Pulls cord... nothing times five times. HA! It doesn't like him anymore. Hubby looks like he is going to start getting into this. "WAIT." I say. "We don't have time for this today. We have a communion to go to and other stuff, remember?" This will have to wait until tomorrow.
Sunday - another very busy day. (Is there any weekend day that isn't??) Around 4 p.m. lawnmower gets DH's attention and it still won't start. He buys and then installs new blade, new filter, new spark plug and who knows what else. Guess what!!! Lawnmower hates him now. It won't start. Ha! This is after pulling cord infinity times! I think....it will start for me now since it won't start for him. (HA! Fat chance!) Pull cord.... nothing, numerous times. Hubby decides engine is flooded. It was turned on its side for quite a while. We will have to let it sit.
So sit, it does. We have dinner. We clean up after dinner. I go on the computer for a bit. Round about 6:45 p.m., we get back to lawnmower. I want to get that lawn mowed!! It needs it!!! Still won't start after many, many attempts. "Let's go to Sears and buy a new lawnmower" I hear myself say (WHAT? Did I say that?! Last thing I want to do is spend money for a stupid lawnmower!) DH informs me Sears is closed, but Home Depot is open. "Let's go to Home Depot and buy a new lawnmower and it can be my birthday gift!" (WHAT!!!! DID I SAY THAT??!?!! WHY would I say THAT!?!) ahh, yup, I said it all right!
Long story short, (little late for that now, don't ya think!)....by 8:10 we were back at home with a new Toro 6.5 HP 22" Forward High Wheel Mower with a "guarantee to start" engine. Hubby got it out of the box. Opened the handles up. Put in oil and gas and I adjusted the wheel heights. (Hey, I gotta do something. It is my gift).
Today, couldn't wait for work to end. Ran home and started up that lawnmower. Pull cord....nothing. Pull cord.... LIFE!!!!! And boy did that baby fly!!!! I finished the lawn, front and back, in no time flat.
I can't believe I volunteered for a lawnmower to be my early birthday gift but, ya know what, I LOVE IT.
